You might be discussing his ability to play the pass and nail it. Anyway, you know, I'm not to shabby at long-bangers but I wouldn't say they were of much use if some random hanging around with tight shorts decides to nip in, nab the ball and do a runner towards the bushes hoping we'll follow.
You don't think that the best teams in the world, with the most time on the ball (and in all likelihood the best possession stats) probably have keepers that end up with high passing success rates(whether it be with foot and/or hand). I bet Valdes is near 90%. Possession & dominance gives you time to think/time to play ... it may be pretty obvious but some need reminding once in a while. More time, more accuracy.
Ability is one thing, what you do with it is another.

It varied hugely. For example, in the last game against Blackpool last season, it was 83.3%. In his last game before that, Chelsea at home, it was 24.3%. It's hard to put an exact figure on it without doing a pile of work, from memory I would say it averaged about 55-60%.
Well if you want to talk about ability and what he does with it - his quick release after grabbing a cross against Spurs to Young lead the the Anderson goal. De Gea has been reading his options very well and if anyone dismisses how good his distribution has been out of hand, seems like they have an obvious agenda against him.

In other words, his team mates are giving him options. And I suspect that these available options are related to the present form that United are displaying. They've been generally dominant, and on the front foot which usually means that there is more space for defenders & keeper.
Of course, most keepers in the EPL don't always have options, nevermind a best option so to compare like with like is a bit tenuous.
What is important here is what comes of the distribution. I've seen countless 40 yard cross-field passes from Scholes & Rooney over the years where everybody ooohs & ahhhs but frankly they've led to nothing other than showing they can hit a, well we all know the term, a Hollywood pass.

SO what you ARE saying is that his ability to pick out these longer passes are of no real value, because A.) they are really only indicative of de Gea being gifted an extremely unusual amount of time to dilly-dally around on the ball due to his team as a whole being superior and playing ahead, and that B.) They offer no real use to United in attack, as they are the types of passes of the "Hollywood" variety, I.E. superfluous, or spectacular, but only for spectacles sake?

It's only surreal to folks who aren't prepared to follow the entire discussion, a bit like our friend Sharky7 did when I was discussing Gordon (which unfortunately has hit major injury problems ... a true talent that when fit was one of the best keepers in the EPL).
Then on the other hand, I tend to write in a way where I generally give everyone the benefit of the doubt that they have the ability to look beyond (the possible meanings) the actual words before them on the screeen. In other words I respect the knowledge of those out there until they prove otherwise.

Admittedly, I haven't followed this thread enough to tell you everything that's been said, but from the amount I have paid attention, I don't recall anyone saying or even insinuating that de Gea is near as good as van der Sar at this time.
But the thing is I haven'y just been going on about his distribution ... this is the way that folks took it on this forum because it's their best form of defence ... lets make this about his distribution, his best trait, and not his shot-stopping or abilities to deal with crosses, where he's obviously been weak to date.

Nope. But obviously because we haven't all been saying that he's been bad in every game for us, and people have actually said he had a good game, it clearly means everyone thinks he's better than VDS.

I really don't want to go and read the last three pages of this thread. Would a kind soul please enlighten me as to what Pondlife has been saying about De Gea? I know you are arguing about distribution and stuff but what else?
Pondlife has taken great offense at the common observation that DDG has very good distribution. He has argued against this extensively without really making any sense and seems to think that it's not down to anything DDG is doing, rather his team mates making themselves available better.
He's now moved on to claiming people have said DDG is as good as VDS when in fact nobody has said anything like that.
'No real value' - eh ? If they're of value then they're of value, but only if possession is maintained or there is a net gain. A 40 yard Hollywood ball to Smalling who takes it neatly on his chest and plays it back to Jones following up is pointless if it was easier to play it to Jones in the first place. In this former instance you're only really improving your chances of losing possession.
Of course if, as a keeper you can do this under pressure time and again then you really are talented.
