Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

I'm not convinced that Fergie knows what a midfielder is anymore.

keano and carrick are those it for his great gigs in the sky? anyone in between that did the business? veron , kleberson , djemba , anderson?

I just don't get Modric. He's obviously a good player buts it's as if Levy has come out with a ridiculous fee to put off potential suitors and then he's all of a sudden he's "worth £40 million".

Decent, not great IMO.

Seems he is almost definitely being sold. Real Madrid surely.

But Villas-Boas says that the midfielder, 26, who joined Spurs from Dinamo Zabreb in 2008 for a reported £16m, is the subject of renewed interest from other clubs and negotiations are ongoing.
He said: "The interest that we have from various different clubs shows the importance of the player and what he's done for Tottenham.
"It's fair to say that the club respects Luka's ambitions and his willingness to move on and he respects the fact that he's an important player for the club and can help us move forward.
"Ongoing discussions will continue with these clubs until we reach an agreement which is acceptable for each party."

"various" different clubs?

ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod it's ON!

If Moutinho signs for Spurs for 25m or under it'll re-affirm my new belief that Fergie in his older age has forgotten what a midfielder is.

(well, assuming we don't get Martinez or something)

I'd still be content if we sign any decent CM (e.g. Dembele) even if Real get Modric and Spurs get Moutinho. I'd be baffled if we get no one though.

Psg being ready to pay 50 bazillion means nothing if he doesn't want to move there. I think he's Madrid bound too

I think that the fact Mourinho is in for him (supposedly at least) despite having an outrageously good squad and strong CM options reflects how good Modric truly is.

Knowing that Fergie rates him so highly, it is a shame that once again we are not able or in a position to get our man.

A shame maybe, (well, definitely yes actually) but there is basically one other club that can expect to beat Madrid to a target and that's Barcelona. A few others can spend their owner's cash but even then the target in general would likely prefer Real Madrid.

We know we can't compete with them or Barca (yes I know about Valencia back in 2009) - that's the reason many gave-up on Modric when it became clear they really were interested. We all surely knew this. It's just waiting for the deal to go through before this thread moves to the Football Forum with Ozil, Benzema and the others.

true. i accept our station below the spanish giants.

I hope this time though, if sahin or khedira ask to leave madrid that we go in for them since they will have gotten the spanish 'bug' out of their system

"Real Madrid's £40m offer for Luka Modric paves way for Joao Moutinho's move to Tottenham Hotspur

Real Madrid have bid more than £40 million to sign Luka Modric from Tottenham Hotspur, paving the way for the midfielder to finally leave.

Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea are also attempting to sign the 26-year-old Croatia international but it is understood that a deal could be struck with Real in the next few days.

Real had cooled their interest, after an inquiry earlier this summer, in which they had offered cash plus Turkey midfielder Nuri Sahin but talks are understood to have resumed over a straight cash offer. ...."

Madrid can go feck themselves. They don't need him, let us have him :(

Hopefully just a sad attempt by Levy to drive the price up and make us splunk out

I'd me amazed if it's £40m.

As would I - can't seeing Real Madrid needing to bid anything like that for a player willing to walk to Madrid if he had to. I can't see them needing to pay more than £30m tops, but we shall see when the deal goes through.

40£ million is a lot of money, especially since we don't really need him. We have Alonso and Khedira with Lass as a good backup, why pay 40m ffs?

I'd rather we went for Maicon or Silva.

No way are Madrid going to spend that much. PSG might though.

Either way, anything above £25m is going to price us out. So think we should move on, nothing to see here.

I'd say Modric is better but the point is that one is an attacking CM the other defensive.

Modric is far from being an out and out attacking midfielder. He's a deep lying playmaker who isn't good enough to effortlessly dictate games, so likes to advance forward as well.

You can argue away about how good he is but he isn't a DM like Alonso, Khedira or Diarra.

Khedira and Diarra are most certainly DM's, but I wouldn't say that Alonso is one. He's more of a deep lying playmaker who generally controls games in my opinion.
