Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

I think they have no choice but to sell him this offseason. His conduct is getting worse and it is not good for the rest of the team. They will easily get around £30m for him. If I was Levy, I would just take the money and rebuild my defense.

Can't condone his rumoured conduct, that's well out of order. That said he probably feels trapped by the way Levy seems to operate, but again I have no sympathy for Modric there as it was he who chose to sign such a long contract (6 years originally I think?).

He's only got himself to blame for tying himself to Spurs for so long if he had any intention of moving on in that time.

It's definitely the best thing for them to do. Squeeze as much money as possible out of Real Madrid, buy Moutinho who could be a good replacement and use the leftover money as well as other transfer money the club has to improve the defence.

I think they'd be better to sell sooner, even if it's for less and then allow AVB to spend the money properly and be ready for the season.

It's classic Spurs to see the player go at the last moment, leaving them no time to get in a replacement, they should be looking to have all their business done in the next 2/3 weeks. Not having a long-running saga over a key player that will ultimately leave anyway

Similar for Arsenal I guess, but with Podolksi and Giroud, I suspect they already knew RVP was going to do this

Modric was happy enough to sign a long term contract on increased wages after two so-so seasons at Spurs. One very good season (followed by an OK one) and he wants out. Van Persie was happy enough to sign a contract with Arsenal after repeatedly starting about half the games in the league programme. A full season and he wants out.

Career progression needs to be quick for a footballer as they're only playing for a little over a decade.

Modric had a gentleman's agreement with the club that he would be allowed to speak with a bigger club if they came in for him, Tottenham refused to do this when it happened and threatened to put him in the stands if he didn't accept it. They've treated him like shit and really left him with no option.

Well they should take the risk and not sign the long contracts then. But they don't - they want it both ways: long contract for mediocre/non-performance and 'career progression' (a shitty euphemism for more money) as soon as they show a bit of form.

To be fair, those are the two things most people are after: job security and more money/progression down the line.

Obviously it doesn't apply to footballers they have to be "extra loyal".

Is it common for footballers' contracts to include loyalty bonuses? That would seem the obvious means of counteracting players wanting to leave prematurely.

I'm not defending the obscene wages that top footballers command, but I'm sure the motivation behind it is much the same as the rest of us.

No, those kind of salaries make it a completely different game of soldiers. A player like van Persie has already got financial security for life, he doesn't need to worry about paying the mortage etc.
No there lifestyle is much more expensive. Everyone wants more money, its not for no reason that people call most of the footballers greedy, after all they are like us. Plus its not like he was winning anything at arsenal anyway. So career wise its a wise move as well.

Most people aren't that greedy, even some footballers.

I think most people are that greedy. Or at least most people don't like to see people of similar/less talent being paid more to do the same job.

Many people leave their job to find a better job(money wise). I wouldn't think twice if one more ambitious company wants to sign me, all the while paying me more.

He is being fined £80,000 for missing training sessions. He really is going to do everything in his power this summer to force a move out of London.

That's you though. You're not already earning more a week than the majority of well paid people in the country do a year. Either way, it's sheer greed and most footballers are that way.

Where do these "majority of footballers" come from?

No value here for us but Real will find value in this.

I think we should be willing to stump the £35m for him personally.

Yeah, this is exactly right. His behavior is rather Tevezish.

Makes me not want him playing for United.

cnutish from Modric not going to Preseason with Spurs.

Also Real would've been willing to pay £35m for him, then he would've already been a Madrid player.

Hard to condone his behavior here but there are two sides to every story. As a previous poster said, he had a gentleman's agreement with Spurs which they have seemingly broken.

Footballers get short careers and sometimes only one opportunity to secure the move of their dreams. If they don't make it happen for themselves, then no one else is going to. Ultimately people will look out for themselves. In the case of Modric and Van Persie, they both clearly want the chance to join a big club and win some trophies before they get too old.

Hard to judge without knowing the details. He could have been promised last summer that he could leave Spurs if they failed to reach the C.L

Not saying that is the case - but it's possible!

Possibly.

But Levy has been playing with him like a piece of commodity for some years now. Its been common knowledge Modric has wanted out for a few years now and has been prevented by Levy personally by either pricing him out of a move or talking him into an extension.

Levy seems to be playing with him again.
