Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

If he wanted out a few years ago, then why he did sign a contract extension recently, I think it was last summer or the one before that?

Levy talked him into it one way or another. Levy is a master negotiator, Modric is probably not. The only way he can fight him is by a disappearing act. Levy will probably have no choice now but to sell him. There's no working together after this.

Possibly.

But Levy has been playing with him like a piece of commodity for some years now. Its been common knowledge Modric has wanted out for a few years now and has been prevented by Levy personally by either pricing him out of a move or talking him into an extension.

Levy seems to be playing with him again.

He signed a contract. If he wants out, hand in a transfer request and talk the the media about why you want to go.

You don't ever not show up for the team.

Signing a contract extension is a two way street though because unless he did it, he could have left for free and Spurs would have gotten nothing. By signing such a long contract, he ensures the club get a bumper fee for his services. Levy should honour his gentleman's agreement.

That said, Modric should show up for training.

His own stupidity has held him back. You don't sign a 6-year deal when you're a 25-year old at a club like Spurs. Unless, of course, Levy has promised to let him go and then backed down on his promise, which is perfectly plausible here.

I seem to remember such a promise being brought up last summer when Modric wanted to join Chelsea.

And earns 40k a week when Joe fecking Cole who signed a contract during the same summer earns 130k  Wish all our young players had an agent like that.

It sounds like Modric thought he had a verbal agreement allowing him to leave if they weren't playing in the CL. As we know, those aren't worth the paper they're written on.

I can see both sides of this one. Spurs can't afford to be bullied by players or other clubs, but Modric wanted to leave last year and he must be in a grim mood to act like this. Fortunately there are teams interested and Modric's not on such outrageous wages that anyone would be scared of bidding (unlike the case with Tevez) so there should be scope for a fast deal. Provided Spurs are willing to play it pragmatically of course.

Popcorn anyone?

He should have ensured that he had a clause inserted into his deal then, like a £20m release clause in case they don't make the CL.

At £40k a week they might well keep him for another season, if he doesn't perform they're still going to get more than £25m for him next year on the basis of his reputation.

Agreed.

Also true.

Modric is just stupid to believe the agreement he had with Levy. The later would have said anything to get the former to sign a contract.

It's almost as if he's signed some sort of 'contract', agreeing to work for a specified period in return for wages

Modric isn't really the stupid one; it's his agent that would appear to have dropped a massive bollock by not ensuring the relevant clauses were included.

Agents exist to ensure that they know the ins and outs of a player's contract, so the players don't have to.

Yes.

It's unreal how Levy expects to be able to refuse to sell unless his terms are met. It's almost like he's in charge or something.

It's outrageous that RM can't just pay whatever they want. They are the biggest club in the world after all's said and done: Levy should be honoured that they wish to deal with Spurs at all.

And as for Modric ... poor little blighter. Why should someone so talented have to put up with all this hassle?

If there was a gentleman's agreement it might have been worth making sure that it was being offered by a gentleman. Modric's agent needs shooting.

Levy should have taken 40 mill when it was on offer. Nobody will pay anywhere near that now.

Certainly naive. It's likely that there was a verbal agreement, otherwise signing a 6 year contract in your mid-twenties for FAR less than your talents would get you elsewhere would be stupidity. He probably thought he was doing Spurs a favour not getting a release clause in his contract so they could get maximum value on his sale and Daniel Levy is fecking him over the negotiating table.

Well, then he's a very, very stupid man. This is what happens to stupid men in business.

If I where Modric I should change agent. Zlatans and Pogba's agent seems to know how to handle these situations and a fight between Levy and Mino Raiola would be interesting.

You're talking as if Madrid tried to deliberately lower the price because they knew how badly Modric wants the transfer. They didn't, they've probably made a fair offer of over £30m which has been refused. I won't be surprised if they are annoyed with the way Levy operates and you're left with an unhappy and frustrated player.

And when you promise your player to let him go when you don't make the CL, you do exactly that when the time comes.

Transfer requests can easily be rejected. What does he do then? Go public? Slag of Spurs? Make even more problems for himself, alienate himself with the fans?

He shouldn't have signed an extension and we don't know the circumstances that forced him to do so even though he wanted out. Modric probably made his situation clear to Levy at the end of the season but the latter disagreed. Who knows, except that you don't do a disappearing act unless something major happened to cause it.

Except that in football contracts seem to have little value. Modric is not the first player to change his mind. And there are plenty of clubs that break contracts with players they've signed.

Wasn't he claiming last season that he signed the new contract after promises from Levy about when and how he could leave, and Levy has since reigned on those promises?

Could be lieing, after all why not put a release clause in your contract, but then again it sounds like something Levy would do.

I think it was a gentleman’s agreement last year. He signed a contract the year before I think.

RM have known from the start what the price is - so they could at any stage either pay it, or walk way. The problem is they've done neither.

Instead, and like others before them, they've imagined that they can bounce Levy into accepting much less. And they imagine they can do this by (a) encouraging the player to make trouble and (b) waiting. More fool them.

As for letting Modric go because we haven't made the CL, that's fine ... as long as the pre-agreed price is met. Otherwise you're left saying that he should be able to leave regardless of the money offered.
