League Cup 3rd Round
Wednesday 26th September
Old Trafford
Kick Off - 19:45 BST

Has Newcastle's crest always had the weird horse-mermaids?

----------De Gea
Rafael--Vidic--Evans--Buttner
------Fletch---Anderson
Nani-------Clev--------Welbeck
---------Hernandez

De Gea
M. Keane--Wootton--Evans--Buttner
Fletcher--Anderson--powell--Cleverley
Hernandez--Macheda

subs: Lindegaard, Blackett, Tunnicliffe, Welbeck, King, brady, Henriquez

Very hard to judge the lineup, but as so often happens, we will mostly see experienced players get game time rather than get a good look at exciting youth players.

Impressive OP there, Scrumpet, top notch.

Not even sure DDG will play this one, wouldn't be totally surprised to see Johnstone, but, at the same time, he'll want to give him games while Lindegaard has this run in goal.

DDG
Rafael
Evans
Reserve (Wootton?)
Buttner
Welbeck
Cleverley
Fletcher
Powell
Nani
Hernandez

Some sort of 4-3-3, but it's guesswork picking this team. We only know Fletcher's in. But I certainly wouldn't lose sleep if we lost this one.

Any idea what kind of side newcastle are going to put out?

-------------De Gea------------
Vermijl---Evans---Wooton---Buttner
-------------Fletcher-------------
-------Powell------Anderson------
Cleverley----Hernandez----Welbeck

No point risking Rio or Vidic and I think Rafael should be rested. Hopefully Rooney's on the bench, if not starting.

DDG

Rafael
Vidic
Evans
Buttner

Valencia
Fletcher
Cleverley
Nani

Welbeck
Hernandez

Subs: Lindegaard, Ferdinand, Anderson, Powell, Petrucci, Henriquez, RvP.

I'd expect Michael Keane and Wootton to start. No point risking our first choice defenders.

De Gea
M. Keane---Wootton---Evans---Buttner
Nani---Fletcher---Cleverley---Brady
Powell
Henriquez

Bench: Johnstone, Vidic, Carrick, Anderson, Lingard, Welbeck, Petrucci

I think Sir Alex has spoken about Fletcher, Powell, Henrique and Buttner starting, and I'd expect Cleverley and De Gea to be recalled.

Brady I think after his international goal is due some sight of the first team, so I'd start him on the left. Nani was pretty poor against Liverpool, so I'd play him straight away in this one to help him find his form - he'd be given a role as a leader out there with the young players looking to him, so maybe he'd respond to that.

The question is the defence - Rio played on a limp for a long-time against Liverpool so he should be nowhere near, Rafael seemed fine in the post-match interview but also take no chances there; leaving Vidic and Evans, so the former goes on the bench (and hopefully remains there if his knee is playing-up) with Evans starting. Please no Carrick in central-defence, I'd prefer just putting out an all reserves back four than play him out of position.

If Rooney is fit enough to be involved then I'd have him on the bench with the last 35 minutes in mind, but that means one fewer young players sadly - I badly want Petrucci to get a chance, as well as Lingard. For a club as proud of youth development as we are, I'd like to see more of the current generation involved with the first-team.

I want us to rest Ferdinand and Vidic for sure, along with Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Valencia, Kagawa and van Persie. I hate Welbeck on the wing, but Young is injured so he's the only option. But in this formation, we can easily go 442 and have Cleverley on the left. I think Rooney could be the surprise on the bench, but end up playing 20-30 minutes on the left wing just to gain some match fitness, regardless of the way the match turns out. Hopefully Anderson makes the bench and replaces Fletcher after an hour or so.

I think Fergie will play Vidic. Newcastle I would expect to go pretty strong, but with their involvement in the Europa League, they might be tempted to rest a few as well.

de Gea
Rafael Vidic Evans Buttner
Fletcher Cleverley
Nani Powell Welbeck
Hernandez

Lindegaard; Wootton, Evra; Anderson, Carrick; Macheda, Rooney

De Gea

???-------Evans--------Wooton------Buttner

Fletcher--------Anderson

Cleverley--------Powell----------Welbeck

Hernandez

This type of fixture excites me  Hopefully a good mix of youth and experience.

I can't even hazard a guess for a line up  Who could play at right back except Rafael? Valencia's probably the most obvious choice.

Start Fletcher there.

Aye, could be a good alternative seeing as we've a million midfield players that could do with minutes on the pitch.

de Gea

Fletcher
Evans
Wootton
Buttner

Cleverley
Powell
Anderson

Welbeck
Chicharito
Brady

I'd love to see Michael Keane, Scott Wootton and perhaps Josh King get a start in this one. Too bad that Cleverley, Anderson and Powell need games because it would be nice to give Petrucci or Tunnicliffe a start.

De Gea

Keane
Wootton
Evans
Büttner

Welbeck
Cleverley
Anderson
King

Powell

Hernandez

But in reality it'll be:

De Gea

Rafael
Keane
Evans
Büttner

Nani
Cleverley
Anderson
Welbeck

Powell

Hernandez

I know it's the capital one cup and all, but expect SAF to field more of a mix of youth and experience compared to some of the suggested line ups. Can't see Fergie wanting us to get turned over by a decent enough Newcastle side in the 3rd round.

Macheda is still here I think or did he go on loan? Thinking about it I expect he'll be involved (probably on the wing given how these things sometimes go) - too many young players I'd like to see, but I think I agree with Heardy that it'll probably be stronger than we are suggesting.

I want to see Brady given a chance. With Nani being in average form, we should perhaps see how Brady does at left wing.

Interesting to see what midfield we'd go for. Cleverley, Anderson and Fletcher needs games. So does Nick Powell.

Hernandez and Welbeck will start.

I always look forward to these games at the start of the season.

Hope we have a good run in the comp this season. The young lads and some of the not-quite-so-young lads too are good enough to do so.

Hard to predict the starting XI but, just for kicks:

De Gea

M. Keane - Evans - Vidic - Buttner

Fletcher - Anderson - Powell - Welbeck

Hernandez - Macheda

Subs: Johnstone, Wooton, Brady, Tunnicliffe, Petrucci, Nani, Henrique

Not sure why so many people are picking Cleverley, I know he missed out against Liverpool but he's had plenty of football this season already, with United, England and even Team GB. There are others in greater need imo.

Johnstone

Keane
Wotton
Fornasier
Buttner

Cleverley
Anderson
Powell

Welbeck
Macheda
Brady

De gea
Keane Evans wootton buttner
Cleverley Anderson fletcher
Powell
Hernandez welbeck

Could be one of those line ups like Italy had in the euros, 4 central midfielders. In reality I have absolutely no clue how we will line up for this, just hope it's a good game.

We'll use this for the players needing game time, rather than the youth.

Woudln't be surprised to see Lindegaard for this and De Gea for Spurs, depends what we expect Newcastle to line up like. The long balls and talk strikers will be more of an issue for De Gea.

This is tiring work. Out of our last 50 domestic cup matches, we've drawn Premier League opposition 31 times.

Is it just me, or is that odd?

Since when has Wotton become flavour of the month? Not sure hes near good enough personally.

Well, Rio probably needs to be rested, Vidic felt something in his leg and will probably be rested, especially as it's just the League Cup. Smalling is injured, Jones is injured, who else is going to play center back with Evans?

Are you saying you prefer Carrick or Michael Keane, or do you think we should start Vidic and Rio for this one?

Are you bored enough to have a look at Chelsea? :)

I have no idea if he's anywhere near good enough but it's a carling cup game, and apart from Rio and Vidic, he's the only defender who is fit for this.
