Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Dredd

If you've seen The Raid then you've seen this albeit this has a really cute chick playing the part of Judge Anderson and no martial arts. Loads of slow mo balletic shoot outs and it looks great in 1080p on an HDTV.

Seriously though, how is this so much like The Raid? I googled afterwards to see who had copied who but apparently this went into pre-production/was written first but the Director of this doesn't think they copied him either. feck off. This is too much of a coincidence. I demand answers!

Please clarify, which movie was written/pre-produced first?

Martha Marcy May Marlene - Thought it was great. It's pretty slow moving but there's a real feeling of unease that builds all the way through. More than a bit squirmy at the end. I'm not surprised that Elizabeth Olsen has been getting lots of praise, she's very good in this.

8/10

Was a good watch indeed. Don't you think Daniel Craig's a bit bland though? I don't think he can pull off the effortlessly suave, witty remarks all that well. The pacing was a little sketchy too I thought - it went from being a British Mission Impossible in the first 10 minutes to going overly slow for the next hour, and I felt it ended suddenly. Still thoroughly enjoyable.

Possibly but I at my least critical when watching Bond movies. If I'm entertained I'm happy.

The Last Seduction - A quite brilliant neo-noir. I don't know why but it reminded me a bit of Glengarry Glen Ross with it's amoralness and jazziness. Linda Fiorentino was amazing and just ridiculously sexy.

I forgot to mention, Hank from Breaking Bad is in this. He's still bald and honestly, he hasn't really changed at all considering that would be like 14 years ago.

That should apply to all blockbusters, to be fair. Most blockbusters are aimed at teenage boys(although they've found a whole new audience thanks to Twilight.. But I'm not even going there), so naturally they're not going to appeal to the rest of us. Which is why it's probably best not to over analyse.

I've never really seen the appeal of the Bond films, they are just too formulaic, kitschy (I think that's the right word) and done to death for me. I guess the older films have a special charm to them but I thought Casino Royale was just so damn boring and bland.

The plot of Casino Royale made absolutely no sense to me. It seems to rely on a bonkers Mi6 plan to get a brand new rookie agent to beat someone at poker (by chance too, without even giving him the gadgets to cheat!) so he can lose slightly more money than he's already lost, and he might be persuaded to flip, but then he gets shot in the end anyway. Absolutely nothing gets achieved at all, it's a terrible, terrible plan & Bond gets his Travellers whalloped off for no reason. Plus the car defibrillator is one of the silliest Deus Ex Bond gadgets ever (we aren't going to give you any way of cheating at this incredibly important game our whole rubbish plan relies on, but we will put a defibrillator in your car just in case someone tries to stop your heart during it...cos, you know, they will. Definitely!)

Everyone seems to love it though. It is very well made.

The Man From Earth - For such a small budget film, the idea and execution was brilliant I thought. It's shot in one room using just 8 characters and one of them claims to be 14,000 years old. Very engrossing and I was gutted when it ended. 9/10

from the IMDB FAQ...

Dredd was written and filmed long before The Raid. Dredd's screenplay was written in 2008 and leaked online in 2010. Principal photography on Dredd took place between November and December 2010. The Raid did not go into production until November 2010, and was filmed in March 2011. Until the Summer of 2010, Raid director Gareth Evans had been planning to make an entirely different film and put The Raid together over the next nine months. Dredd producer/screenwriter, Alex Garland: Honestly, I really don't believe that The Raid ripped off Dredd. And we didn't rip them off either. The timing doesn't allow for it - not that time-based logic has stopped many film journalists from suggesting that we stole their material.

Bullshit. Watch them both. There's no way that this was a coincidence.

Double film review of Judah...

Thank You For Smoking

Saw some of the geeks bantering about it on here and it's praise is well deserved. Cracking little film. Eckhardt manages to make a character that should be on a par with Hitler come across so likeable that you're rooting for him by the end, although this should come as no surprise if you've see In The Company Of Men. He's fantastic at these charming bastard roles.

The scenes between him, Maria Bello  and Champ from Anchorman were hilarious. William H Macy did his standard comical bumbling support role and there were great cameos from Rob Lowe, Sam Elliot and Robert Duvall. Highly recommended.

Zero Dark Thirty

Right. Not getting involved in the politics, accuracy or anything else when reviewing this other than to say it was a cracking film again from Bigelow.

The majority of it plays out like a sort of military 'Zodiac' with one characters almost obsessive search for Bin Laden and then you get that brilliant infiltration scene at the end which is really well shot and incredibly tense.

If it does have a weak point it's in the characterisation (not very fleshed out) but then I find that quite common in Bigelows work. As a director of action and tension she's fanstastic.

Again, highly recommended.

I agree. I think it's the best movie I've seen in the past year.

Almost Famous

One of the best movies I've seen in a while. I searched the thread, but apparently no one has reviewed it. The cast, story, and soundtrack are great. Actually, the soundtrack is amazing.

9/10

I could have sworn I had at some point. Anyway I agree, a great film.

"Almost" and "famous" are probably used so many times that it's difficult to search it.

Yeah the early 60s ones like Dr No and Goldfinger have a period charm which has long since turned sour.

I sat through a Death Wish marathon yesterday...well 1 to 4...i did not have 5.

Ist was obviously a good drama. Second was more satisfying if less belivable.

3 was mindless entertainment.

4 is just mindless.

liked Bronson...Mr ugly was great in those Westerns he was in.

Stupid films like The Day After Tommorow, Armageddon, Independence Day and the like are fun if you don't think about them too hard (or at all) but then there are films like the Expendables and anything Steven Segal ever made which are basically unwatchable.

I can't find it so I must have seen it before this thread existed. Or forgotten to review it.

You expect a Bond Film to make sense? Pedant.

Try watching Knowing... It must've been a homage to Shamalamamamayan. There's silly then there's depressingly silly.

Watched this today. Enjoyed it a lot. Tempted to go on a noir film marathon run now

Django Unchained

Yeah, it's as good as you'd hoped.

I love Westerns, I (usually) love Tarantino and this is exactly what you'd expect from the big chinned wonder.

Fantastic soundtrack, brutal violence and a constant smirk on your face from the whip cracking (pun intended) dialogue scattered throughout.

DiCaprio steals every scene he's in and it was great to see him play against type as such a sleazy evil little shit, Foxx is the surly anti hero who comes out of his shell as the movie develops (he has some great lines by the end) and Samuel L Jackson gets to play a role that requires a little more than just shouting and widening his eyes. In fact, he's probably the biggest cnut in the movie.

The only minor neg which is barely worth mentioning is Tarantino deciding to give himself a cameo (man can't act for shit) that pulled me right out of the movie for 5 minutes. Oh and James Remar having 2 roles. Was that necessary?

Anyway, minor quibbles and a worthy follow up to Inglorious Basterds. Will watch it again. On the big screen. Err..again.

Killer Joe - I'd heard this was fairly fecked up... but after about 70 minutes, I was thinking, this isn't all that bad really...

Then fried chicken got involved.

Anyway very good film, highly twisted and rather enjoyable... andMcConaughey is superb.

Anyone for potato salad?

I agree. It never felt disjointed or overly indulgent. Waltz was very good too, I thought.

Yea, the fried chicken bit got me as well. How hot was the blonde girl though? Even her accent was sexy as feck, I thought.

Taken 2 - As ridiculous as the first, but still a very enjoyable watch. Liam Neeson is quality.

Got Skyfall on my computer and will see if I can get Django. Really looking forward to seeing it.
