Gareth Bale is...The most expensive player ever?!

Given how often we go out and buy a player that excels against us, I can't see us paying the £30m+ to get him given how many times he's been almost completely nullified by us.

I was quite surprised to not see him switch flanks. He might have had more joy cutting in from the right, against Evra.

Still only 23 and has scope for improvement.

The phrase "hit and miss" applies to Bale both literally and figuratively.

I hope our policy on acquisitions has a bit more sophistication to it than that.

How many players have we bought under Sir Alex that have consistently flopped against us?

I can't remember RVP, Yorke, Berbatov, Sheringham, Young tearing it up against us.in fact there's probably too many to mention.

Do you really think the management sign players based on their performances against us?

On the flip side, how many players can you say we signed purely based their performance against us. Ronaldo(though we were already tracking prior to the pre season game), Silvestre?

Rio said we set the team up to stop Bale. It was Lennon that did the damage.

We've always been good at nullifying to oppositions best player. Henry never got a sniff at Old Trafford and outside of that great goal at Highbury he never did much.

The only player we consistently struggled to contain was Drogba and he was a pain in the arse whatever big game he was involved in.

I've never thought Drogba played too well against us, certainly not against Vidic anyways. I can only remember Torres in his prime really causing us issues frequently.

I think that SAF would take him in an heart beat.

Yorke was the one who orchestrated that 3-1 defeat v Villa in the first game of the season that led to everyone saying you can't win with kids. Cole scored a lovely goal in his first game v us to get Newcastle the draw - their first point of the season - and then did the same just a couple of months later to get another 1-1. I think they're the only two games he played against us before his move. Sheringham and RvP both had some lovely pieces of play against us - even last year RvP was finishing expertly while his team was falling apart v us. And it's not necessarily about winning or dominating the opposition, Sir Alex said just last year that he thought against us Jones showed a certain character that he was really impressed with - they lost 7-1!

Even the likes of Blomqvist had great games v us. I don't think we bought him because of that but I do think it helped. Sir Alex has so many scouts around the world watching 100s of players a season and I'm sure he trusts these scouts to identify quality players. Then Sir Alex will go out and look at these players for himself and decide whether they're Manchester United players. Playing against them will just accelerate that process. It's not a prerequisite to play well against us but I can't think of many players who have consistently underwhelmed against us that we've went out and bought.

I remember Saha tearing our defence to shreds on one occasion against Fulham. Was promptly snapped up in the January transfer window.

I do think it's a funny quirk of Sir Alex's that gets overlooked. He's so sure of his own judgement that one game against us can really elevate someone from a player we're keeping an eye on to a Manchester United player. He said we tried to buy Yorke a couple of years earlier and I suspect we might well have went in for him after that 3-1 win.

Well it's not entirely stupid, as it's probably more due to analyzing whether a player can do well during a whole season but can also raise his game in big occasions. That's something I think it's natural we look for in prospects.

Was that not the opening game of the 01/02 season when he scored a brace against us at OT? We didn't sign him until January '04. I'm pretty sure he didn't score against us when they beat us 3-1 at OT in the 03/04 season.

This..
Remember that game with Ruud also getting a brace I think...

We didn't sign him for a good 2 seasons or so after that game..

It's a well documented fact that Sir Alex likes to sign players who perform well against us. It's in numerous autobiographies.

I honestly think it'd take about 45m to take him away from Spurs and I can't see us paying it.

He's good but he's not £45m worth of good. Not just yet anyway. I still think he'll be going to Real Madrid for his next move. May play for us one day though.

The fact that he had to change the system to adjust against him, shows in itself that Sir Alex rates him.

If he's available, depending on what our winger situation is and the price i am sure we will be interested.

That's Neymar/Gotze money.

Probably less for James Rodriguez.

Think we'll be interested upto 35 and maybe slightly more, but not more that.

Very tenuous links for me, we come up against these players year after year, if we do end up signing them then of course you can point to that time they scored against us. Just as if we sign Bale in the summer I could say it was because of his performance at Old Trafford.

I just can't see that SAF wouldn't sign him because in his early development years he didn't perform against us and then go onto disregard what he's done against other opposition. That's far too myopic a stance to take.

Well Ruud's transfer was delayed by a year because of injury. But credit both the player and the club simply delaying the deal rather than cancelling it.

Regarding Bale, I'm sure Sir Alex would take him in a heartbeat. He tried to get him before, but wouldn't pay the premium then. Some how I don't see us being able to tempt Spurs to sell to us, especially if they're in the CL next season. A lot depends on where they finish in the league.

First of all if Bale wants to leave, most would agree that Madrid would end up having first option seeing as the two clubs seem to have some sort of affiliation. So unless Bale had his heart set on playing for us, it'd surely come down to money, the manager and the current state of affairs. He himself has mentioned that he'd like to play abroad too....whether that's something he sees towards the end of his career or during his peak years, it remains a mystery.

Looking back at yesterdays game, he was completely taken out of the game with the work of Jones/Cleverley helping Rafael. He got one or two dangerous looking balls, but we forced him into passing the ball square more often than anything. Unfortunately in the 92nd minute someone forgot Lennon existed.

Mate, you must have a terrrrrible memory!

ALL those players had great games against us before they signed! I'm a bit flabbergasted :)

Nor would Ferguson set the team up to counter him specifically if he didn't think he was a very, very good player.

Brwned, how would you know if Yorke, Sheringham, Cole and Blonqvist played well during their various games against us. Don't take this in a patronising way, but you were at most six years old when they signed. You can obviously look back and check if they scored, but to say Sheringham had some lovely bits of play, how many of his games against us have you watched bearing in mind you were so young when he signed.
