Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Yeah, but Bjork, therefor it's good.

I love Björk, that's why I thought the musical numbers were the best things about the film. I thought Von Trier better expressed his themes in Dogville, which is probably his best film. There's definitely something genius though about having Peter Stormare in this scene and making it work so well.

Searching for Sugar man - Brilliant, just a fantastic little story that kind of makes you consider talent, celebrity and the merit of hero worship. I'll be recommending this to everyone.

Kon-Tiki - great story ,also a true story about crossing the pacific on a raft in the 1940s

really enjoyed it

I thought Bjork's acting was fantastic as well in that movie, especially for a pop star. My favorite Von Trier movie. I love how Von Trier made it (and others) with all foreign actors playing Americans in America. Apparently he and Bjork had a massive falling out while filming it and no longer speak to one another.

It was very natural performance, in contrast to the film which I felt was a bit too contrived at times. He seems to prefer Swedish actors over Danish ones for some reason, kinda wished Stellan Skarsgård had been in it more for some added smarminess. Von Trier is by all means a complete loon so it's no suprise reallly.

oh and see Searching for Sugar Man, Nobby.

Just saw it the other night. Was very moved.

Just seen Dredd. Was brilliant, real throwback to the 80s exploitation sci fi films like Robo-Cop. It doesn't feck around at all, it's just pure action but I can't remember seeing a film which manages to represent the comics they are based on better.

I saw it at the cinema in 3D and enjoyed it. I thought at the time that the drug fuelled slo-mo shots were designed specifically for 3D. Did they translate well on a tv/pc?

End OF Watch Basically a cop buddy movie. The dynamic between the two main characters is brilliant and makes the film worth watching for this alone. Perhaps a bit light on plot and the ending was a bit too predictable but I really enjoyed this film. 8/10

7 Psychopaths A script writer's work meets real life. A bit confused at times but fun with some great actors. If you are bored one evening there are worse ways to spend an evening. 7/10

Yeah I watched Seven Psychopaths last night and I thought it was quality, sort of Tarantino-lite. Colin Farrell was the only boring character but I'd give it about 7.5/10.

Leaves of Green - Edward Norton plays twins, one a well spoken Philosophy professor who preposterously is coerced into returning to his roots and abetting his pot dealing hick brother in a crime with the ol' classic twin switcheroo. While in Dixieland the smart brother conveniently meets an incredibly deep and brilliant poet who it just so happens hangs around with his pothead brother and challenges his outlook on his roots etc and bleurgh, lessons were learnt, painfully (for the viewer and the characters) and philosophical ideas are forced at you from all angles while the story is ill conceived, the characters uninspiring and annoyingly one dimensional making this a quite painful watch in all.

Ghost Rider

OK so its a bad film, Nic Cage's worst film.
The story is passable could of been done better, but I love it, I have watched it many times.
Its a film that you watch with your brain in neutral, don't expect an Oscar winning film.
Says it all really when it was shown on Comedy Central Channel.

7/10 for me but more like 1/10 for the rest of you.

Looper. Wow. Sure, we're meant to disengage our brains, and yes time travel travel themed films are invariably nonsensical. I get that. I do. Honestly. But you hope for a certain amount of entertainment value that makes a movie such as this..er... worthwhile. Entertainment could equate to loads of tits. Or perhaps loads of car crashes. Or even better Hewitt Gordon's prosthetic nose falling off during scenes. But this movie fails miserably at almost everything. Set decades in the future, one could be forgiven into thinking we'd see the director's vision of the future. Instead the vast majority of the movie is set in a poxy Kansas corn field... Wow very Blade Runner you're thinking. But anyway a load of nonsensical nonsense later, the film does a very vague parody of Terminator without the score, quality action and Arnie. Rather, we have Bruce Willis doing his 'I'll be back' impersonation in the middle of that poxy Kansas corn field. Look just avoid this movie if you're looking for a good sci fi. In fact avoid it full stop and watch Knowing instead. At least you can laugh at Nicholas Cage.

Season of the Witch & Drive Angry are both worse than Ghost Rider. Not to mention Ghost Rider 2, Bangcock Dangerous...That one where he has the super power to see 4 seconds into the future.

Actually, the question "What is Nicholas Cage's worst film?" is up there with "What's the meaning of life?" as one of the great unanswerable posers of all time.

Looper was good. I hate you all.

People in the future drive Mazda MX5s. If I could sum it up... I'd say it was Heroes cum Terminator set in a poxy Kansas corn field....with a pair of tits flashed at the viewer at beginning of the film, just to keep folk interested.

You watched Drive Angry!

I like a crap film now and again, but I never even contemplated that one. The trailer put me off for life!

Cage films offers some kind of bizarre car crash fascination. I'm convinced there's a whole cabal of underground writers trying to outdo each other in deliberately writing the worst film ever for him, and only him to star in.

I didn't hate it as much as Spoony but it was a let down.

Watching Flight at the moment and I must say I'm liking it. Denzel Washington doesn't star often in shitty films.

Could be, they're exploiting his need for money because of alimony and creating a beautiful pattern of shit upon shit film. It is fascinating. The most fascinating thing of it is that he can actually be a very good actor with the right role and director, and there are some gems in his filmography, but the pile of turd he's built is just amazing.

Lincoln - It's alright. It's very well made, quite interesting at times and Daniel Day Lewis is fantastic, but it takes a while to get into it, and it's just quite a slow process in general. I did enjoy all the politics stuff, despite it being very black and white in terms of Republicans = good and Democrates = Bad (in a total cartoonishly villain way I might add), it was interesting to see Lincoln wrestle with the war/slavery dilemma and what h was prepared to do to get things to go his way.

The film was at it's worst though whenever it got into Lincoln and his family stuff. I hated Sally Field as his wife, thought she was terrible, and whilst I like Joseph Gordon Levitt, he had no place in this film really... all the father/son stuff felt really tacked on.

Anyway, if you like the idea of a film about the process of American Politics, and making deals to get stuff done, or just Daniel Day Lewis being great, then you'll enjoy this... otherwise you can probably afford to give it a miss.

Watching DDL in that though then inspired me to watch...

Gangs of New York- It's far from Scorcese's best work, but it looks fantastic (the first fight scene in the snow is a particular highlight) and Lewis is tremendous in it. It's also an interesting film from the perspective that pretty much every "gang" is reprehensible on some level, and so the lines of who is a "good" guy and who is a "bad" guy do get blurred from time to time... particular for the climax of the film.

Did they cover his time travelling exploits in San Dimas 1988?

I see a lot of people criticizing Nic Cage?!

- He gave us some amazing performances (Bad Lieutenant, Adaptation, Leaving Las Vegas, Raising Arizona etc)

- He gave us some AWESOME action films (Con Air, Face/Off, The Rock, Gone In 60 Seconds etc)

- Made the Wicker Man 100x more enjoyable than the shitty original

- This

- Called his son Kal El

- Fought some guy outside a nightclub and said "look into my eyes, you respect them? then you respect me"!

- Got Johnny Depp his first film role

- I'll say it again, MADE CON AIR

- Is an Oscar winner

You lost me at Wicker Man. Good effort though.

You might be onto something there.

Bill, you're conveniently letting Cage off the hook for his inability to say no to whatever trash he's offered

I like you Dirty Schwein. I like you almost as much as I like Nicolas Cage. And I do really like Nicolas Cage.

 I go to a film quiz with a team from work on the last Tuesday of every month. I am quite knowledgeable with films so I am quite high in demand to go to the quiz. However, I have a stipulation: if they want me to be in their team, the team name has to be Wicker Man (The Nic Cage Version) and so that's what we're called
