fergies team selections

Evra has been in poor form and for all you know Berbatov may have had a knock. Jesus christ.

Fair points of course, but the tactics/shape of the team at the weekend didn't need to be as fecked up as it was, there was no excuse for that and even less excuse for being so stubborn as to wait until 80 minutes before changing it.

What was so "fecked up" about that team and formation? Playing 433/451 away from home is hardly shocking from fergie is it? Especially somewhere like Sunderland where it's difficult to go and get a win.

Granted it didnt work, but he didnt wait until 80mins to change it, Berbatov came on at half time and there was an improvement right away.

With Giggs and Valencia injured and Park in pretty terrible form we struggled for options. Hence Macheda starting on the left then having to use someone as inexperienced as Bébé.

Will cost us the league title,he seems very pig headed in his use of certain players, why on earth he left berbatov and evra out last weekend is beyond me,,,,very strange.

I can only think they didn't play because they were both in a huff about getting their Armani bags soaked with shit after the burst pipe.

Its was a very strange decision to leave them both out - especially as we don't have a game for a couple of weeks and neither will be playing international football.

Not really. Or at least it depends how you define consistent. An average of 4 or 5 changes to each starting XI isn't really picking the same team consistently, is it?

My understanding of consistency in team selection would be that the core of the team stays the same. In the example of our CL winning season, the key players were almost always playing.
The 4 or 5 changes would be mainly for tactical reasons. Depending on the teams we play, would would bring in...say park for helping out the left or right backs, or we would bring in Scholes for more creativity or controlling the game. These are just examples of course.

IMO, i believe the term 'consistancy' in team selection should be directed towards the core players in any one team.

To be fair we've had a lot of injuries to deal with these past 18-24 months and I think that's why Fergie has probably had to rotate more than he would like. 06/07 and 07/08 the spine of the team was always (pretty much anyway) present; the back 5 would pick itself, you'd have Ronaldo and Rooney, and the rest would be rotated accordingly. It's only been because of injuries really that he's had to rotate so much.

Pretty stupid OP considering what we've won the past few years but there you go.

The fact we're all here, posting on an interwebs forum, and NOT sitting in an office inside Old Trafford tells us all, all we need to know.

We know shit.

Fergie will do right.

Can't someone please lock this thread now - if only for the OP's horrendous ignorance of grammar - sorry, ignorance of how to use a keyboard.

It's only natural that we've to rotate more given our current squad. Scholes and Giggs are older, we're being blasted by injuries of late to players who, 2 or 3 years ago could play just about every game: Rio, Brown, Carrick.

Also, the fact that we've lost a certain player who seemed invulnerable to injuries and was an absolute freak of nature with his fitness levels doesn't exactly help either does it?

I forget the exact figure but it's something like 150 games without keeping the same team.

A bit of a nothing statistic considering we started, I think, the same team against Liverpool and Bolton. We did have a midweek league cup matches for which we've made tons of changes, of course, but who cares about that.

I still don't get the complaints about Evra and Berbatov starting on the bench. Forget their form - one has been dire, the other excellent - they've both played on Sunday and Wednesday and Fergie obviously wanted a fresher team. The international break doesn't come into it at all. The question is how frehs they were on Saturday, not what happens two weeks from now.

Yet again we hand the initiative to an opposing team coming to Old Trafford. Whatever the result, I for one am sick of this happening now. And before someone comes along and calls us spoiled or moany pricks, it's plain as day that we're scared of City judging by our line-up tonight.

Eh?

More like; it's plain as day that we don't give a feck what City do, we'll be playing our game. 3 strikers, a winger and Giggs playing means not one feck has been given by Fergie, we're going out to attack them.

Mate, you hardly class Welbeck as a striker this season, do you? He's been playing wide practically every game he's been involved in. He's still class, mind, but not generally a goal threat. Rooney will be playing off van Persie I'd imagine so it won't be a case of two up top either. Young is also the most defensive of all of our wingers so his inclusion doesn't smack of an offensive overload.

I can see a lot of attempted long through balls from Carrick and Giggs tonight and not much play through the middle. Maybe I'm seeing it a lot different to everyone else, it's just my thoughts on the line-up. I hope I'm wrong, but it's how it's playing out to me.

Lol? How is 4-4-2 with giggs and carrick defensive

Tbf if all the other defenders are injured forcing Jones into defence then it's not like there are many different options. Don't think Giggs offers that much less protection than clev and is in better form. Ando still fluctuates, not like he's reliable for a big game.

He gets hammered if he's too defensive, ala April 2012, and hammered if he's too attacking? Which surely anyone can see this team is pretty attacking.

I like it.

I also like this thread, in a season where we did win the league.

40 minutes before the game actually starts.....That has to be a record!

They've left Aguero on the bench. Who is scared here?!

Scared of City? I don't like the lineup put out (because of Young, and Giggs in a midfield two), but that is anything but a defensive lineup. Also we had no choice with the defenders.

Did you see the wrong line-up?

To be fair to nahealai I think he's referring to the first incorrect line up in the matchday thread

Bizarre criticism. Spot on from Ferguson in my eyes and it comes down to form. Cleverley and Anderson are off beat at the moment so Giggs makes sense. Young is playing better than Valencia, Nani didn't do himself any favours against Chelsea. Welbeck, Rooney and Van Persie are obvious.

One thing it does highlight of course is the pressing need for midfield reinforcement in the summer. Yawn.

I forgot, those two have been marauding midfielders all season long.

I'm afraid I can't see anything else only plenty of attempting long through balls from midfield tonight, especially from Giggs, which will hand the initiative over to City time and time again.

Which one of the midfield two do you envisage picking up Silva, if you don't mind me asking? Whomever it is, I don't fancy the other midfielder to live with Barry and particularly Toure. I'd genuinely love to share your enthusiasm about this line-up, but I'm concerned at being overrun again in midfield.

Time will tell, I suppose.

You said we're running scared. That line up is a lot of things, defensive isnt one of them.

This is like Scholesy's 'if we win 100-0 the lineup was still wrong' moment.

Care to explain why Kagawa and even Nani aren't in instead of Young, then? Young has been very disciplined in recent weeks, but he hasn't set the world alight in an attacking sense. Ditto Welbeck. In fact, I'm very concerned at Welbeck's penchant for fading out of games after starting brightly. He works extremely hard to his credit, but often when we need him to be composed, he's found lacking.

If people saw beyond the personnel selected and judged them [urely on their attacking contributions to our side of late, then I can't see why it can't be seen as not being defensive. Giggs and Carrick will be static in central midfield as they won't want to expose our centre-back pairing and Young and Welbeck are in for their workrate defensively, pure and simple. If not, Nani and Kagawa would have been selected as they possess a far more potent attacking threat.

Where did I say that? I've expressed my (legitimate I feel) concerns about the line-up, but I'm not going to say it's the wrong one if we get the result. The result is what matters at the end of the day, and I'm more than happy to be proven wrong.

In recent weeks we've developed an annoying habit of inviting pressure onto our defence. Let's see if we can withhold it tonight.

I've really enjoyed our fluid, attacking football in that half. We've been class.

Considering how these were such laughable posts to many pre-game, I'd love to hear about your collective assessments of the opening 45 minutes that we've just seen.

We're still well in the game and in with a chance of claiming all three points, but I think we are dicing with danger continuing with that line-up.
