Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand and his feckING GIANT HAND.

Brilliant news. Though he's a bit of a knob at times, I think he genuinely likes the club and is a good person. I'm sure he'll be of great importance to Moyes within the dressing room, he's not the kind of guy that would organize a semblance of mutiny with the players I feel. And of course, he's still a very, very good player whose experience is invaluable. Great news all around, and good from Moyes to have kept him on.

He is a big time player. A winner of multiple major honours and he still has at least two good years left. We could not really afford to lose him at this time of major transition. We need players of his experience and success around.

Happy that he's signed for another year, but I don't think he should be a regular in defence unless we absolutely need him. Yes, he had a very good second half of the season just gone, but I think we need to be looking at playing Smalling, Jones and Evans more as we look to the future.

Delighted with this news. I'm sure that Rio will be one of the senior players that Moyes will use early on to help him get a feel for the squad.

Great leader both on and off the pitch and doesn't need the armband to demonstrate that. I love how Rio always leads the celebrations when we win, so passionate.

It's going to be like that quite naturally I reckon. What with Rio getting older and his fitness already being monitored carefully, add to that the fact that Vidic has returned strongly, Evans had a very good season and Jones has looked good at CB a couple of times in the second half of the season. I think he'll get games but not as many as this season.

Fully deserved, the best defender I've seen at United. The game where he kept Henry in his pocket effortlessly in his first season was the moment I knew his worth. But the concern is the longer we rely on him and Vidic in big games the less experience Smalling, Jones and to a lesser extent Evans can gain.

So weird seeing Moyes commentating on that...

I think it's quite sweet to hear his opinion.

But what does Sir Alex think? I don't think I've seen anything from Sir Alex about this? Shouldn't he really be saying something about arguably his best defender renewing? Is he on holiday or something? Will he be commenting on the renewal later or something? WHAT IS GOING ON? :(

He's a Manchester United legend.

He's obviously a complete and utter plum, but he's certainly qualified to be a United legend, fulfilling all the criteria to do so and then some. If he was an attacking player of the same talent, he'd have been one years ago.

David Moyes: “It is clear for everyone to see that Rio has had one of his best seasons with the club and I think even from the outside you can see what a big character Rio is around the dressing room so I am delighted he has signed a new contract and I am looking forward to working with him”

Rio Ferdinand: “I am delighted to have signed a new contract. Who wouldn’t want to play in this fantastic team in front of 75,000 fans each week, it has been an incredible journey and I am glad it will continue. I can now fully concentrate on my club career, which has worked well for me over the past few years”

“This is a great team to be part of and we are now moving into a new era with the club which is very exciting. I have met with David and I am really looking forward to working with him and winning many more trophies with this great club”.

Answer: Wayne Rooney.

Signed a new one year deal.

Fantastic news. His authoritative presence in defence based on immense talent and experience, along with his steady leadership will undoubtedly help the team settle quickly under Moyes next season.

If David weir is any kind of barometer, Ferdinand may have an extended career under Moyes

Never had a doubt that he would renew for another year. Hopefully we manage him just as well as this season and we get a similar level of performance out of him.

If only Kenyon had picked up the tab at their meeting all those years ago, he could have been a blue...

But then Chelsea fans couldn't boo him for having a brother that was racially abused by their fearless leader.

He's going to be very important in Moyes first season given his influence amongst the players, great news all round, he seemed eager to stay and I'm glad we didn't mess around like the Lampard/Chelsea nonsense.
