Liverpool vs ManYoo (Head to head)

I've decided to compare United and Liverpool's probably starting line-ups for next season.

Kirkland vs Barthez

No contest. Kirkland is probably the best goalkeeper in the country is not in Europe right now. The only thing is he's just back from a very serious injury but he's still going to be head and shoulders above whoever United have between the sticks.

Riise vs O'Shea

O'Shea is probably better defensively but Riise has more going forward. O'Shea just about edges it.

1-1

Henchoz vs Silvestre

We really missed Henchoz last season who is probably the best defender in his position in the league. Silvestre is good but doesn't come close.

2-1

Hyppia vs Ferdinand

What can you say about Hyppia. He's pure class. His only weakness is that he's a little slow. Ferdinand has an advantage over him in this respect but Hyppia doesn't tend to make at least one mistake every game. No contest. Hyppia wins.

3-1

Finnan vs Neville

Finnan is about as solid as they come as a right back. He's also support going forward. Neville is good all round but has a nasty habit of playing the other team's attack onside a lot. Finnan wins by quite a way.

4-1

Kewell vs Gigsy

Admittedly, this one is pretty close. They're both flair players and fantastically skillful but even United fans will admit that Giggs isn't half the player he once was. Kewell comes up trumps.

5-1

Hamman vs Veron

This is a case of opposite extremes. Hamman is a tireless worker that will run all day for the team. He's not got much flair. Veron is all flair and little heart. It's a toss up but since I'm feeling generous, I'll say Veron edges this one out.

Gerrard vs Keane

Well, there's no contest here. Gerrard is everything keane was about 4 years ago and more. Keane is like that favourite lame pup or perhaps more accurately rotweiller that United fans just can't find it in their hearts to put out of its misery. Not the player he used to be and well past his best, it's a thumbs down for keano.

Diouf vs ?

Will it be Solkskaer, Scholes, Fortune...who? Who knows. Who cares! Whoever it is, you know that over the course of the season, people are going to realize that he's a poor excuse for a winger and not a decent replacement for Beckham. In any case, I've got a feeling Diouf is going to come good next season so since I gave veron the thumbs up, I'll balance it out with diouf winning this one.

Solskaer/Scholes vs Baros

No contest. Baros wins. No need to even comment on this one.

8-2

Owen vs VanNistleroy

This is too close to call. Both superb players. Owen looks really sharp in pre-season and I think will eclipse VanNiiiistleroy this year but if we're to go on form, VanNistleroy has to edge it.

Finally, the manager rating

Houllier vs SAF

Unfortunately, I have to admit that Houllier hasn't cut it yet in the big league whereas SAF has proven himself over and over again. No contest.

Liverpool 8 - United 4

Conclusion...if all goes well and we get lucky with injuries, we have easily got the players to finish above ManYoo next season. Whether this will be good enough to win us the title or not is dubious. I see a disastrous season aheand of United next year much like when SAF sold Stam for personal reasons and replaced him with the geriatric Blanc. :D

Baros didn't get a proper chance last season because of Heskey. Houllier has hopefully learned from his mistake. You guys may be in for a shock. :D

I thought Liverpool were suppose to win the league last season after finishing ahead of United. Good luck in the UEFA Cup and challenging Blackburn, Chelsea, and Everton for 4th place. Honestly, I do think Liverpool could go as high as 2nd...but that depends on Newcastle's D, Arsenal's ability to resign Vieira and Pires and find a solid GK, and Chelsea's team chemistry with all the new faces. United are still the strongest team in England.

I think I'm going to have to bookmark this thread for classic threads for next year. :) And of course, my predictions were based upon what I think will happen next year but what happened last year influences that. That's why I can't really write VanNistleroy off as going to be worse than Owen next season. I'm not sure who's going to come up trumps in that one so I gave it to you guys cos I'm biased. :D

And before kirkland got injured, on the form he was showing, yes, I would have taken him over any other keeped in Europe including the dive for the cameras over-rated kahn. :)

I'm not from Chicago. From Ireland, just living in Chicago, mate, so I have no idea what happened to that 5 year plan. :D

But think about it. We were pretty close to winning the title two years ago and then lost Anelka and litmanen and Henchoz (for a season). Now we've got kewell and Finnan. We're stronger than we were two years ago and United, if anything have gone backwards on what they were last year. I'm not saying we're going to win it but I think we've got players of a sufficient quality now that could win it given a bit of luck with injuries and if the manager uses them right.
Write us off at your peril. :)
 
By the end of the summer Chelsea might have a squad full of well known seasoned pro's

One other thing. I think most of you undervalue the contribution Beckham made with his free kicks. Dead ball specialists are hard to come by. Will Veron make up for the short-fall. I don't know but I doubt he'll be anywhere near as good as Beckham even if he knocks a few free kicks in. That's a serious loss to your team and make no mistake, you're going to notice it.
 
Probably not Stanley, but I seem to remember people talking about the Arse's foreigners about 10 years ago and laughing. It didn't take long for those smiles to be turned upside down. Chelsea could well be a title contender next season depending on who else they get in the next month or so.

Beckham has taken about 20 free kicks this year and scored 3.

I can only remember Veron taking 3 in his career and hes scored 2. And the other forced a fantastic save if i remember rightly.

Hopefully not, Stanley. :) And, will you need to watch out for us? Maybe, maybe not! I'm taking a wait and see attitude on this. I think we've got the players to mount a serious challenge. Whether the manager is able to use them or not is still a big question. Also, those two new french kids didn't look half bad, did they!

But i remember Veron being allowed to take free-kicks over the cockney blonde one on rare occasions.

v.s Your team this year in December, 3-0.

v.s Bolton in the 01-02 season, and i think he took another one in the same game that was saved.

But im sure he has taken a few more.
