Gareth Bale is...The most expensive player ever?!

Ancelotti said he'll play part of the match and that he'll play on the right.

Madrid do have 4 defenders injured, but they've still got Carvajal, Ramos, Pepe, Nacho - so I'm not expecting to see Bale as emergency fullback.

Every photo/video of Bale in Madrid so far has looked weird, especially in training, he looks like a complete outcast, and nobody wants him to be there. Back to England in 2 seasons.

What would actually constitute a successful season for Bale in terms of:

a) goals scored
b) assists made
c) trophies won and perceived contribution???

Not necessarily looking for precise answers obviously, but it would be particularly interesting to see what Vato and Jojojo's opinions are.

Barring a CL winning season with Bale playing a decisive role, it just seems like the deck is stacked against him even if he performs very well. It seems bizarre that a 20 goals in all competitions season could possibly be perceived as a poor one for a new winger for example, but that's basically what he's up against unless he somehow manages to fill Ozil's assist void as well.

What's the expectations on him as a Galactico in terms of performance level? Figo level? Post injury Brazilian Ronaldo level? Or has C. Ronaldo's ridiculous level meant that anything under 40 goals a season will be considered inadequate?

Ronaldo has to be gay? I mean surely no straight man can be that camp?

David Walliams.

Quite how many straight men have a child with an anonymous mother, that they are in full custody of, is another question though.

I reckon he should be aiming for 20 goals and roughly the same for assists throughout the season, in all comps. That's probably a realistic target all things considered.

As for trophies, well that's a team achievement.

He'll score more than 20. The step up dominating teams is going to be huge for him. I reckon he get at least 30 in all comps.

I can put a lot of money on this not happening. He was the main man for Spurs, they relied on him heavily for goals and he provided. At Madrid, Ronnie is the top dog, and Ancelotti will be wanting Bale to be playing more of a team player role than trying to shoot every time he has the ball at least 10 yards from the box.

Someone's goal tally may well be affected.. and if it is Ronaldo then I could see him leaving in the near future.

The goals count is attainable for sure but the assists would mandate an Ozil-type level of productivity. Even if he managed that there's the question as to whether it would be enough to placate the fans. As you say, alot rides on how well the team does.

That's the weird aspect - would 20-30 goals in all competitions even be enough to qualify him as a success? Alot would depend on what level Ronaldo kept scoring at.

He will be a success if he scores crucial goals that win them the biggest tropheys. 4-5 goals in diffcult moments for Real would count far more than, say, 40 goals vs inimpressive opposition. He was bought not to score as many as Ronaldo but to rescue Real when Ronaldo and the other Real attackers have a bad day at the office.

€100M for Bale. I wonder if Levy still goes to bed at night cackling like a maniac enjoying the fact that he got away with this colossal robbery.

Was Perez that desperate for a big name signing after Neymar went to Barca that he couldn't see he got massively robbed by Levy on this deal?

I think he will score 25-30 goals if he plays every week. Real create so many chances he can't fail to. Ronaldo will probably bag 50 though.

Indeed, surely he has to be judged on how he influences the big games like semi-finals and finals of the CL, and games against Barca then filling his boots against the likes of Getafe and Levante.

I've been extremely critical of Bale in the past, but I'm really looking forward to his debut tonight. Should be fascinating.

If Bale scores 20-30, Ronaldo's rate must decrease. This whole "stick 2 world class attackers in a team together and they'll continue at the same rate" never works. Look at RvP-Rooney last season.

Yeah I agree but I can't see the sense in signing Bale (who I think is a quality) and selling Ozil though for half the fee. It would have made more sense to keep Ozil imo.

Apparently, they think that Isco will be even better than Ozil. There was no point to keep Ozil if he was going to play second fiddle to Isco.

Personally, I reckon that an attacking formation of Isco, Ronaldo, Benzema and Bale is significantly more potent than a formation of Ozil, Ronaldo, Benzema and Di Maria.

Yep, Isco is the "Spanish" Ozil so to speak.

Like you say their is a great balance to that team, both Bale and Ronaldo can play either wing, as inside forwards or out and out wingers. They can stretch teams wide with pace and flair, or come in tight and play quick 1-2's and shoot.

If the attack works in theory like it should do, they could go on to break the scoring record for a season.

While the debate continues about the true price Real Madrid paid for Gareth Bale (91 million euros according to the Spanish club, 101 million if you believe Tottenham Hotspur), Carlo Ancelotti justified the extravagant outlay, adding that Spurs had received more lucrative offers for the player. The coach pointed out that Bale’s desire to play for Madrid outweighed generous bids from elsewhere: “Tottenham had bigger offers but he wanted to play here and that’s what made the difference”.
Today, L’Equipe report that Manchester United tabled a staggering 150 million euro bid for the Welsh winger. “According to our sources, the identity of the club who attempted to sign the 24-year-old midfielder is none other than Manchester United, who made an offer close to 150 million euros,” the French sports daily claimed.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has hoped to sell Bale to the highest bidder and is believed to have been studying a number of bids in excess of Madrid’s – such as those of United, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.

No way did we do that. Again 25m for Fabregas, no way we'd bid 125m for Bale, either that or there's some very strange decisions going on behind the scenes.

Shut up, we never offered 150 million. Surely not?

I suspect they've done that trick of combining the transfer fee with what he would have cost us in wages - a sort of "United were willing to commit this much," figure.

The Spanish press had assumed the rival bidder was PSG, I don't know why L'Equipe would have special knowledge of United.

I'm unsure if Madrid will see the best of him from the right, where he started. Most of his best work for Tottenham came from the left or centre, he even moved to the left before he scored tonight.

Enter... David Lee Roth

true story... I was working in Tahiti back in the 90's and David lee Roth was there and through my work I ended up chatting to him for a few hours. He was there with a woman who I assumed was his girlfriend at the time. the way they acted it seemed to be the case but it turns out he is gay. Not sure what was going on then.
