CL Group Stage, Matchday 1

Sorry, duf. And Eto'o. :D

Oregonna score a few more do you think? Call me an old Sage but I knew we we're gonna score against Basil in extra Thyme!

The hell? Aubameyang for Hummels? Who is play CB now?
Bender, I guess with Mhiki next to Sahin in central midfield. At least, that was the plan before Weidenfeller got sent off.

Celtic after weathering a bit of a storm in the first 10/15 mins have given a good account of themselves since and if not for a few poor attempted crosses and throws up around the Milan box by Matthews could even count themselves unlucky not to be heading in at the break 1-0 up. AC Milan who look very poor are there for the taking.

Barcelona look shitter under Martino to be fair. Can't see them winning it this year.
Have you even watched more than one game to make such an absurd statement? I respect your opinion that they won't win the Champions League, but the first sentence is pure nonsense. Martino has come in and done a good job thus far. He's pushed up Xavi and Iniesta higher up the field - he's obviously spotted that Xavi is past it - thus the centre-backs have to travel a bit more up the field and distribute the ball. The pressing, though not as good as the 08-11 period - looks much, much better. Look at the first goal scored last weekend against Sevilla. Barcelona had eight players high up the pitch... I, too, don't think they'll win it, and that's to do with Pique, who still doesn't look mentally right. There's also a second reason for them not winning it this year and that's to do with the lack of a #9. It's become too easy for defenders to collapse on Messi and disrupt Barcelona's rhythm.

I've munsoned the thread.
*sobs*

He'll break it and Ronaldo will too I'd expect, who's close to Messi's tally too.

Nistelrooys tally was pretty fantastic when you take everything into account. Messi has only levelled that while also playing in the apparent greatest club side ever, playing a handful less games.

Di Stefano's record was the most impressive though. 49 in 58, mental.
Gerd Müller had 66 goals in 74 european games, and 35 goals in 35 games in the european cup.

So,

conceiding a goal, while not having one of your CB in position because he was just on his way back after not being allowed back on the field earlier, losing your best defender to an injury and having your GK sent off. Oh and the coach is sent to the stands.

What a clusterfeck of a half that was.

Hard to take a comment like that seriously when they have yet to lose a match under Tata. Of course, I'd agree that they are looking sloppy atm. Cesc back to being his invisible self. Adriano is, at best, a backup. But the inability to capitalize on a high line is hard to comprehend really. Like Xavi on for Cesc and Tello/Pedro for Alexis

calm down pal, their performances against the Spanish cannon fodder mean feck all, so it's fair to draw conclusions from their performances in the Champions League. Yes, I watched some of their games in Spain this season and I still think that their level has dropped. Maybe Martino has done a good job so far but failing to strenghten this defense will prove their downfall once again, especially in Europe.

I carefully watched their games against Atletico (both games) and against Sevilla and they were far from convincing. Today is not that different.

Well no, when you put it like that, not great.

No excuses for Barca and Real to lose any La Liga matches to other teams given the way finances are now.

Sorry man, but that does sound too clusterfeck too be true!

BBC: "Yes, it can as goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller is given a red card for deliberate handball."

I assume it was outside the box - but this sentence is sort of funny, a keeper sent off for deliberate handball. I mean, that's their job.

I am calm, I wasn't taking a dig, or anything of that sort, but I was expressing what I thought about that statement. Thus far, Martino has shown that he's a much, much better tactician and leader than Vilanova, who did nothing revolutionary to change the problems at Barcelona - the main one being the end of the "Xavi era". Their level has obviously dropped since 08-11, but their level will IMO rise to a much better standard than last season.

Watch the last 10 minutes of the Dortmund game and you will believe it. I don´t want to do it myself.

What did the Dortmund keeper do to get a red card for handball?
Napoli put a long ball behind the BVB defense, Weidenfeller rushed out but Higuaín got there first and poked the ball towards the goal. Weidenfeller stopped the ball with his left hand.

I still don't get why Hummels gave over Higuain to Schmelzer instead of marking him himself. They sure know he is quite good in the air and well Schmelzer is not exactly a beast when it comes to heading a ball.

Maybe you're right, I was just expressing my impressions of them so far this season. Maybe ''shitter'' was harsh, for which I appologize to FCBarca, but their defense is just laugable. They were a ridiculously good side between 2008 and 2011 and that compensated for their defensive flaws, but I think now they're not that dominating as a side and concede too many chances. If a Barcelona side between 2008 and 2011 was leading Ajax 1-0 at home, you just knew the match is 99% as good as over. Now, things seem a bit different.
