Post Match Vs Sunderland

Adnan wow.The kids going to be a star let's hope the bean counters keep him here be gutted if he signed for someone else after we've seen what he can do.De Gea fantastic we've got a great crop of young lads who can take this team on to great things maybe it won't happen this year but in the years after I think we're in for some great times.

I'm in a very fragile state of mind right now Cina, a lot of shit is going over my head.

How are you anyway old friend? Much happening in your life?
Busy mate, you?

Been awfully negative around here without you. I've almost been positive about things like Fellaini and Moyes to make up for it. It makes me feel dirty.

My trademark optimism was almost shattered after the West Brom game. feck me that was awful.

Thought it was a good win, Sunderland were good and worked very hard, coming back from Ukraine and getting the win is a good result.

I thought Nani and Januzaj brought a lot to the team, there's still more to do there, Nani in particular could have put in some better balls, but I thought the main issue in attack was RVP/Rooney who weren't anywhere near their best, particularly in the first half. When they're back fitter, they could link up really well with those two.

The main issues are still defensively where we're still suffering from lots of individual mistakes. Some of it is hopefully players like Rafael not being particularly sharp yet. I think at the back as well we need to stick on a settled partnership, consistency in defence is very important. Additionally still think we suffer from where Clev doesn't take the right defensive positioning in the middle. Quite a few occasions where Evra had pushed up, Januzaj was also obviously high, and then we had Clev running ahead of them on the left wing. He needs to just hold his position when that happens so if the move does breakdown someone is in a position to cover.

I had such an erection of negativity coming on to the Caf that day, you should've seen me.

Jones recovered well to get in a saving tackle after his blunder and went on to have an impressive 2nd half. Rooney, Van Persie and Vidic seemed to be having their own little contest of who could put in the worst display; they were awful. Nani was good in patches, should have done better with the volley in the first half. Brilliant save from De Gea. Januzaj the best player on the pitch.

Thought Sunderland put in a lot of effort first half so hardly a surprise that they seemed to tire in the 2nd.

Shocking start to the game but we grew into it and produced one of our better performances this season.

Delighted to get the three points, even if we did make hard work of it.

Until we scored we looked bereft of belief: Every time they attacked we looked terrified, every time we attacked we lacked conviction.

Despite his experience Vidic was not a leader today. He has not been anything close to his best all season frankly and when we needed him to bring composure to the team he failed to. All I can say is thank God for David De Gea.

Likewise, thank God for Adnan Januzaj. Maybe its because he's new to the team so he's too green to be afraid but he showed a willingness to run at players and make things happen that went beyond Nani vs West Brom and his two goals were sweetly taken. Januzaj's goals really lifted the team. There were no vintage performances but everyone got a shot of confidence thanks to them and we stopped the stupid, aimless crosses to nobody and started attacking across the deck which was much better.

This thread is about tonights game.

The best part of the game was when Johno was forced to take out Welbeck to stop him running in behind and O'Shea looking really guilty about it afterwards and apologising. Oh, and the Januzaj goals were good too I guess.

I thought we look quite disjointed; Moyes still hasn't got United either attacking or defending as a team. There were far too many big gaps between players with no-one willing to run into them.

I can understand him wanting to set up the side to try and stretch Sunderland given how difficult we've found it to break down teams recently, but the movement and covering runs were too poor for it to work well imo. I really think it's a question of work ethic (or lack thereof) although today might be a step in the right direction if he can get it to click at some point.

Agree with this, Januzaj was by far the best player on the pitch always looking for the ball willing to keep hold of it and was always our main goal threat.
I thought Sunderland were poor, tried hard but they look a poor side.
Main thing today was the result.

I thought Carrick was excellent, great touch, nice passes in tight spots, kept things going. Dunno what we wouldve been like without him.

Would like to see more movement, instead of Rooney coming deep and wanting it at feet and our wingers staying wide it would be nice to see little diagonal runs from us or going in behind to join up with RVP

- It's been a joy to watch Adnan's progression through the youth ranks and now into the first team. This time last year he was still playing for the U18s but has handled every step-up with ease. Truly believes in his ability to affect a game at every level. He was a constant threat today and that second goal was special.

- We need to add some patience to our build up play. Pinging in all of those early crosses is soul destroying (a tad melodramatic I know). Out of 30 crosses today just 3 were accurate. Three. They're largely a waste of time and the ball inevitably gets cleared then we have to win possession back and start building up a new attack all over again. It's infuriating at times. We are able to carve out openings with through balls and playing one-twos, the insistence of pumping aimless cross after aimless cross into the box time and time again is just fecking pointless.

- I think the comeback might be psychologically important to the team. We did it again and again last season and it was clear the team believed they could come back no matter the deficit. This season it hasn't really happened so I think this will be an important reminder to fight to the end. They still have it in them.

- Nice that Moyes has done away with the 'defensive winger' thing, in the league at least.

If United had been playing a marginally better side, they'd have struggled to get back in it. Sunderland were very wasteful in the first half when you defended appallingly badly. It could easily have been 3-0. Man City showed how to destroy your poor defending.

The second half completely turned around because Sunderland looked to preserve what they had. Their defending for both goals was poor, although the finishes were great. From Sunderland's perspective, on another day they'd have got away with a 1-1. The second goal was a pearler.

So I don't think you're out of the woods yet. There are still many individual defensive errors taking place. Van Persie doesn't look remotely fit(maybe two weeks will help) and Carrick is quiet.

You did enough today against an odd team with some strengths but weaknesses that prevent them from succeeding.

We were unlucky not to have scored more. Especially with the RVP chance right at the end where he inexplicably toe poked it nowhere on target. Pretty much sums up the form our strikers have been in so far this season. None are sharp and even Rooney had a few bad touches here and there. We just haven't fashioned enough clear chances.

Regardless, Januzaj obviously impressed greatly today but he is far from ready to start every match for us. He will be one for the future and there will be matches where he will shine like he did today, but also ones where he would wish he never got out of bed for.

Definitely an important result for us and hopefully we will continue to improve with each match. We really need to sort out our defence/midfield because we are giving teams too many easy chances, especially on the counter attack.

Not a good game at all, but we won, and that is what's most important at the end of the day.

Still, we need to start playing some good football soon. We've played 10 serious competitive games now, but we've only really looked impressive in 1 and a half game. 2 and a half if we count the Swansea game(where we were extremely effective, but not really impressive).

Our midfield was once again the weakest link. Cleverley is simply just not good enough. We should really swap Cleverley with Kagawa.

Not convinced with this Jones-Vidic partnership. Rooney and RVP looked like they lack some confidence.

Januzaj had a great game and scored 2 fantastic goals. Well done to him.

Nani also played very well which is good to see.

De Gea's save kept us in the game.

Happy we won. Now we need to win a few more games to get our momentum going.

We don't seem to have our trademark -- off the ball movement. Noticed that very often when someone has the ball, he seems to be looking around to pass. No options. Thats how we lose the ball/possession.

At 1-0 down at half time I was in full paranoid muppet mode, thinking Moyeses was taking us into the relegation zone.

Couple of goals later, and all looks a lot rosier, and 2 weeks of no game to relax in!

VP certainly doesn't look too sharp at the moment, his chance was an outrageously poor decision on shot choice.
Nani is clearly finding his way back in.

Cleverley shows what we lack when Fellaini plays. I can only see Fellaini becoming massively effective when our front 4 are all on song.

Janujaz was the stand out by a mile, couple of great goals, gliding past people, makes Valencia and Young's recent output look embarrassing in comparison.
Young has to be struggling now, as there's at least 4 players ahead of him.
Kagawa isn't doing much better, as now he's behind Janujaz.

Our defence wasn't particularly good but that's hardly news anymore. Our attack wasn't much better either except for Adnan who saved the day. Our front 4 barely created any chances before our first goal, Sunderland could have been 2 up at this point of the game. Evra was our most creative player while we were trailing the game. Januzaj's debut start was really exciting though, that' s a huge positive from the game.

Januzaj's promise and goals are no surprise...however, one would have to be delusional to think yesterday's performance is the turn-around that we hope for. Fantastic to win, though I cringe at Moyes' continued preference for 4-4-2.

Evra was also there most creative player, I can't wait for the day we actually go 433 and if this means we move Rooney on so be it and while we are at it replace Evra and Rio. All been great servants but with Rio and Evra its age catching up and with Rooney we can't play 433 with him as he cant play anywhere but up top so we look over run in the midfield when we play 4411.

Why cringe at Moyes employing 4-4-2 when Sir Alex had done exactly the same to great effect during his tenure?

Besides being disjointed and individual errors in the defence yesterday I'm also hoping there was no specific instructions to cross early - too many high hopeful crosses into the penalty area for my liking. Just made it too easy for their goalkeeper and defence.

Okay, Sultan, you win the prize for the scariest post on the Cafe today. Could it be Back to the Future for Manchester United football? :nervous:

United's performance at Sunderland was not much better then last year at the stadium of light, and is remnant of a lot of away performance down the years which has always been the hallmark of champions. Getting the result when not being in top form.

Personally I thought the formation was more 4231, simply because of the personnel.
Nani and Januzaj plus when Kagawa plays, are very comfortable in coming deep and into central areas and helping even or overloading the midfield numbers against the opposition.

You mean we become a Stoke or West ham? United have too many quality ball players that to be the case.

We're clearly still not out of the woods yet, but the nature of the win will do wonders for us. Winning from behind away from home will be important for our belief.

The international break has come at a good time for us. Then we have a run of three winnable games before Arsenal at home. We'll know more after that run. I think we'll be in good shape.

I think that was down to rvp and Rooney not being on their games and so not showing centrally as much, also tbf there were a couple of balls which I thought were the right idea, they just didnt come off.

Having said that it does feel at times that both of them are playing too high, need one of them to drop back more.

I can't help but think there must be something in this. All of our players do it, including Nani who clearly likes to take people on rather than hit and hope. Januzaj was the one player who didn't do it and it was such a breath of fresh air.

The other thing we did again is defend really deep. I think our back four did push up a bit when we managed to control possession a bit more, so I'm hopeful they've been sitting deep because of a lack of confidence in the midfield (which is solvable) rather than because that's what Moyes wants them to do.

Looked like the same rubbish was being served up 1st half tbh, very nervous at the back, no chances created against one of the worst teams in the league. As it turned out though, yesterday was a massive positive, not just the result but the way it transpired. There has been so much negativity but in the face of adversity, a youngster pulling the club out of the mire in spectacular fashion is in keeping with the Manchester United legacy and I have to say fair play to Moyes for believing in Januzaj, he deserves huge credit for it, it lifted the team on the pitch and has created positivity amongst the fans and the watching media. Yesterday was an eye opener, I have found it difficult to pin point what was wrong with the team, but when Januzaj scored the first, and for 30 mins afterwards we looked like the "Manchester United" we know, it screamed to me belief and confidence, all of a sudden we looked like we could score from every attack. It is also a positive that some under performing players who don't feel\fear they have to do it for this guy who isn't Fergie, now have Januzaj to think about for a place in the team, we should kick on from here. Was the first time since Moyes arrived I felt like he took a risk or made a positive decision that had an outcome that felt like he belonged at Manchester United. Good day.
