"Is he worth the outlay?"

No, he never was from the moment the fee was announced. He never will be. That isn't his fault either. The sooner people forget about the fee and look at his abilities, talent and previous good form in central midfield with a degree of realism then the better.

Those with an issue in regards to the fee needn't look further than David Moyes and Krusty the Clown in the Chief Executive office. Constantly getting on Fellaini's back about the fee will send you mad. He was better against Sociedad and hopefully he will continue to improve and play like the effective, very good midfielder we've previously seen in the Premier League over the past 3 seasons.

There's a thought - indeed, yes. I read posts stating that he would be fine if we had spunked just fifteen mill on him - and I'm honestly a bit baffled. We all know we overpaid for him, that has been well and truly established. Perhaps it's time to just let the bloody fee go and see whether he can be of some use. Which I think he can.

We haven't seen the best of Fellaini yet. He is a shadow of the player he has shown at times at Everton, and it can only really be down to the mental stress of stepping up a level.

I don't think Sundays games is necessarily made for him (prefer Cleverly and Carrick for this one) but if we are going to keep ruling him out of big fixtures because of his ability then we may as well sell him.

Completely agree.

When people say don't keep mentioning the fee, that's kind of impossible.

People are fretting about playing a fella we've paid £28million on, against a team at home!

Someone of that value should be a massive star player, not some chump we have to be very careful who we field him against!

What's so bad about it?

Just some of the phrases man.

"Shuffle him upfield into that bespoke withdrawn aerial target-man role and Fellaini becomes a Xavi of the upper body, a player with a truly spectacular line in Velcro-Touch full-torso link-up play, perhaps even the best chester of a ball currently playing in world football."

God that makes him sound fecking brilliant! Play him upfront on Sunday Moyesy!

Fellaini has a diligent turn as a defensive midfielderbut it is by no means the real point of him. Instead we have now a dilute, pre-watershed Fellaini, a player whose United career has so far felt a bit like sitting through the compete works of Jean-Claude Van Damme with all the kung fu kicks and chopped windpipes edited out, only leaving in the dialogue and the shots of him driving his jeep around or staring moodily out of the window, while a soft metal power ballad yowls away in the background. All very well but what's happened to all the good bits?
Every article is full with that sort of overly long unfunny nonsense but the retards in the comments suck it up...
As wonderful as ever from Barney
brilliant from Barney
Barney is one of my favourite writers, simply for the sheer delight that shines from every intricate, swooping sentence of his prose.
Pass me a bucket.

Yes, they're fretting - which is utterly pointless. And somewhat annoying as it seemingly never ceases to outrage some people that he is not what they...what? Expected? Unless they're somewhat uninformed they should've known he isn't a complete midfielder of the sort who would make our CM Bayern Munich class instantly.

We overpaid - it's a matter of fact. We were always going to overpay for him, given that we needed midfielders and he played for a PL team that had no real need to sell him. It's fecking senseless to keep moaning about the fee. It's done, he's here, and unless we think Moyes has now spent all he's ever going to get from uncle Malc - well, forget it, and give Fellaini half a chance. Whether he can be useful or not doesn't depend on the bloody fee, does it?

He's the best chester of the ball i have ever seen tbh. Not the most remarkable of features to have but it can be rather useful depending on where they play...and sadly as a DM he isn't going to be able to utilise it.

I suppose he could just say "at the end of the day, he's got a good touch for a big man, y'know, that's something he's got in his locker, but obviously he can do a job for the gaffer".

But what would be the point?

Do you honestly not find the vast majority of football articles entirely vacuous and boring? I'd much rather somebody at least tried to flesh things out.

Unless you think it makes you more credible to be actively anti-aesthetic, in which case fair enough.

Agree with this, except for "we were always going to overpay for him". He did have a release clause after all. Even if Everton were desperate to keep him, we could have had him for 23m. Plus I suspect Martinez would have been happy enough to replace Fellaini with McCarthy anyway, seeing as he had worked with McCarthy previously and he suits his style of play better. None of this has anything to do with how well Fellaini will play of course, it just adds another layer of frustration to what was a pretty stupid deal on our part.

I'm not surprised people are focusing on the price though, even if it's unfair on Fellaini. We laughed pretty hard at the Carroll and Torres fees, and we laughed even more when they tried to dismiss the ridiculously overpriced fees they payed with faulty logic. It's only natural for us to regret making a similar mistake, particularly when Fellaini has underperformed so far. Again, it's unfair on Fellaini but hardly surprising.

It would probably be for the best if we could judge Fellaini without taking his price tag into account but, realistically, that probably isn't going to happen. Hopefully Fellaini improves to the point where the fee we paid doesn't seem like such a poor decision.

Arsenal are gonna embarrass Fallaini if he plays on Sunday. They'll literally just run rings around him.

True  I just skim over most articles tbh.

That really is a stretch as well. I don't deny folk can see more being here than on tele...a point I have made in he past but sorry not for me.
Laboured performance with the sending off as inevitable as the sun going down and rising the morning after.

He will get better for me...but as I said at the time worth that sort of outlay? Not for me. We shall see.

Ye we paid a lot but we probably wont know if he is worth it until a couple of years down the line - everyone has had a good rant about the transfer window so it is hardly even worth discussing now

I wasnt actually trying to make any comment about seeing more at the game (although there is a lot extra you can see, especially off the ball movement which is important for a defensive mid) and many who watched on TV also noted an improved performance anyway.
It was just strange getting such a different vibe at the match and then reading the opposite on here.

At the moment, it just seems that all those who didnt want him in the first place are refusing to acknowledge that he does make us stronger in the middle - apart from the City shambles, we have conceeded very few goals when he has been on the pitch. Still he has a lot more to offer and just needs to settle.

He is filling a role we dont need. Hes not an attacking midfielder, hes not defensive, hes not creative, hes not a box to box.

Came on and won a few headers. Its a start but he looked a lot more comfortable in the short time he was playing.

He was comfortable in his best position: behind the striker, going for the long balls launched in his general direction.

Why do you feel the need to be a negative &^*%^ after our best result of the season against the best side we played against all year?

I think the match today precludes criticism of any player's performance. Generally speaking, Fellaini isn't very good. The large transfer fee simply makes the signing look worse.

Certainly did his part today. Came in to be a target man, and did that. No need to criticise him today.

He's a good lad. A bit slow though. I can't help it but he reminds me of Berbatov in the sense that he comes on and is much slower than the rest of them, not sure about his role.

Was the right decision to bring him on imo and he did his job

Right decision to bring him on, wrong decision to play him there IMO. Should have moved Cleverley further forward for me or to the right and have him Carrick and Fellaini in a 3 and move Valencia forward to occupy Gibbs.
