Mesut Özil

Hah. Can't believe people are trying to consider today's performance to vindicate any disagreement they might feel regarding whether we'd have much use for him. You wouldn't think Ramsay or Giroud were having good seasons either based off this performance... Nor did Wilshere look anything like his extremely talented self when he came on.

I don't see anyone doing this. They're just pointing out the trend of Ozil often being completely anonymous in big games. It was exactly the same in their home game v Dortmund and it's happened plenty for club and country.

I do think he's a bit overrated. No-one's saying he wouldn't improve us but he cost a fortune and isn't significantly better than our current #10, so this idea that it's a travesty we passed him up is a bit silly IMO. Arsenal already have the problem of finding the right role for him in the team that keeps the side balanced. Cazorla's clearly less effective from a wide role but it's the only position left for him now. We already have that problem with Kagawa and Rooney so why add to it? Because he's this special player? Nah.

Excellent.

Is he referring to the number of successful passes he'll complete in the match?

Wait, since when is "not being significantly better than Wayne Rooney" a reason why someone isnt one of the best players in the world? Oh and Moyes was saying he wouldnt improve us when he said we dont need him, we have Rooney and Kagawa. Although perhaps those comments fired both players up and added to their performances today

Is that aimed at me? I don't think I said that.

Saying you don't need something is not the same as saying it wouldn't be an improvement. Obviously.

Why the feck is he posing like a twat?

Yes, just look at all the outrage those quotes in the sun led to on here. Thank god we have the Arsenal fans on here to keep a lid on this overreaction to that terrible misquote.

Let's not get sensible around here.

He was excellent in that league-deciding (to some degree) Clasico at the Nou Camp in 2012, sliding a great pass through to Ronaldo to decide the match. He's not a regular choker by any means. Game passed him by today though.

Manchester United (last season, too), Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, Bayern Munich to name a few... He's had some very poor games against "big" clubs. His best games against Barcelona both arrived in 2012 - he destroyed Abidal in the CdR (away) and was very good in the deciding fixture, but other than that, he's still yet to find consistency in big games.

He's the rare type of player who can produce a chance out of nothing, but when things aren't not going well, he becomes unreliable. Today even Rooney and RVP were reduced to scrappers in midfield, Ozil didn't nothing of that sort to help his team.

Has about as much workrate as Berbatov. Didn't see him closing down anyone or trying to win the ball back.

Ozil was pretty dire, true.

I don't think it's fair to focus on just him though, when Cazorla was equally horrendous.

Good point. In fact I actually forgot he played today until your post.

Does he normally operate that wide on the right or is it just because he didn't get a sniff of the ball today?

Completely anonymous and underwhelming today, he just doesn't have it in I'm to really take a big game by the scruff of the neck.

We still have the best number ten in the league IMO.

I agree, he is overated, particularly on here.

It's always the same with Ozil

For example he plays 5 games
1xWorld-class game
1xVery good game
3xPoor games

Ha, bit of an exaggeration. You don't get the number of assists he does playing badly for three games out of every five.

He was poor against us but so were most of his team mates. If we judged Ramsey, Cazorla and Wilshere on that game we'd come away thinking Jones is a better midfielder than all of them, when in reality all four would walk into our midfield.

Ozil can disappear totally in certain games and even for large periods of games where people say he plays well. You have to live with that and trust that his quality will show through the season. Fact is, despite his occasional disappearing act, he's still one of the best players in the PL.

It is possible though isn't it ? That's what makes him a great player, he could be completely invisible for a match and still deliver an assist.
