FIFA Ballon d’Or 2013

Good to see Ronaldo win it, nice to see a change to messi every year.

Walter de Gregorio, the director of communications of FIFA said that the standings of the three players was the same even before they decided to extend the voting period. Meaning that Ronaldo would have still won it if the WC playoffs weren't taken into account. I don't know if what he said is 100% legit.

I don't believe that personally. The story was that many coaches and players had not voted at that time. If that is true then I think Ribery would have been leading since he seems to have got a lot of media votes.

How does the voting work anyway ? Once you have all the captain/national team percentages, how do you use the media votes in order to have the final results ?

Media votes are just the same, one journalist from each country, just like the one nationalteam captain and the one nationalteam manager from each country. In the end you add everything and there you go.

Really shows how much of a non-team player Ronaldo is. It's a great honour for sure, but that reaction...

A couple of odd facts from Marca.

The other Ballon D'Ors who didn't win anything with their teams in their award year were:
Stanley Matthews
Denis Law
Kevin Keegan
Gerd Muller
Luis Figo

The last Real Madrid player to have won the Ballon D'Or entirely as a Madrid player, rather than as someone who'd just moved to them, was:
Alfredo di Stefano - more than 50 years ago!

That's what I meant about him and Figo. I might be wrong, but I think the voting used to be in August and so they'd be voting for his Inter/Brazil performances. I know Madrid nipped in quick before reward day, but still, I don't think it counts as one of theirs. :D

Voting was always at the turn of the year

I don't think the voting was. The awards were announced in November/December - just picking a name at random then, Cristiano Ronaldo received his first one on 2/12/2008 - but I think the voting was earlier.

FIFA World Player always seemed more like a year on year thing, with the Ballon D'Or/European player based more around the seasons.

Didn't he play in Argentina before moving to Madrid?

Anyone else think Messi knew he wasn't going to win, hence the suit?

Yes, the award's changed a bit now. In the past it was more about the previous season, any summer tournament, with a nod to early-season form. Now it's effectively a calendar year vote with the extended voting period and proven by Ronaldo's win.

Shameful comments from Platini. He's supposed to represent all European football, not just France:

Ribery helped Bayern to an unprecedent treble of Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup, and UEFA president Michel Platini was stunned his compatriot missed out on the award.

Platini, who won the Ballon d'Or three times, said: "I am very disappointed for Franck. Next year we will return and it will be Messi-Ronaldo, in two years' time the same and three years' time ditto. I am disappointed because for 50 years the Ballon d'Or took into account results and trophies on the pitch. Here we are talking about the global value of players and that poses a problem."

Didn't he play in Argentina before moving to Madrid?

He did but he won Ballon d'Or as a Madrid player (don't think players from outside of the continent qualify for it).

Boring old cnut, why wasn't he complaining in 2010 when it should've been somebody from Inter to win it as well ? Sneijder or somebody.

He talked about 2010 too though he says that it should have been a Spanish player.

He's a cnut, no doubt, but he has a point. The Ballon d'Or award has always been more of a most valuable player award. If your team didn't surpass the expectations, you basically had no chance winning it, didn't matter what you did individually. When it merged, FIFA made sure that it became a huge show that awards the players who create the most youtube hits.

That's not meant as a dig at Ronaldo, he's been individually the best player in 2013, so he deserves this award. But he wouldn't have won it without the change after 2009, just like Messi wouldn't have won in 2010 for example.

How is Platini wrong in this instance, exactly? An individual award is stupid in a team sport anyway, but since FIFA has taken over the Ballon d'Or, it's just plain retarded. Platini's interview may have been prompted by disappointment for Ribéry (to be honest, I doubt it) but I think he's spot on.

Well, if he's so concerned about the commercialisation of his sport, perhaps he should speak out about the more pressing concerns supporters have.

What do you mean? So much innuendo is killing me Steve!
Platini, being in the position he is, shouldn't have said it, but he's 100% correct.
Why?

While he is spot on on what he said (as reflected by the results from media when Ribery had by far most votes) the fecker didn't said the same about Sneijder on 2010 who deserved at-least as much as Ribery now and wasn't even on top 3.

Well, for example, his near-silence on Monaco & PSG's activities, mate.
What activities? I think they've been behaving superbly! :D

Revan, he disagreed with the 2010 Ballon d'Or and said he thought a Spaniard should have won. Also, take into account this wasn't a calm interview sitting down, but an interview just after the result where the journalist was trying to get him say something negative, so I doubt it was all very calculated and an attempt to disrespect Sneijder or anything.
