Walter de Gregorio, the director of communications of FIFA said that the standings of the three players was the same even before they decided to extend the voting period. Meaning that Ronaldo would have still won it if the WC playoffs weren't taken into account. I don't know if what he said is 100% legit.
I don't believe that personally. The story was that many coaches and players had not voted at that time. If that is true then I think Ribery would have been leading since he seems to have got a lot of media votes.
Media votes are just the same, one journalist from each country, just like the one nationalteam captain and the one nationalteam manager from each country. In the end you add everything and there you go.How does the voting work anyway ? Once you have all the captain/national team percentages, how do you use the media votes in order to have the final results ?
That's what I meant about him and Figo. I might be wrong, but I think the voting used to be in August and so they'd be voting for his Inter/Brazil performances. I know Madrid nipped in quick before reward day, but still, I don't think it counts as one of theirs.![]()
Voting was always at the turn of the year
A couple of odd facts from Marca.
The last Real Madrid player to have won the Ballon D'Or entirely as a Madrid player, rather than as someone who'd just moved to them, was:
Alfredo de Stefano - more than 50 years ago!
Didn't he play in Argentina before moving to Madrid?
Anyone else think Messi knew he wasn't going to win, hence the suit?
Until 1952, but he won his two Ballon D'Or for his performances with Madrid in '57 and '59.
I don't think the voting was. The awards were announced in November/December - just picking a name at random then, Cristiano Ronaldo received his first one on 2/12/2008 - but I think the voting was earlier.
FIFA World Player always seemed more like a year on year thing, with the Ballon D'Or/European player based more around the seasons.
Ribery helped Bayern to an unprecedent treble of Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup, and UEFA president Michel Platini was stunned his compatriot missed out on the award.
Platini, who won the Ballon d'Or three times, said: "I am very disappointed for Franck. Next year we will return and it will be Messi-Ronaldo, in two years' time the same and three years' time ditto. I am disappointed because for 50 years the Ballon d'Or took into account results and trophies on the pitch. Here we are talking about the global value of players and that poses a problem."
Didn't he play in Argentina before moving to Madrid?
Shameful comments from Platini. He's supposed to represent all European football, not just France:
Boring old cnut, why wasn't he complaining in 2010 when it should've been somebody from Inter to win it as well ? Sneijder or somebody.
He talked about 2010 too though he says that it should have been a Spanish player.
What do you mean? So much innuendo is killing me Steve!Well, if he's so concerned about the commercialisation of his sport, perhaps he should speak out about the more pressing concerns supporters have.
Why?Platini, being in the position he is, shouldn't have said it, but he's 100% correct.
What do you mean?
Shameful comments from Platini. He's supposed to represent all European football, not just France:
What activities? I think they've been behaving superbly!Well, for example, his near-silence on Monaco & PSG's activities, mate.
