Copa Del Rey 2013-14

So tonight's (January) window shopping opportunity starts at 8pm Spain (7 UK), Villareal Vs Real Sociedad and it's the third time they've played this week. The Liga match ended 5-1 to Villareal but the Copa first leg was 0-0 so it's all to play for:

Juan Carlos; Pantic, Musacchio, Gabriel, Jokic; Bruno, Pina; Moi Gómez, Hernán Pérez, Jonathan Pereira; y Perbet.

Vs

Zubikarai; Carlos Martínez, Iñigo Martínez, Ansotegi, José Ángel; Elustondo, Javi Ros, Gaztañaga; Xabi Prieto, Chory Castro; y Seferovic.
Pardo and Griezmann are on the bench - hidden from prying scouts.

Tonight's other match (9pm UK) is Getafe V Barcelona, but as Barca are 4 goals up, it's not likely to be much of a contest.

What a solo goal from Messi, just skipped past 3 or 4 Getafe players and the keeper and smooth finish. His second on the night, 2-0.

Messi just scored a Getafesque goal against Getafe..again

No one scores such goals. Not Ronaldo , not anyone .

Almost added another great goal, but was denied by a top notch reflex save.. What a save that was!

Also completely created himself, great steal from the defender and then went past Lacen as if he wasn't there... Codina did great, but Messi really should've finished that.

No doubt about that. Was a better chance than a penalty.

Unreal acceleration after the nutmeg...

Messi just knows what defenders and keepers are going to do in their attempts to stop him, he sees their every movement and decision coming before they actually do it. His football brain and anticipation is extraordinary.

If Messi is going to be comparable to someone then, it is a person who does the original Rubiks cube in under 10 seconds. Whilst we are content to finish it once, he cannot only finish it, but does so with incredible speed and he thinks about 5 moves ahead. For someone who has had continuous muscular injuries (see Fernando Torres), he is still exceptionally quick.

Barca say Neymar is out for 3-4 weeks. Which means he may return in time to play City on the 18th Feb

The Copa quarter finals then. The first legs are next week. Times are Spain
Espanyol - R. Madrid Tues 21:00 (8pm UK)
R. Sociedad - Racing Wed 20:00
Levante - Barcelona Wed 22:00
Atlético - Athletic Thurs 21:00

Casillas, Arbeloa, Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Illarra, Modric, Di María, Ronaldo, Benzema, Bale.

Espanyol are playing their part in the game no doubt, though the likeliest next scorer is probably Arbeloa

Espanyol must be doing something right, 5th game in a row that Cristiano has failed to score against them in their stadium, in fact the only time was in his debut season. And I think Messi hasn't even scored against them at the Cornellà-El Prat since they moved there in '09.

Atléti v Athletic club just started. Koke is playing in a midfield 2 alongside Guilavogui (French international)

In tonight's shopping opportunity we have:

Atletico
Courtois, Juanfran, Alderweireld, Godín, Filipe Luis, Guilavogui, Koke, Cebolla, Adrián, Raúl García y Diego Costa
.
Vs
Athletic
Herrerín, Iraola, Gurpegui, Laporte, Balenziaga, Iturraspe, Mikel Rico, Ander Herrera, De Marcos, Ibai y Sola
.

What an amazing few minutes for Koke. Played a sublime cross there which Godin scored from, and a tasty through ball a few minutes earlier which Adrian should have scored from.

God, fell asleep during first half but things I've noticed:

-Herrera should've scored in ~10th minute imo, good lay off / low cross done by somebody and he blasts it over.
-Koke's really good at set pieces I feel, good corners / free kicks and great crossing technique
-Atletico Madrid play football that's smiliar to our style ( judging just from this match, pardon my ignorance if I'm talking shit ), a lot of flanks play and plenty of crossing too

There are some similarities, they do like to get the ball in the box through crosses and are quite strong from set pieces. Instead of wingers they use Arda and Koke as wide midfielders linking up with the overlapping full backs, who almost play as wing backs when they are in possession offering width. They however play a very high intense pressing game, even Barcelona struggle to play against them nowadays. Simeone has them well drilled and disciplined. They have the meanest defence in la liga (again).

Yea, that pressing was crazy at times I must admit, a lot of aggression in their approach too.

Alexis on point to score a Dirk Kuyt hat trick.

Barça have faced Levante 4 times now this season (twice in the league, twice in the cup) for an aggregate score of 17-3, and yet one of those includes a 1-1 draw that could theoretically cost them the league

The Real Madrid Vs Atletico Madrid semi-final will be played on Wednesday 6th. Return leg the week after.

Barcelona will find out who they are playing tonight. Incidentally, if you've seen the photos of an empty looking ground, the crowd last night at the Camp Nou was 25,551 - a combination of the (effectively) dead status of the tie and driving rain.

The Racing Santander - Real Sociedad match may not actually take place tonight.
Racing's players haven't been paid for months. Many Liga players are paid in two instalments - one at the end of the season, one in October (when the season ticket money is in), so some of them probably haven't been paid this season.

Racing has fallen from Liga 1 to 2B (two relegations in 2 years) and their owners are part of the problem. They stopped play for 5 minutes in the last game as a protest. This time they say they won't play - they spent the day with the Spanish version of the PFA getting advice on what sanctions the Spanish FA can take against them.

The players say it's in everyone's interests for the club to get promoted from Liga 2B, so they won't take industrial action there, however the Copa gives them the chance to make a stand.

Real Sociedad are 3-1 up after the first leg, so whether the match goes ahead or not the chances are that Real will be Barca's semi-final opponents.

Teams for tonight

Real: Casillas, Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Coentrão, Ronaldo, Benzema, Xabi Alonso, Arbeloa, Modric, Jesé y Di María.

Atleti: Courtois; Juanfran, Miranda, Godín, Insúa; Gabi, Koke; Arda, Diego Ribas, Raúl García y Diego Costa.

Bale has been a disaster with his injuries. The lad is just never fit. Jese deserves his place in this side at the moment anyway.
