Jesus it sure sounds like we are going to spend big in the summer. I am genuinely shocked at this and at Mata being our player now. Pinch me!

Can't wait for this summer, World Cup and possibly the most transfer muppiest window of all time!

Mata 8.

Because it's what we'll all be doing when we watch him play.

Number 8 aye? Has Wayne Rooney been offered final say on squad numbers as part of his deal as well?

For those at a nervous disposition, this is not a serious post

The translator is usless. Just let Mata translate himself, the man can do everything!

This interpreter sucks. Mata is going to be "Thats not what I fecking said".

Translater making him sound like a retard.

"Helicopter good. I like helicopter. Helicopter cool."

This translater is a joker

At least we know where the Mandela funeral "sign language" translator has ended up

Peculiar. I'm quite shocked.

Maybe we really are leaving number 7 for something insane.

Guessing whoever is in charge of his website knew that the domain would be one of the first things people would look at for clues on squad number so registered 7 as a red herring.

Maybe we are. I thought Januzaj would be getting #11 (and still might). Interesting times ahead.

So how about Anderson? What no. will he wear next season then?

8 suits him. It was the number I instinctively thought he should get when he signed, with Adnan feeling more like a future 7. I thought there'd be registering problems though since Anderson's not actually left. That's obviously curtains for him then.

It's like that time Fergie didn't mention Berbatov as one of our striking options whilst he was still actually here.

Yeah, that website feels like one big jape now.

I think Januzaj could get #11 as well.

The mystery of the vacant 7 continues.

It's not often you feel really proud & honoured to have signed someone. :)

We need players now. If we dont get Champs Lge football - we wont be able to attract the players we really want. We needed 2 CM's, a LB & CB & thats just for now, not to mention a clear-out of deadwood. Nani & Kagawa seem like perfect pawns. Still hold out hope for Vidal / Kroos / Pogba (or all three) & Shaw. A CB - thats the most unobvious one, but anyone highly rated should be shipped in. Should have bought Guaray in the summer... what a feck that was!

Nah he's a 7. He just feels like a 7. It's right. And I generally balk at the whole '7 mythology' shit.

Might be his gift over summer. I'm not sure why people balk at the mythology of the number 7, we have a proud tradition of extra special players wearing that jersey. It's all just a bit of fun and being superstitious footy sorts who knows the marginal boost the idea gives the player who wears it. For what it's worth, I think Januzaj would step into it nicely and not do a Valencia.

8's a boring number innit? Doesn't have the beauty of 7, the tenacity of 9, the girth of 10 or the legs of 11. Better than 5 and 6 though, I'll give it that. 4 wins hands down cause all it makes me imagine is Phil Jones' face.

I dunno. I've always associated 8 with a player who is equally tenacious as he is talented with the ball. Scholes and Rooney comes to mind. Nice number.

Well it's just a very modern, semi-designed mythology. It didn't actually start as a "thing" until Cantona left. Robson wasn't running around in the "Iconic No7 shirt" (At least I dont think - I was about 9 tbf) In fact Robbo was still here when Cantona came. Wearing 12 if I remember correctly. Then Beckham was basically wearing "Cantona's shirt" to most people. When he left and Ronaldo got it, that's when it properly started to become this mythology, and Best was retro-fitted to it. We did have a ridiculous uninterrupted string of truly great players wearing it from like, mid-80s to 2009 though. Which is definitely cool.

But yeah, Adnan just feels right to me. Being a young player too, which - if we just go with the mythology - Best, Beckham & Ronaldo brought to it.

I always think of 8 as Gazza's number. Mata fits that bill for me.

I was surprised when Rooney took it too frankly. Given the playing staff we had at the time it was logical but it doesn't feel like a forwards number. An 8, to me, is an orthodox centre midfielder. Maybe its because I remember Incey wearing it but, when I talk about a number 8, I mean a proper box-to-box midfielder. Mata doesn't feel like an 8. 7,10,11 are more appropriate for a player who operates in advanced areas like he does and I figured, as 10 and 11 were taken, that 7 would be his.
