CONFIRMED MUFC XI:

de Gea

Smalling
Ferdinand
Vidic
Evra

Valencia
Carrick
Cleverley
Young

Rooney
van Persie

SUBS: Lindegaard, Buttner, Fellaini, Giggs, Kagawa, Hernandez, Welbeck.

So no Rafael, Fletcher or Januzaj from the travelling squad. Interesting.

I doubt you'd find too many who think we've lost the game Sults. Its the line up that's needlessly defensive. One of Valencia or Young was enough, we're playing Olympiakos for crying out loud. That's what the complains are about, not people giving up.
How is playing 4-4-2 defensive?

It's mental that we persist with one dimensional footballers who offer nothing, absolutely nothing, more than hit and hope crosses over an an intelligent footballer who can actually pass the ball well.

It hurts my brain when I try to make sense of it.

Even if you don't try to make sense of it it will hurt. If you just watch the game tonight and not think, it will still hurt. It has done so every other match I've seen, so why not. Whenever Kagawa has played and he has been substituted, we have gone from controlling the midfield to losing it. There is a gaping hole in front of Carrick and whoever else plays as CM because Rooney drops to deep, Valencia has more chalk on his boots than the line itself, and Young is just Young. We need kagawa. I think he would be amazing alongside Mata!

So why not replace him like for like, with kagawa? Young and Valencia are both shite and have been for the majority of the season. This has been a common selection for moyes when it comes to the big games, and it's sad that he hasn't learned yet.
Both have had better seasons than Kagawa.

Coaches have been no doubt watching our opponents since the draw. The line-up will be to counter their style or how Moyes thinks we'll win.

How many champions league knockouts has Smalling started in. Can't be many.

Biggest joke is that neither Valencia or Young are actually that good defensively. Young is lightweight and Valencia has made some ridiculous defensive decisions this season. No doubt once again Valencia will, at some stage, decide to stand still at the far post watching as an Olympiakos players creeps in to shoot as we have already seen many times this season...

This season has become a write-off - surely the best thing to do is to decide upon a style of play and then consistently go with a team and let them play it. Not totally changing our playing style / formation / personnel...

Moyes this season has reminded me of the Hunter S. Thompson quote:

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”

Right now it feels as though Moyes is on a journey towards his sacking with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body...

Guess we'll see. So far this season Moyes hasn't really come across as a man with a plan.

I don't know what the feck is he thinking too but it's not like Young or Valencia are 'defensive wingers'. The latter is just shit. Kagawa's running his ass off and tackles a lot so it would make sense to put him on the 'wing' if he wanted more security. Or Welbeck atleast.

Exactly. Kagawa is far from shit defensively - he may not be the best at tracking his man down the touchline, but he is very good at pressing their defenders high up the pitch, something our other players are quite rubbish at.

How many crosses are we going with tonight? I'm going to go for a nice round 70

Ok, so it's not the lineup you're complaining about, but the fact that Moyes picked it rather than Fergie.
No, I'm complaining about the inclusion of smalling at right back again (unless rafa is injured), then Valencia and young on the wings. Incredibly negative. When fergie was here he had us playing attacking football at least, and when he used to pick the two of them, it was because they were in form and to be honest we had nobody else. Now we have kagawa and januzaj but one doesn't like crossing as much apparently and the other is "too young", despite being our second best player this season. He's just so negative whenever it comes to a bigger game. I mean we're playing against olympiacos, not some big team. It's cowardly.

Sorry, Moyes is no winner. It has to be said now Sults. I respect you for keeping the faith, I've stopped believing.

Ask any fullback whether they prefer a winger ahead of them who will stay wide or cut in field and they will say the wide man.

This is about structure. Hodgonesque even.

United are one of only three teams still unbeaten in the Champions League this season, alongside Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. They are the only side however yet to have trailed in the competition this season.

Bloody hell....it's Olympiakos, not Bayern Munich. We'll be fine with Val and Young.

Guess we'll see. So far this season Moyes hasn't really come across as a man with a plan.

In fairness, we have looked prepared in the Champions League much more than than the EPL, particilarly the away games.

See how this goes. Not surprised Januzaj has not started.

Sigh, Moyes really is a big troll. How hard is it to play your best players? Evidently, very.

Still think we'll get a goal and draw/win though.

Now ask them if they'd prefer Antonio Valencia or David Silva in front of them. They'd say feck defending, lets have a chance of scoring a goal

Both have had better seasons than Kagawa.
Please. Both have had more chances but they've all been pretty equally shit and ineffective. Only difference being Valencia has more minutes then any outfield player after evra and young plays very often when fit as well. Give kagawa or nani the chances they've had and both of them would play better then they've shown simply because they are more talented players.

Bar Rafael and Evans that's the team that beat City 3-2, so I'm sure we can handle these.
Bar fellaini and v.p its the same team that got stuffed by city 4-1 12 months later

We'll still win this game comfortably, and it was obvious Kagawa wasn't going to start, if he was Moyes would have brought him on at the weekend to give him some game time considering he hasn't played for over a month, but it doesn't make it any less frustrating.

I wouldn't have minded one of Young or Valencia (there still would have been a mini Cafe meltdown though of course) but both of them is definitely....odd.

Anyway I hope they do well. I guess we'll be playing on the break mostly which is a fair enough tactic in such a game. Not a big fan of 2 strikers away in the CL so I think we will need Rooney to drop in very deep to help out the midfield.

Thing is you don't really have to defend by stopping opposition coming at you, being behind the ball and stuff but you can defend by controlling the game.

Kagawa's better at it than Valencia. I don't really even mind Young on one wing or Smalling ( who plays because probably Rafael is injured ), it's just Valencia I can't stand anymore.
