Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Yeah I guess the bullet time has been re-used quite extensively, but what I meant was that if that's its only influence, it's not much to write home about. But I probably say this cos I think it's a bit of a shit 'special effect'.

Bullet time was around before The Matrix. It was already being used in commercials. The Matrix was all about zeitgeist. It caught audiences on the cusp of the games and DVD revolution. It's the Dire Straits of movies. Nothing exceptional, just the right place at the right time.

Since you guys are film buffs, how good is The Birds?

I really enjoyed Rear Window, North By Northwest and Strangers On A Train. I am still not sure about Vertigo.

Should I get it on the blind assumption that being a Hitchcock movie it should be good?
It's got all the tension you would expect, just prepare yourself for some hilarious looking birds/camera effects.

I think that was Akira. Still though...
Ah right, got them mixed up. So you were getting all excited for Akira then, due to Efron yeah? Such a great actor, I like his song in High School Musical 2, there's something special about it.

It was, but Matrix was amongst the first to combine it with big action/bullets/wire-work etc.. and really caputre the imagination wtih it.

You're right though, it was all about zeitgeist - it caught the public at the right time, and fair play to it for that.

The Akira remake history is an absolute horror show, at one point they even considered 47 year old Keanu Reeves for Kaneda...

Can't be right, he's lost in space (albeit to some beautiful music, sure) and sacrificed himself for Cillian Murphy and the rest of the crew. Didn't even get to meet zombie Mark Strong.

the spectacular now - pleasant enough, but despite its good cast there was nothing to elevate it above other similar films. i probably preferred something like all the real girls, which was at least beautiful to look at.

my life in pink - (a young boy wants to be a girl & his family & community can’t deal with it) - it’s done in a light way making it an easy & entertaining watch, but it just peters out & ended up being a bit of a disappointment.

agony/rasputin - i struggle with historical epics, even ones with bearded ladies, live pigs being thrown through the air & what seemed like the most elaborate bird flip on film. the rasputin character’s mania just didn’t feel convincing/effective. otherwise it was really well put together - the story felt completely in sync with all the newsreel footage it was intercut with. the soundtrack's amazing.

little children - felt like a really bad, neutered attempt at a solondz film (it even had a jane adams appearance)!

Saw Jodorowsky's Dune last night. The story of the most influential sci-fi film never made. Alejandro Jodorowsky takes us through his vision of the film, based very loosely on Frank Herbert's epic novel. He also explains, through bizarre and entertaining anecdotes, how he managed to corral surely the oddest and most talented band of artists ever assembled - as well as his dislike for Douglas Trumbull. It is remarkable the impression that Jodorowsky's ideas and particularly Jean Giraud's (who surely deserves equal billing) images have left on films that were successfully made in it's wake (and with next to no credit given). What was most interesting for me though was realising how many of the ideas from their comic collaborations have their genesis in the Dune storyboards.

One other amusing oddity is seeing Nicolas Winding Refn pop up amongst the heavyweights of Orson Welles, Dali and Giger.

The Kings of Summer - very enjoyable movie about 3 friends who build a house in the woods to get away from their parents. A well written and funny feel-good movie. 8/10

I rather enjoyed that too. The film was also aided by the fact that Alison Brie is in it - and the main girl (who's also in True Detective) is also rather pleasing on the eye.

Watched Dr Strangelove for the third time with my mate last night and it's definitely right up there with my favourite films.

Akira (1988)

Finally got around to watching this on the train last week and absolutely loved it. The atmosphere, the setting and the action draw you in and keep you hooked right until it goes batshit crazy at the very end.

It scared the shit out of me as a child.

So apparently I am attending a screening of Fight Club tonight by the Jameson Cult Film Club which is "much more than just your typical screening as live theatre and special effects timed perfectly with on-screen action creates an electric atmosphere throughout. The secret venue is only revealed to ticket holders and will be completely transformed into a series of sets from the movie. Lucky ticket holders can expect to see an insomniac office worker; a devil-may-care soap maker and an underground fight club get the Jameson Cult Film Club treatment on the night."

I'll let you know if I find this insufferable or if I get drunk enough to get on board.

25th Hour - 8/10 watched it plenty of times and the ending is still one the best i have seen, underrated film in my opinion but thats probably because its a Spike Lee film and he is a divvy.

Your ratings are the best.

I was wondering what the 2008 film Martyrs is like - anyone seen it? If so, is it:

a) Awful & exploitive (as some claim). Or...
b) Intellectually stimulating (as others claim).

Cheers.

This was my review.

Martyrs

WOW that was a hard film to watch, the level of gore and brutally is something else.
The parts where the big guy is kicking the crap out of the women, are really hard to watch.
I agree with Rooney in Paris that the gore and brutality has a place in the film, it is an integral part of the plot and not just gore for the sake of it.

I did not enjoy the film, I dont think you can enjoy a film like this, you just watch it like I did in disbelief.
It is not a film I could or even want to watch again, but it is worth a watch, if you are a horror fan and like gore.

6.5/10

Answer a) in my opinion. Also, whether you like it or not, be careful cos it's really brutal.

Just back from Edge of Tomorrow, thought it was excellent, even Cruise didn't annoy me and quite amusing in places. Also you have to love a sweaty Blunt.
Agreed, thought it looked hilariously dumb in trailers but was pleasantly surprised. Hugely entertaining all the way through and very fresh and originally told. Action scenes very impressive. 8/10

There are people who thought that film was intellectually stimulating? That's very worrying. I get it, if someone, who mainly watches brutal horrorfilms, tries to find some sort of meaning in the ending of the film, but 'intellectually stimulating'? I wouldn't necessarily call the film awful, it does what it wants to do reasonably well. If you want to see a more serious attempt of a torture porn flick, go for it.

Personally I hated every minute of the film. I watched it in a double feature with Eden Lake and I still don't understand why. Horrible experience :(

It's repulsive garbage. If you want a genuinely intelligent and honest French take on the theme of transcendence through suffering, avoid this fraudulent muck and watch Bresson's Balthazar.

Although, to be fair, it's so bad that it does manage to make you wonder whether you're going to achieve transcendance through the suffering of watching it. But you don't.

Cant agree with that.

I thought Martyrs was a really good film but clearly not to everyone's tastes. It is intense, shocking, unsettling whilst also being intelligent and fulfilling. The viewer is pretty much asked to bear witness to sadistic spiritual cleansing and that's what is so great about it. It dares you to keep watching, which makes you question yourself at the end: "why did I sit through all that?". It is a film and you can stop it anytime you want but those who watch it through to the end leave with so many questions about ethics, morality and and boundaries, not just in the film but within themselves.

Just what I did, I sat though it and at the end asked myself why, horrific film.

Thanks very much all. :)

Tbh, I was most interested in what the victim saw (if anything) of the supposed afterlife. Then again, it's only acting (and not factual information), so I might as well read spoilers as watch the film. Cheers.
