Still can not believe it, this man is our manager . Can someone change my username to Van Baal please :(?

I think Fergie contemplated something similar in 2005 in the FA Cup final v Arsenal. Carroll was in goal and I distinctly remember the commentator mention something about movement on the Utd bench from Howard (had been a decent pen saver for us). Carroll stayed on and Arsenal scored 5...

I'm surprised more managers don't do it as it is a specialty.
You look a dick if it goes wrong. You need balls first and foremost. But at the same time, regardless you wouldn't take DDG off for example. It worked in this case, was preplanned given how hard it is to score against them. Adds to psychology too. Amazing.

Yup, I remember screaming my head off for us to put Howard in since we all knew he was great at penalties. Still boggles my mind to this day why they didn't.

I love it that he is a bit of a maverick who doesn't give a feck. Just the fact that he can change tactics effectively within a match and make fecking bold calls is enough to have me salivating over next season after the dirge of the last one.

Football players are pawns to him, not multimillionaire cuntbags that they really are. That's his biggest strength imo.

He stole that goalie tactic from one of the Mighty Ducks films.

I think Fergie tried to, Howard was all kitted out, just wasn't able to make the substitution before the final whistle went.

Our Aloysius is wonderful. I am more excited for the new season then ever. Trophies or no trophies, it will be fun and a hell of a ride.

Ah.. gutted! A bit silly they would leave it so late, oh well it is 9 years ago I suppose!

Awesome game and great tactical game by van Gaal. Glad we got him. :)

In reality it wasn't though was it? They hadn't learned anything from the Mexico game. You can't counter attack a team that is happy to defend deep and doesn't get drawn out by possession at the back.

Krul did well even if he is a bit of a cnut.

Moyes instead of bitching on United and talking shit could just go on this tournament and learn something from the Man.

It was. You have a habit of making terrible posts.

But Costa Rica are a very good team and were quite lucky. Look at what happened when the other big teams played them.

If I was a current United player cruising along comfortably, I'd be shitting myself. Van Gaal is going to shake this club up. No more favourites, no more first names on the team sheet. He could really get the best out of the likes of Jones and Wellbeck. Who wouldn't want to play for him?

My fear of him and Rooney clashing remains. Their first meeting could set the tone for the rest of the season.

To be fair, van Gaal almost didn't make it either, had there not been a penalty then Krul most definitely wouldn't have been subbed as time was called right after he came on.

That's why they kept possession and played it back then with a quick reverse pass. Worked quite a lot. I thought they were unlucky not to score in any case against a very organised unit and a god like keeper on form. The worse case really for them was it going to pens, which they seemingly had covered.

Didn't even celebrate after the win, like its normal and expected and wondering why everyone around was so ecstatic.

Would have looked a bit twatty then lol!!

The ball went out after he was meant to come on and the Dutch took it quickly, the thought did cross my mind too lol
But then it went out like 30 seconds later

Valencia is sturdy. He's not a star but a squad doesn't have to be and in many ways shouldn't be made up of superstars.

I agree, but these guys have been infesting our starting 11. The thing is, Valencia has not been a squad player, but a week in week out player for very little return. And his is last 3 years have been underwhelming to say least

The vibe among the fans has been so positive since his announcement and I guess the general feeling around the club has been really good with the new signings as well. Complete contrast to last year when fans were frustrated with lack of transfers and an unproven manager.

Almost everyone is warming upto Van Gaal and excited about the next season.

I didn't get the criticism for the call at the time really, he knows the goalkeepers better than anyone else does so i'm sure he had his reasons for doing it. Great call by him and shows he has balls of steel.

Absolute genius, cant wait for the season to start.

I dont think krul was guessing. He jumped to the correct sides every time cause he was waiting and trying to read the ball, using his height advantage.

Great decision by LVG, the guts this man has...

Also those that have been criticizing over in Holland for playing 5 defenders now know why. They were dodgy as feck at the back when he switched to a back four. Costa Rica's only good chance came when they switched to a back 4.

The guy knows what he's doing.
