Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

Limited Costa Rica to one shot on target which was comfortably saved. van Persie should've scored and Sneijder was very close, and yet there are so many who want to downplay his potential tactical nous because he didn't beat lowly Costa Rica over 90 mins.

NO ONE HAS THIS WORLD CUP!

If they can minimise the Messi threat and have Robben run around Argentina's average back line, they'll go through. It's all very promising for Holland though, they've gone through everything other than defeat in this years tournament. Luck, dominance, insane goals, dives, injuries, questionable (but ultimately brilliant) calls from the manager. It's been good to watch.

Anticipating this season with so much more optimism than last year.
I feel like a guy who drove a Jag for years, who was forced to use a KIA courtesy car for far too long, and who just got the news my Merc 500 will be delivered on Monday.

He should have brought on Huntelaar earlier tbh maybe even ahead of Lens.

Or taken off RVP for Huntelaar again as 2nd sub.

But his risk taking ability is such a refreshing change from Moyes.

There was always a feeling it could go to penalties, and subbing off RVP would have meant taking off 1 of your best penalty takers. The way the game was going, it felt like it was going to be decided by penalties, I think that's the reason RVP was left on even when he brought on Klaas.

such a brilliant risk taker he is van gaal.

i hope he can stop argentina now. the prospect of going to live my whole life hearing messi as the best ever is not something i'm looking forward to.

After hearing his post-match interview, I think he's a far brilliant planner than given credit for. The Krul sub wasn't a gamble. It was a veyr well calculated and planned risk.

The Costa Ricans wanted penalties from the first minute but they didn't expect at all what LvG had in store for them. They might well had been studying penalty videos of the wrong keeper all week.

you're right mate. he plans and he is not afraid of using it, no matter what the risk is at stake. i was struggling for a word so i did went for risk taker rather than brilliant planner. but yeah he is a brilliant planner isn't he?

just cannot wait for him to get started at united.

I'd expect them to create many chances based on the attacking talent they have, any of their attackers is prob worth more than the Costa Rica squad.

My point is the Dutch didn't play to the strengths of their forwards, they played to hide the weaknesses of their defenders. This was a valid tactic against teams like Portugal and Chile who could hurt them but Costa Rica were set out for the draw from the off.

But that was the right tactic. The Ned went for 4-4-2 at extra time, and their CBs almost couldn't cope with a few attack by CR.

Mission accomplished

Ahead of the game he was at pains to suggest that the Dutch should not be regarded as serious contenders for the World Cup.

"According to the FIFA rankings we are eighth or tenth... it doesn't matter which, but we are not one of the favourites," he said.

"I view Brazil and Argentina and, from Europe, Spain and Germany as the favourites.

"We consider ourselves as outsiders. I arrived as coach (after the Euro) with certain targets: qualify for the finals and then reach the semi-finals.

I can see why he brought Lens on instead of Huntelaar.CR were almost impossible to break down from the middle.Even Robben struggled through the middle.Lens played wide left, something Huntellar can't

Why would penalty takers study keepers?

It would work the other way. Keepers study penalty takers and go the way they generally go.

If they looked at videos of Cilessen, they'd have just seen him going the way his stats team prepared.

Shooters might still study a keeper to see whether he's better diving to his right or left, whether to go high or low etc. Agreed the keeper probably does more research (and it would be more effective) but that's not to say there's no value whatsoever in studying a keeper's tendencies.

He has seriously over achieved with a very average dutch squad. Imagine moyes with this squad. Its only his tactics and collective strength of the team that it has reached semi finals. I think it ends against argentina though, But he has had a very good world cup and any doubts about his ability should be killed.

The Dutch NT have had problems at previous competitions with internal bickering and players being outspoken. LVG has put a stop to all that the man commands respect and some people at OT will be in for a surprise.

Let the revolution commence Orange is the new Red.

While there's some value in studying penalty takers; It come down to more factors than that. The bottle shown by those who score is immense. We've seen star players miss in shootouts while some average ones hold their nerve

He's either a very lucky man or fecking genius. Good news for us either way!

Like @Bebe said, keeper have strengths and weeknesses including in penalty shootouts.

Cilessen is more agile and would get down quicker and further than Krul. But Cilessen jumps a bit early most of the time. Krul waits a bit longer cause he has longer reach so it is not a good idea trying to deceive him. It should be high and hard without trying to sidestep and confuse with Krul. The Costa Ricans would probably had been practising to shoot to Cilessen's left (I think he's a right hander). But they probably didn't know that Krul have a very strong left hand and testing Krul to his left isn't such a good idea on average.

Anyway, the keeper change had caught the Costa Ricans by surprise and that is a great psychological advantage already even before the shootout began.

The GK swap was obv pre-arranged and LVG must have gotten the players to buy into the (principally psychological) advantages of doing it. That's decent managing isn't it? Also, it worked, so even better.

LVG's nutcase/lucky/genius already seems better than DM's miserable/deadly dull/endless crosses approach and LVG hasn't got here yet.

The risk of taking RvP off was too high. LvG had kind of prepared the game to go to penalty (the way CR played). They need RvP there to keep morale and confidence high in Penalty shootout

"Even Louis Van Gaal would struggle with this squad"

Massive, huge big balls on him doesn't he?

SAF underpants will finally be properly filled.

Are SEF thinking about a new banner for next season? They've been retweeting mockups for a new banner recently.

I hope they did learn from their last mistake.

van Gaal will be like Edwin all over again, we will be sad that he didn't join us earlier when he retires. :(

I'm already sad that he'll be here for a maximum of 3 to 4 seasons. These 3,4 seasons will go by quickly.

The negativity from the BBC commentary and pundit team really annoyed me, they seemed almost desperate for LVG to be wrong about the keeper swap - "its an insult to their number 1", "hes made unnecessary pressure for Krul". Ignoring the psychological effect it would have on the CR penalty takers, surely they mustve been thinking shit they're bringing on a specialist penalty stopper. It was a great move.

Stroke of genius from Van Gaal regarding the sub keeper thing.

Think about it, you've just played 120 minutes against a goal keeper who you're familiar with, then on comes another goal keeper who is bigger than the one you've been facing the whole match and you know he's fresh. It would be completely unsettling for anyone taking a penalty, causing self doubt. Penalties are all about the psychology of holding your nerve and Van Gaal nailed it.

If they do, just have "Welcome Louis" and have it for the opening game. No need for romanticized bollocks like "Heaven sent us" or "The Chosen One". Keep it fecking simple. For me that banner is befitting someone who has won everything with us, which Van Gaal hasn't yet.

They only had 1 or 2 shots on target in 120 mins, I doubt Cillessen was in anyway tired or that the Costa Rica players were familiar with him. We're falling over ourselves to praise the Dutch for obvious reasons but when it got to the shootout it was a 50/50, Costa Rica knew penalties were their best chance from the start and the Dutch let it happen.

That banner seems Rawkish. Make us dream. We go again. Ugh. Please no.

He's done fantastic with what is an extremely average team. Except for rvp and robben they are pretty poor.

Not sure if been mentioned already but I thought the keeper sub had two main reasons, apart from the fact that krul may actually just be a better keeper at penalties.

It was mind games to the CR penalty takers by saying that this keeper must be some kind of penalty saving machine but to do something so unusual also made the result of the penalty shot out almost completely down to LVG win or lose, relieving pressure from the dutch penalty takers. Don't think it's a surprise they all scored

To be fair to Costa Rica, I don't think they were psyched-out as such. The first saved penalty was maybe too close to the keeper, but the second was an exceptional save. Both were at least on target, and well struck. Krul just did really well, going the right way for every penalty.

Krul's apparently only saved 2/20 penalties for Newcastle, Van Gaal might really be a genius.
