Arturo Vidal

If there is any basis for the latest rumour, (I doubt there is), it could just be United giving Juve the "hurry-up"

I think so. It's the first think that you could say with some confidence that we've leaked. A wide-range of media sources picking up on the story at the same time would suggest there has been a leak or a hint dropped along the way. All this from a deal we were very tight-lipped on before with all stories coming from Italy. You don't play hardball unless you think you can.

If Vidal doesn't work out, we could go for whom Juve are reportedly interested in replacing Vidal with: Romulo from Verona. They've just bought all of his rights from Fiorentina.

Assuming we do get him, and this is all hypothetical, but where would we actually put him? Now, I'm not trying to start the whole "Oh we never needed him anyway, he wouldn't fit" rubbish for if we don't sign him as damage control, but I'm just finding it hard to imagine our midfield with Vidal, Herrera and Mata in it. Herrera and Mata are typically attacking players, Herrera can track back but it's not his specialty and while Vidal is box-to-box, he's nothing close to a holding midfielder. Our hole will be gaping, for a lack of better terms.

I know I'm missing something, but I can't figure out what that is.

He'd play at RB when Rafa was injured, obviously. That's sort of our thing.

Both are box-box. and are capable tacklers, with good engines. Dedicated DMs and AMs are, unless absolutely WC in that role, too limited to effectively be box-box.
There is no disgrace in that. If David Silva could cover like Mascherano, he'd be an £80m player.
A box-box will seldom be as good in all areas as a dedicated AM/DM are in their's, but the flexibility is good compromise and less restrictive.
Vidal is one of the best and Herrera could become one. So, a muppet's dream. Me included.

Be no worry if like LVG has done before, we play with 3 defenders and the wing backs further forward. With the extra man for cover in defence, Vidal and Herrera can be left to do their thing. I'm pretty much set that i want this as our formation with another quality CB brought in. Allows us to use Vidal and Herrera in the middle while also fitting Mata, Rooney and RVP in the one formation in their preferred positions. Keeps us tight at the back too.

He can defend and sit back if needed, that's the beauty of his game he's a geuine all rounder, he can defend as well as he can attack. If we do get him i think LVG will play a 3 man midfield Carrick/Vidal/Herrera.

If you wanted to throw them all in there and keep some semblance of balance, maybe:

------------Carrick---------
Rooney--Ander--Vidal---Mata

But even that would offer almost no protection for the fullbacks (not that Bayern Munich care about that sort of thing, mind).

The best and most obvious answer would be rotation.

Herrera has also shown himself to be excellent in a more sitting role, dictating from deeper and only occasionally bursting forwards. Vidal may often play high up the pitch but he does as much defending as most specialised DMs - the Juve model is to have your regista, who is ultimately a creative player, sitting behind two workhorses like Vidal or Marchisio, but it's still the latter who do the defending, not really the likes of Pogba or Pirlo in the deeper role.

Both Herrera and Vidal get through a massive amount of work and lots of defending. Either of them would be more defensively solid than any of our midfielders managed to be last season. They'd be just fine as a midfield two.

"I'm already at a great team, Juventus, so I will be just as calm if the Manchester United option falls through."

That's surely a really promising quote?

Apparently that's misleading and has had the last bit added on. Apparently it was just "I'm already at a great team, Juventus." Or something like that.

On a side note, it's amazing how we've managed to full 163 pages with bullshit articles and tweets, and complete muppetry. Only at the caf

It's promising in that it indicates he's interested in playing for United. Although that's been apparent for a little while now.

The unresolved issues is whether or not Juve are willing to sell him. That's something which seems to be completely unknown right now.

That's surely a really promising quote?

IIRC after watching Chilevision in the night we figured out that he hadn't actually said the last line but it is something they have put in implied.

What he had said was "I'm already at a great team, Juventus, so i am calm" when someone shouted about a move to United.

Anyway, it's somewhat promising.

Mccarthy simply won't be worth what Everton would want for him now. He's a good player though , and maybe we should have thought about him more last summer.

These poor sports 'writers', they have to write about Vidal every day and they have absolutely nothing to report.
It sells papers or gets people to click on their site which makes them more money in advertising. Every single day you can expect to see something "new" on Vidal.

Why does everyone keep insisting that we'll play 5 at the back just because van Gaal was forced to do it with the Dutch a couple of times? It's completely inappropriate for our players. Our fullbacks are both excellent attacking fullbacks, not wingbacks. They thrive on defending and are good going forwards, but neither could be wingers, which is essentially what you want from a wingback. Shaw, in particular, is superb defensively but still developing his attacking game.

Personally, I think Vidal and Herrera would do fine as a midfield two. But if you don't agree, then just put Carrick behind them. That would work far better than just throwing an extra CB in and hoping that makes us more defensively solid. Having three CBs won't give Herrera and Vidal license to go forwards - that would leave a massive gap between the midfield and the back line, which would be disastrous. You're essentially hoping that one of the CBs moves into the space and plays as a DM, in which case you might as well just play Carrick and not bother with pushing everyone out of position.

“On my future, I want to return to Italy and then we will see what happens,” Vidal has begun in conversation today with Fox Sports.

“I really do not know anything about what is going on. I’m not reading the papers, I am very calm, and I’m doing everything possible to recover from a knee injury.

“Things are going well and I am happy at Juventus.

“I’m concerned about doing things with the people that I love, everything else is being dealt with by my agent.

“It would be wrong to talk about another team, I just know that [United] are one of the biggest clubs in the world, but I still have a contract with Juventus.

“It would be disrespectful to talk about another team in front of Juventus and my teammates.”

Vidal raced back to the field this summer in time for Chile’s World Cup campaign, despite undergoing knee surgery on a meniscus injury in May.

“The knee is okay, I’m not doing anything. I am resting, taking advantage of the holiday break.

“I have tried to let it be because the last two months have been very intense.

Vidal and his Chile teammates were eliminated in the Round of 16 at this summer’s World Cup by hosts Brazil.

“I think we will be much better for the upcoming Copa America. We will play in our country, with our people, it will be a wonderful tournament.

“Hopefully we will do well, we have time to accomplish something important.”

.................

Seems Vidal gave another interview to Fox Sports Chile which was missed on here. Saw someone mentioning on twitter earlier too.

Wow, great argument there, you sure told me.

I didn't think your blatant misinterpretation of his point merited an answer. But since you ask... his point was that missing out on Vidal and ending up with someone like McCarthy would be deeply disappointing. You thinking that McCarthy is a great prospect isn't really relevant - the point is that he's a massively inferior player. If we missed out on Ronaldo but managed to buy Depay disappointment would be the appropriate response.

He's back on the 28th right? Bah.

This thread is like a parody now. Right down to the "how would he line up alongside Herrera" (effectively the new - can he play in a midfield 2?) which gets asked.... every... other... page.

Just read the last 20 odd pages. Definitely part of this roller coaster ride now. Sign him!

Muppetry it might be, but that's not the comment of a man looking to quash rumours.
