We need top class. Blind would make a decent signing when we clear the deadwood but not while we're still filled with it. And as a midfielder his looked bang average every time.
What do you mean every time? He only played there once at the WC and by all accounts it's the position he's played all season and impressed in for his club.

When I watched Ajax granted it wasn't every match he didn't impress and at 18M I'd pass.

De Jong doesn't exactly fit that bill does he? His an average footballer.

Its not about X or Y player, its about the system as a whole. If a particular player fits into Van Gaal's system, then we shouldn't care how glamorous or unglamorous their name is in transfer muppet circles.

His a decent defensive midfielder that's it. I'm sure there are plenty of CDM's who fit the system and ones much better than De Jong.

Name a better one that we could sign in your opinion?

If what Mitten says is true then it's not a case of naming a better player than Vidal, rather a player who fits a different role. He might view Herrera and Mata as our two midfielders with an out and out holder behind them. Therefore, after spending 30m on Herrera we're not gonna spend another 50m on a player van Gaal sees as playing the same role.

Who knows though, I'm just guessing. I'd love Vidal here but I trust LvG knows what he's doing.

Do you think the manager doesn't know this ?

You make it sound like this system is revolutionary, it's not, it's just a football formation and De Jong is just a DM, there are lots of better DM's than him that can fit into the simple formation we are using.

Its probably less simplistic than that. It also goes into a trust factor, having experience with a player in the past, how they fit into the system, their skill level, their work rate in training, their personality in the dressing room et al. Managers have far greater insight than fans do in that regard.

But what about individual quality? Having players that suit the system is good but not when up against the very best.

As each day passes it really does seem we won't sign anyone until we return from pre season.

I'm not arguing in favor of signing him right now. Just saying that the criteria for selecting a player is far more multi faceted than watching a couple of matches, reading a few tabloids and tweets about a players hype level etc

Just had a quick look and can't see this Mitten video, the last one was an hour ago and doesn't mention anything. Anyway doesn't surprise me the day after he said we were close to a deal he completely backtracked.

Be nice if instead of telling us who we aren't targeting Howard could tell us who we are after for once.
Simple fact is, he has absolutely no idea who we're after, neither have all the other journalists. I think we've learnt from last season, no more talking to the press

Do you think Van Gaal is not qualified to assess individual quality as it relates to what he's attempting to do with the squad ?

I am ok with what LVG feels right and buying players keeping the system in mind. But I am not buying that we let go of players like Kroos and Vidal just because of that. There could be a lot more reasonable explanation than that, it could be the fee, the knee or the player changing his mind as well.

Well judging by our midfield and with Carrick out leaving only Fletcher and Fellaini for the holding role he should surely be able see we need better than De Jong.

You were initially saying that as regards Vidal which is untrue, many of us here have been watching him for years so it's not YT vids and media hype and he clearly could fit into the system we used the other night, bar the banter in this thread I don't even read football media because it's 99% made up shit. Selecting a DM should first and foremost be about the footballing qualities, not whether a manager was buddies with the guy at a previous club or as his national coach, no one would ever develop if that was part of the criteria, so despite van Gaal's obvious coaching nous I'd still feel there were behind the scenes issues if we had to settle for mediocrity like De Jong or Blind.

There's something odd about that Play-up article supposedly from Mitten, can't quite put my finger on it, but he seems to be having a few digs at LvG

I agree with your view.

The players (I think) we need now the system has been changed, are defensive players. We need a DM, at least 1 CB and perhaps 1 LB/RB (or someone who can play both).

We don't really need Vidal if you look at our squad. We've got plenty of options for the 2 attacking players in the midfield 3, it's the deep midfielder we need, which Vidal isn't (although I used to love putting in as DM in FIFA haha).

Didn't read as if it was a Mitten article to me.

Suarez ban is basically about to be removed. I am sick of spanish clubs spending millions, riding fifas back and getting no punishment. Along with all the money bullshit you can definitely tell Fifa are harder on english teams in the UCL with bad refs

So because "many of us have been watching him for years" it means we are suddenly more qualified to assess the needs of Van Gaal's squad than Van Gaal himself ? Sounds a bit suspect to me. Let the man make his own assessments based on what he wants to do. He probably knows a bit more about these things than random transfer muppets clamoring for feel good signings.

I'm still wondering why anyone holds Mitten up in any kind of esteem.

Pfffft so the day Chelsea sign yet another player we are still twirling our thumbs. Well done Woodward, well done.

No it means that many have a valid opinion on the matter as opposed to the dismissive sarcasm you were directing at people wanting "muppet flavour of the month" signings. If we are all just going to take the approach that everything that happens is a) the best choice because van Gaal apparently made it, and b) actually believe that the choice might not have been affected by the refusal to pay over a certain price despite the dick measuring Woodward keeps doing, then why even bother with a message board to discuss transfers?

Completely ridiculous, if true. Our midfield is a shambles, we can't be saying "Thanks but no thanks" to players like Kroos and Vidal if we had/have a chance of signing them.
Given that Kroos went to Real, we obviously had no chance there. Who knows what's happening with Vidal.

You have to admire their transfer department/negotiation team, they do splendid work... Costa, Cesc and Luis... done.

Oh god i can only imagine this place if we don't sign atleast one top class player, especially after the bleating from Woodard.
I'll be honest, i'm quite suspicious of us when we are linked to the real top level players but i honestly thought we would get 1 of either Vidal or Di Maria.

At this rate, the next player LVG will turn down is probably Ronaldo.

Its not dismissive sarcasm, its a valid point. Its setting a precedent among fans to question Van Gaal's transfer policy when he hasn't even managed a competitive match yet. He's said time and time again he's assessing the squad and wants to give the current players a chance, and also that he's building a philosophy (system) to see which of the current players fit into it.

Its like spoiled kids having a strop they didn't get their shiny new toy at Christmas.
