What exactly does our dear trainer-coach mean when he says that the wingbacks are "the specialists" in the 3-5-2 formation and subsequently that the wingers are the specialists in a 4-3-3? That they are the key positions?

I suspect that when he says he'd have to buy "another type of player" in reference to allowing us to play 4-3-3 he's talking about a wideplayer who scores often with our wideplayers lacking in that area for a while.

It's interesting but that's a couple times now where I've heard LVG mention that SAF played in a 4-3-3 formation. While that may have been the case for certain matches in Europe, we've predominately been playing in a 4-4-2 formation under SAF as well as Moyes. Am I missing something here?

After Ronaldo it was more of a 4-4-1-1 but when we had him, the shape was always a 4-3-3.

For Van Gaal 4-3-3 equal 4-2-3-1 and vice versa.

I think we shouldn't be so bogged down by these comments. As long as he knows what he thinks is best for the current players he has and that his winning philosophy will work, that's what matters. I think in a way, he's paving the way to ensure he's not being blamed for failure in the future since he would say, players "were not able to execute my philosophy" etc.

In any event, I am hoping that his mere presence will bring back the fear factor at OT that had been lost in the last season.

Adore this man already, from the fatherly way he is with the players, to his obvious obsession with football, to the manic horsey way he smiles at his own jokes to the way he says "Menchesser Unaaated."

Young played well at wing back? I thought he was caught out positionally a few times. It doesn't look natural to him - as you'd predict.

I thought he did well tbh. He didn't make any real defensive mistakes.

Haha, and "Sir Alec", "Bayern Mansion"... And "I said it already, and I have to repeat myself?", "why did you ask?". Just brilliant!

His behavious so far shows his obsession yes, and also he comes across as genuine and not pretentious (SAF is the similar).

Bayern München is the correct way to pronounce it.:smirk:

Rooney played as a no. 10 for the last few seasons. So he's right.

SAF used 433 more often in Europe. commonly referred to as the 451 here on the caf.

He's Irish.
I know he plays for Ireland but I thought his parents were Scottish and he was also born in Glasgow.

James McCarthy (born 12 November 1990) is a professional footballer who plays for Everton and Republic of Ireland as a central midfielder. McCarthy made over 100 appearances for Hamilton Academical as a teenager, before being transferred to Wigan in 2009 for an initial £1.2 million. Although born, raised and schooled in Scotland to Scottish parents, McCarthy made his competitive debut for the Republic of Ireland on 26 March 2011 in a UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier against Macedonia.

It doesn't matter, if he declares for Ireland, he's Irish. There are a number of German internationals who do not have strong connections to Germany, but they are still considered German.

I loved hearing him talk about formations, how he chose it to go along with our strength in strikers and number 10s, etc. Certainly nice to have that flexibility and modern thinking.

Our old friend Raymond Verheijen is currently on Talksport shitting on his conditioning work for players. Listing out the injuries we currently have and the ones Netherlands had in the World Cup and the lead up.

He didn't like Moyes and he doesn't seem to like Van Gaal. Or maybe he just doesn't like United.

He does like attention though.

Really liked that interview. He commands respect, something Moyes failed miserably to do.

Or he just likes himself and criticising the current United manager is a sure way for him to get noticed. EDIT Dr Funk beat me to it.

Its a good interview. Love that he's never shy in blowing his own trumpet but then at the same time, making it sound so natural and coming across as boasting. The confidence he has in himself and the respect he shows the club are equally encouraging, i.e. he is a good fit for us.

If he's 10 years younger, he would have huge potential becoming another legendary manager (it's early days but he has this authoritative presence and to a lesser extent charisma that are speaking to us he will make us top again!) His reference to a broken team is very appropriate. A word that is neither criticising the players, nor belittling them. Well done boss.

The fact that the interview is reported verbatim is a smart move. We can see exactly how he was responding and not how the reporter thought he was saying. LvG is an articular person if he's speaking in own tongue.

UNITED PRESS OFFICER: Sorry, we’ve got to go…

LVG [getting up}: Interesting eh? Interesting. You’re all coaches now….

Jaysus, his English isn't great. Glad they reported it word for word, so you can see how often what he means to say might get misunderstood. Imagine he will express himself better as the season goes on. Which is great. Potentially way more interesting than the other PL managers in what he has to say about the game.
