Champions League 2014/15

Sporting will probably be the toughest tie, but its gone as well as we could imagine really.

This is so boring.. they should have a rule to not repeat last years match ups

Anyone else secretly find it hilarious how City keep getting groups of death?

Tough group for us as usual, Steuau last year and now Maribor. It's a fix!

Our trip to Nordsjelland (spelling?) the season before was the roughest. Worried we might draw the Vatican city next year :nervous:

fecking hell, I knew it...I knew we were gonna get an english side...feck me

That was awfully tough! Shame we had the minnows, Shaktar and Juve that year though.

Should breeze through our group, especially if Carvalho leaves Sporting.

Same draw as usual then, like clockwork. Barca/PSG, Chelsea/Schalke, Arsenal/Dortmund etc. Yawn, roll on the KO stage.

Hurry up and get on it Woodward! Giving them Nani and taking Carvalho off them is like a double blow!

I think it went as good as could be realistically expected for you lot. In fact, for all Portuguese teams, unless Jesus still has nightmares with AVB, Hulk and Falcao.

I see what you did there  I agree. Since we are not as Champions League experienced as Chelsea and Schalke, we can at the very minimum get EL qualification (no offense to Maribor). We will try to fight for second with Schalke though. Will only do one european away. London and that´s it.

Ronaldo to score a few against Liverpool and give it the big one infront of the kop :D

Schmeichel and Ronaldo  Both former United/Sporting players

Really hope Cristiano is especially fired up for the Liverpool game at Anfield. Hope he rifles one and tells the Scousers to be quiet while they're booing him.

Ronnie  Any of the players would be worthy winners in my opinion. Big fan of Neuer.

Why are people underestimating Basel?

Do you not learn your lessons? Knocked out Liverpool. Knocked us out. Did the double over Chelsea last year and knocked out Spurs in the Europa.

I hope Liverpool do go into that thinking easy 3 points.

They've sold Sommer, Salah and Stocker which should significantly weaken them. We should be beating them.

Just me or do they seriously need to get rid of the seeding system or change it or something.

fecking boring seeing the same groups every year/two years.

City have had either Bayern or Dortmund every season. They've also played CSKA (who always have an English club) in a year they had Bayern.

Arsenal seem to play Dortmund nearly every season

Ajax always have either Real or Barça in their group so they can never progress.

Chelsea seem to play Schalke more often than not

Benfica and Zenit seem to play each other every year and if not then Zenit get Porto instead at some point.

Basel always seem to play an English team as well.

fecking rubbish. Go back to the days when you could have Bayern, Barça and us in one group. All this does in ensures that the lower teams can never progress and the same big teams are always in the knockout rounds. Obviously it's all for money but it doesn't half dull the competition.

You are welcome Liverpool, we made your life easier by taking Di Maria from your future opponents.

Getting rid of the stupid TV pairings might help. Not that there's a chance they'd do that.

Can't say I agree. The design of the Champions League is to decide who is the best team in Europe, if a team is good enough it will make it's way to Pot One. Thr tournament gets more exciting as it progresses, I'd prefer to see a Real Madrid v Bayern Munich final to a Madrid v FC Basel wouldnt you?

No, I'd prefer more teams can get through and then become champions and therefore join the elite rather than maintain the exclusive and unfair status quo.

Plus, it means historically massive clubs like Ajax are forever stuck in third place and the Europa League despite being run very well and promoting youth so that the money clubs can try and win everything.

It's fecking boring every year and I want some variety. A Real-Bayern final would obviously be better than Real-Basel but eventually it'll get to a stage where it's a 50/50 chance for that to happen every year so you lose interest.

Bayern for the 3rd time in 4 years then (Madrid in the other), it's the toughest group but we should be getting through. The worry is how it then impacts our league form the following weekend.

Well since the same clubs usually keep qualifying for the CL group stages and with the rules prevent clubs from the same country to be in the same group, coupled with the way it is determined who is in each pot, well you are going to get lots of repeats.

The thing is even if you just draw everyone from the same pot so you have some groups of deaths and some groups of 4 weaker clubs so that two clubs that had no chance get into the knockout stage, well the reality will bite them sooner or later when they run into one of the big clubs and in reality have no chance of winning it all anyways.
