Post-match discussion

hat do people want? I can't understand negativity in the Caf after a match like this. They should try being Liverpool or Chelsea fans tonight.

I do get your point that after a good win vs your rivals you should praise the team. But to be fair those who are negative get slated either way. If you can't pick out negatives after a win and after a defeat you are just overreacting then when can you be critical? Fergie always took the opportunity when we had won despite not playing well rather than after a defeat.

From the sounds of it the performance today wasn't great. LVG preferred the first half when we scored zero and it seems we didn't look like scoring... So he will now be hammering in to the players that the second half wasn't controlled enough. How are the players meant to feel?

A good result, 3 goals and a debut goal for Martial. All ticks in the boxes. But a really good exciting performance? Not from what I've read on the web so no progress on that front?

I didn't see the game today though I've seen the goals... But from what I've read in general is was another boring game and average performance? We just happened to be better than a terrible Liverpool side?

I don't think that's a fair assessment. The first half was pretty sluggish, but Liverpool were really compact, and they didn't take any chances offensively. Hard to break them down. After the first goal it was a really good game. Much more intense, with higher tempo, more tackles and some decent attacking play, but not a lot of chances. Still fun!

But does this game raise more questions than it answers? Herrera must start? Martial to start? Rooney wasn't even missed? What is our best midfield pairing? And what's our best options in attack.

Herrera was good. He didn't create that much, but we worked really hard and forced some mistakes from the Liverpool defenders. Well done to get the penalty, and a brilliant penalty. I don't think he's worsened his chances of starting the next game :) Rooney definitely wasn't missed...I can't really imagine him doing much more than what Fellaini did today, which wasn't a lot. He was okay though, won some duels and tried to hold up the ball, but nothing special. Young was very good, while Mata was pretty poor.

As for our best options, it's not easy to say, really... Mata would most likely be out of the team next game if we had a decent back up, but with Valencia being the only option I suppose he will play in the near future. If Rooney is undroppable, I think we will see Young/Depay - Herrera - Mata behind Rooney.

So how did the young lad do? Other than his wonder goal of course. Did he run at people and look to try things? My god I just hope LVG doesn't beat that kind of play out of him like he seems to be doing with Memphis.

He did alright, but we weren't really attacking a lot when he came on so he didn't have much to work with. Had a good brawl with Lovren (which he won) and showed some neat passing and brilliant pace. He did try to make things happen, but with the cautious nature of the team it wasn't easy for him to do it all for himself. What I really enjoyed was that he looked eager to run in behind the defenders! When is the last time we've seen our strikers do that? With the passing quality in midfield, I can easily see him having that wonderful ability to beat the oppositions offside trap! All in all a very good debut, but still some question marks about how much he can do for us this season.

  • Thank feck for that.

  • For all the criticism, have to credit LvG for the substitution.

  • The reason Schneiderlin didn't start is that we didn't need him to get the ball off the Liverpool players, they did that for us.

  • Fellaini can't play up top without winger(s) feeding him crosses. Didn't happen.

  • As good as our defence has been, we need to push to kill the game. We sat on 1-0 and 2-0 and invited pressure.

  • Ashley Young is a fantastic attacking decision maker.

  • Delighted for Herrera and Blind.

  • I. Love. Darmian. He just gets it.

  • MARTIAL!!*

I watched the game on TV. United were excellent. Played with composure (except for one amazing moment when Dave passed the ball out to a Liverpool forward!). De Gea - 7 and a half. Darmian. 8. Smalling 9. Blind - 9; He was deservedly MOTM. Luke Shaw was superb too, especially in the first half 8 and a bit. Carrick and Bastian were stunning 8 point fives. Mata played well seven and a half, as did Herrera, 8.5. Memphis did not do an awful lot but Felli won an awful lot of important challenges and occupied and flustered them ... 8. Young was excellent when he came on as was Schneiderlin, two 8.5's for sure and Anthony deserves a 9 for his goal. The first half laid the ground work for the second, Liverpool tried to press and ran themselves ragged. The goal was well-worked after good work by Young. All that negative stuff about LVG preferred the first half is utter rubbish. I cannot describe how rubbish it is. We just beat Liverpool. Celebrate. Try and get to see the match. Enjoy. Eat, drink be merry. Any so-called United supporter not made happy by thumping the scouse, scoring excellent goals in the process and dominating the match, can only be - in my respectful opinion - one moaning, clickbait, attention-seeking, miserable wretch. Love to all.

3 points and Martial canceling out Benteke's bicycle kick. I'm pretty satisfied to say the least. Loving it.

Just saw Rodger's post match interview..
He is nearly done at Liverpool.. had nothing to say so started implying United cheated to get the freekick and the pen... hoping to get some fans to talk about that and not him

Post match LvG: "Liverpool is a fantastic club. Everytime I play them, I win".

Great game , relaxed at 2-0 , at bit tense Benteke screamer , went nuts when Martial finished it . Great to beat the scousers and in a funny way better after they had a bit of hope with their goal . LVG Red Army .

So you didn't even bother watching the match but write a massive post speculating about the fallout? Er, ok.

Schweinsteiger's pressing was sensational today. I thought his legs had gone?

Oh, and apparantly Blind isn't a centre half?

And, how much did we waste on Martial?

Martial did what we expected Depay to do. I expect Depay to be moved to the bench.

Schweinsteiger is just pure class and makes us tick, Carrick has the ability to do the killer pass but kept slowing the game down.

Shaw starting to get caught out when the front guys screw up, but he has really stepped up. I like that he is always looking to attack inside when things open up. Darmian is solid.

Fellani needs more games very rusty.

Overall piss poor tactics from Liverpool, who would think they would come to OT and not play to win.

It is clear LVG has a plan for each game, they practice it during the week, hence the free kick, so I can not understand why the team play so slow at times. Most players ar ed playing the ball quickly, but the few that don't really cause us problems.

In the first half United dominated and Liverpool looked nervy and looked pretty hemmed in. They worked very hard, and I think it told in the second half. Benteke was isolated for long periods as the pundits remarked. 1st half possession: United 61% Liverpool 39%

Brilliant result. Even though Liverpool dont look great on paper, these games can be tricky. Very important 3 points.

Took an absolute stunner from Benteke to score past us. Our defense is actually looking quite solid so far. More so with De Gea. That is the biggest positive!

Good start for Martial, but he will still need patience. Same for Memphis who was poor.

Blind Motm. Shaw, Smalling & Schweinsteiger also good.

My crush on Rachel Riley is reaching unbearable levels. She's perfect. She's actually perfect.

Positives
1. De Gea is back and doing what he does best - save our blushes. Some say he is one of the best GKs in the World. I say, he is the best GK in the World.
2. Martial. For the first time in 2 years, I saw a forward who had no interest in sideways/backwards passing. He got the ball and charged at the defence. This caused panic and the result was a goal. We have been crying out for a striker who wants to score a goal, as opposed to a striker who falls down at every opportunity (Falcao) or a player who prefers to back/side pass (Rooney). He is also a strong guy (as we saw against Lovren (I think it was him), today).
3. Blind and Smalling are consistently good. Blind, Smalling and DDG are a fantastic back 3 to have and I'd bet money that we will finish up with the least goals conceded this year.

Negatives
I don't want to talk about this, because we are now 2nd place and have just beaten LFC. Now is not the time to get negative.

I don't wanna take credit away from LVG for this win but to be fair I called all those subs (Young at HT, Martial & Morgan after 60mins) before they happened and I'm sure anyone else here who watches United time and time again called the exact same 3 names. What I'm trying to say was it was an obvious 3 subs, I'm still not convinced by him in that regard.

As for the game it was a typical United of new performance:

Before the goal - we attack hard until we get frustrated and try stupid plan Bs to try and nick a goal.
After the goal - we sit back and invited pressure and as always it nearly costs us by letting the opposition play football

There were a lot of defensive and individual positives from this game as well as beating those cnuts but it terms of an attack/creating respect we were very poor which is a worrying trend for us. Just look back on it, we done sweet feck all for the first half and I know football is funny but had Herrera not been fouled we might not have got that goal and it was individual brilliance from Blind and Martial that got the other goals.

Don't get my wrong, I'm trilled we won and I still love the club but there are still the same worrying signs that people tend to forget after a big win.

Great goals and some decent football at times, some awful stuff too but feck it. We won vs those bastards! It's always great.

Great win.

Still concerned with our attacking play though, we don't take enough risks or pass forward enough when given the opportunity. In the first half our biggest chances came from Liverpool feck ups in defence, it says alot. There was alot of times we didn't use the space we had to pass it through the lines, instead we choose to pass it sideways or backwards, Liverpool opened up after the set piece goal, but what if we hadn't got that goal?

This win takes off alot of pressure so that's really positive, now i want to see us improve the attacking side of our game.

Also I thought Schweinsteiger did really well, and held up fitness wise 'til the end. Big games player.

The point with LVG is that just like Swansea we went ahead through controlled football. That doesn't mean slow, we were on top and played the perfect pass. Once we went ahead we have a few players who start playing as individuals, getting caught out of position. He likes players to play with their head and heart, not all heart.
If Depay played with more confidence we would have been really on top in the first half. We had the bulk of play, but it was being broken down in last 3rd as per this season's. Young changed things when he came on because he was more attack focused. Liverpool did sweet FA, bu f for a 5-10 minute period in second half.
People are putting 2 + 2 together and then making out LVG is constraining the players, yet players who take their chance are often the ones who don't play with any constraints, e.g. Herrera, Martial and Young. It is when they don't have confidence they do not try things.

One thing can be admitted though, Benteke's goal has a strong chance of becoming the goal of the season.

Eh, what? You haven't taken any credit away from LVG. Don't worry yourself.
