Watford 1:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

We played quite well in attack. Just need to sort out this habit of our level completely dropping randomly in game where De Gea has to save us.

Delighted with the win of course.

Must be hard for you to watch. Those changes resulted in zero chances, we hardly kept the ball and really were camped in our own half. LVG must really be clueless.

OR

On the other hand, but for some bad decisions from our forward line this could have been a fairly comfortable 3-0 or 4-0. We were in total control even with those changes and the fact Watford went for it when the players took their foot off the pedal, does not translate in to LVG screwing up.
If we want to believe your second paragraph is the true narrative do you not think it's the managers job to do something if his players take their foot off the pedal?

What do you mean undeserved. Undeserved how? More possession, more chances, more shots on target, away at their ground etc etc. Give me one good reason why the scoreline is undeserved?

In the sense of not taking our chances. I believe DDG bailed us out more than Gomes at the other end.

Watford deserved at least a point based on their performance, but I'm glad we showed that urgency after they drew level.

Give it a rest man, you are more boring than the cucumber cat videos now doing the rounds on the internet. You've been so negative towards LvG in general that it's difficult to take anything you post at face value.

Have no fecking clue on how that can be 'undeserved'. Believe whatever you want, but please...

Top of the league. Created chances. Lots of youth. Last minute winner. What's not to be miserable and moany about?

Let's put it this way: if the game had finished 1-1, would you have begrudged Watford that result? They put in a monumental performance, and had us on the ropes for the majority of the second half.

Anyway, we shall have to agree to disagree. :)

On the ropes is a massive fecking stretch. DDG made one great save and we still created the better chances.

But Van Gaal doesn't come on the touchline enough. He just fecking sits there, writing.

It's not the United way.

So ?

They had us on the ropes because they were a goal down and at home, a second half push doesn't mean you deserve anything.

We were the better team easily.

Just like the Fergie days of old.

That really did feel like a Fergie era performance. Maybe not a scintillating game but digging in and grinding out the victory in dramatic style.

Watford played well but we still created a shit load of good chances. The game should have been done and dusted by the hour mark.

I liked Lingard and Memphis constantly looking to stretch the game. Carrick would have had a field day pinging balls to those 2. Instead of the static Rooney. It expanded our game and made us a bit better to watch.

Why don't people learn that an early ball is the best, AH's 1st time ball should be a lesson that you should just put it in between the defender and keeper first time.

We're Man United, we'll score when we want.

Great to see the fight back from the team and we got our just rewards. GGMU!

I can't believe some of the moans in here.

The front three were very good, I completely got confused picking their movements on TV, the way they kept interchanging was awesome to watch. Thought the midfield was pretty good.

The bad part of course was allowing the opposition back in for DDG to rescue us. But our attack was bright and exciting

You really didn't see the change in shape and formation after Ander went off?

Did you notice our manager shouting instructions at our players to change to the 3 at the back?

Did you notice how fluid we were before the change and how many support runners we had in attack, and then how isolated the man up front (Memphis in the first half, Lingard in the second) was after the change?

Does it matter what you watch on the pitch or do you just check the result and then take the easy option of calling people haters when they have an opinion? I've backed Van Gaal all along and still do because I think he is improving the football intelligence and technical ability of our footballers. But I can criticise his decisions when I think he's made a mistake.

Today I feel he made a mistake by changing the shape of the team mid match and while we were on top.

I was impressed by that too, and Young's contribution in that regard. Even when Herrera had left the field, Memphis and Lingard carried on and didn't drop deep looking for the ball a la Rooney. Credit to Schweini for keeping the momentum going and to Schneiderlin for breaking Watford up high up the field.

So without any strikers, we switch to a formation that needs two?

Thought we ballsed that up but credit to the lads for keeping on going.

I don't approve of your posting style but I agree with this bit. I thought he'd put Blind in the middle, after all in the first half of last season there were times when Blind was the midfield. Still, LVG will no doubt have learned something, and at no cost that's a bonus.

Actually craved some zombie sterile passing in the second half.

Ball wouldn't stick up front and Watford deserved their equaliser on the whole.

Still, feck it, late winners always amazing. Biggest celebration since Martial vs Liverpool.

What exactly about my posting style?

I was just a little frustrated at being called a hater for having what I felt was a legitimate criticism.

Very pleased with the way we responded after the soft penalty. It seems like ages ago since we staged a similar come back.

I saw all that, but what you are doing is putting 2+2 and making anything but 4 to put LVG down.
Herrera was initially positioned on the left. It made perfect sense to put blind in left midfield and Rojo at LB.
LVG is not responsible for players making bad decisions. One only has to see Young' performance today to understand what LVG wanted the team to do. However on 2 or 3 occassions, Young because of his own confidence, made a bad call which put us in a difficult situation.

All in all we should have won that match comfortably even with LVG'S (odd to you )formation.

ah, missed that. Hater's a fecking stupid term as well, never seen a good post with it in. I think I'd best be off before I insult anyone else!

"In the first half, Memphis was superb, like Jesse Lingard. I think also this role for Memphis is the best one for him. He played it also in the World Cup for me when [Robin] van Persie and [Arjen] Robben were injured so I knew he could do it. Jesse also was fantastic and we have created a lot of chances thanks to those two."

Sorry I think I'm coming across crankier than I actually am today! Didn't insult me at all - I was genuinely asking in case I was being more of a dick than I'd intended!!!

Interesting to note that our run of clean sheets started and ended with goals from a penalty. The last time we conceded in open play was Arsenal's 3rd back in early October.

You've got this one wrong bud. Have a back look through my posts if you like and in the last month alone, you'll see me backing Van Gaal in the Everton match thread, the Paul Scholes thread, the Mourinho sack thread and two or three others (just off the top of my head). I'm a fan.

I agree it would have made perfect sense to put Rojo at LB and Blind in midfield but that isn't what he did. You could clearly see him point to the back and hold up three fingers. Immediately our shape changed and we were lined up with 3 centre backs, 2 wing backs, 3 in the middle and 2 up top. We lost all cohesion.

We had Ander Periera on the bench and he could have slotted straight in for Herrera. Young could have done the same with any one of Rojo, McNair or Darmian coming on to fill in at full back.
