PL L FA Premier League

Manchester United 0:1 Southampton

Post-match discussion

Sat, 23 January 2016

Southampton looked dangerous from set pieces throughout, getting closer and closer. I could see we needed to score two goals to stand a chance. Sadly I don't remember a single United chance, only a bit of a surge when Mata come on, then we had a the Darmian injury and in no time at all it's 80 mins into the match.

I doubt SAF was impressed with the Januzaj sub. Adnan looked like he just got out of bed just before coming on. Really with what's happened to him, I don't think it was wise. Would not surprise me if that's that with LVG.

Yeah what I find funny about that is that he will give a player 1 or 2 poor performances before giving up on him totally while expecting United to give him poor performance after poor performance without showing him the door.

Are they blaming the manager? I know they want to support the players, but if they are playing to the managers instructions nothing will change until he goes.

Yes a lot of blame for LvG from the matchgoers, Rooney also getting a lot of stick.

People wonder why he has not signed players? Because he can then chuck in kids who will be eternally grateful to him, would put their hands into a fire if he asked and whose careers he will end up destroying more than enhancing in the end.

I 'missed' the game...I never miss United games.

Ye I was there - despite the lack of action of the pitch, atmosphere in Jstand was still decent. But the players didnt respond and there was more booing than Ive ever heard at OT at full time.

I remember being asked this a few months ago and at that point there was a small amount of people mostly in Stretford End booing but the feeling of discontent has spread massively.

I personally would neve boo but as I said on the podcast last week, I can understand why it has gone that way.

Thanks mate. Doesn't sound too great tbh. :(

Do you think the booing is all directed at LvG? Or at LvG, Woodward and the board and to a lesser extent the players?

Remarkably similar to last season. Crap game settled by one chance in Southampton's favour.

The mouse? I'm a little slow today.

Edit; never mind!
People were asking why some hadn't changed their vote in the LvG Out thread. I think some are in hibernation. One was this little mouse, who woke up and thought. "We are in a pickle. I will log on the RedCafe and change my vote to Sack him now".

Yeah, that's what I thought. Obviously.

And next season I reckon. If they were going to sack him because of shit football and mediocre results, he'd already be gone. He's here until the end of his contract.
I'm hoping that the reason he is still here is that we are in with a genuine chance of landing Pep. There is no other plausible reason for him to still be managing United.

its aimed at LvG and the players - I dont hear much talk in the stands about Woodward and the board TBH

You would think his family would be asking him to quit now for his healths sake.

This is what I would be doing.
If I were a loved one and he returned home today, I'd tell him that he should retire and go enjoy the rest of his life.
Someone of his age, who is ready to retire doesn't need that much hatred directed towards him. And the thing is, its going to get worse, there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

It definitely won't get better for him. Not a great way to end a career.

The 5-3-2 formation wasn't clearly working yet still he persevered for the whole game. That's well....

Yet really the board are letting this all roll along. The club is festering.

well Im actually glad that our board has some patience and is willing to give a manager time - I do not want to see us turn into a managerial merrygo round like Real, Chelsea etc. But of course there is always a point when a change is for the best.

The players were also awful. The biggest issue was LvG not changing the formation until the final whistle.

The frustration is understandable and unfortunately we are in a bad spell and it seems after today the majority of fans had enough and expressed their frustrations. There is no improvement from the previous season and as a dutchie it saddens me to see LVG in this position, because i had high hopes we would put a convincing title campaign under his reign during his second season. I do not know what to think of LVG right now, because i was convinced that he would be a success here, but i can not deny the holes in our system, the decline of certain players and the thought and purpose behind the tactics and subs.

Everything has become robotized and the players are like bionic persons programmed and conditioned to keep the dull system intact. The gaps between midfield and attackers are bigger then a retired call girl's love temple and its frustrating to see clubs like Norwich coming to Old Trafford and playing football that we should be playing and they have a far more inferior squad. When we step unto the pitch we are not only playing against an opponent, but also against ourselves. We do not have a system which can blow opponents from the table, therefore we play the football we feel comfortable by such as walking the ball to your team mate, back passes to the defenders, going for the safe options and hoofing the ball forward when the options to play with the feet are not available and that happens a lot.

The poison, determination and urgency is missing like a birthday cake for a prisoner and at this point fans are not all that fussed about a United game being on and that is very sorrowful. Anyway, the fans should stick together and we must support the club no matter what.

Mate, I am with you 100% all the way and agree completely. You know we both have pretty much the same feelings about United on and off the pitch, and like you I wanted LvG to succeed so badly, but it just isn't working. I sense the last line of your post is you conceding the same.

We're just being sentimental. There's only ever been 3 managers who have lasted long term in the Premiership. Sir Alex, Wenger, and Moyes at Everton. They all performed to their clubs expectations and above. I'm not saying we should change for the sake of change. LvG is clearly not working which has been obvious for some time. Barcelona, Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern have not had long term managers and are still at the very top, change has not hurt their success.

Well Im not quite in the 'LvG Out' camp yet but that performance puts me a step closer! to be honest I wouldnt be surprised if he resigned

Yes the players definitely need to take a lot of the blame - especially the forwards, Rooney and Herrera offering very little

to be fair, Van Gaal did make a big change at half time but it made little difference in the end

when it comes to managers, there is a big difference between the way Barca and Bayern are run compared to Real and Chelsea - Im happy to take the former two as an example to follow but not the latter.

He just changed personnel. Not the formation. The wing backs were just not working.

Bayern have a great structure. Need to poach a few personnel from the club. Sorry @Balu

I bloody hope we've somehow talked Guardiola round, because that is literally the only way I can possibly rationalise us sticking with a manager who, never mind the players, has completely lost the fans.

well i expected that having Herrera rather than Fellaini in midfield would give us more creativity and forward intent but it didnt happen

How come we haven't learnt from the previous shit results and god awful performances, then?

I know there's nothing else the players could say, but I'm sick of the usual, cliched garbage that's being spouted after every single bad result. I guess I notice it more due to the fact that it's same old shit, different week.
