Europa League 2015/2016

No you don't want to meet us, we just destroyed Shrewsbury and Midgyland

Klopp vs Dortmund will be good

Just finally want a reason to go to the OT. Any team bar Leverkusen (hate inner league duels in International tourneys) would be fine for me. We have at least a 50-50 chance against any team left.

Hilarous. Anderlecht guy falls down on a slip in the box and lands awkwardly on the ball, whole Greece crowd starts laughing, 30 seconds later he scores the equalizer.

Round of 16

Braga (Portugal)
Valencia (Spain)
Sparta Prague (Czech Republic)
Lazio (Italy)
Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine)
Athletic Club (Spain)
Leverkusen (Germany)
Fenerbahçe (Turkey)
Tottenham (England)
Dortmund (Germany)
Olympiacos (Greece) or Anderlecht (Belgium) [going to extra time]
Manchester United (England)
Sevilla (Spain)
Villarreal (Spain)
Basel (Switzerland)

I genuinely don't fancy us against anyone in that list.

Dortmund, Sevilla, Villareal and Tottenham are imo the 4 top teams in the competition. Any other team winning it would be quite a surprise to me.

I wouldn't be shocked if Valencia surprise everyone, not because of Gary Neville but because they have a quality team who have been way under performing and the injuries to key players they did have are all pretty much gone now.

I rate Villareal as the storngest Spanish team left. They are extremely annoying to play against and rock solid in the defense. Probably my least favourable draw left in the pool.

Agree.

I think Braga or Sparta Prague would be good draws. Anderlecht/Olympiacos too, Fenerbahce and Basel aren't that great either and of course Valencia. We always beat Liverpool too. So not that bad I guess, the others will be difficult if we don't step it up.

I saw their games against Espanyol and Granada and they were dreadful despite winning those matches. They´d need to step up big time and I just don´t see it. The new coach might help, but it would need a miracle to win the euroleague.

I still don't think they are that good. They were very lucky against Granada. The Rapid game gave them confidence, but I don't think you can take much from the result. Rapid was really that bad, their defence display was one of the worst I have seen in Europe at this stage. They scored the same goal like 6 or 7 times, I don't think they will ever have it that easy. But with more confidence who knows, of course they have underperformed so far, but they still don't look like a well-organized side for me.

We'll see, the thing with football is that once you get on a run of good results it lifts the entire club and that can be enough to wake a club up and rise up a few gears. All depends on the ties I guess, there are some decent clubs in the competition, should be an entertaining next round.

Apparently this is the first own goal of Casillas career.

If Weigl scores that goal it stands and the bookies rub their hands. And obviously if this was a no-name keeper it stands, too. But now the Madrid press can drag Casillas through the mud. Win-Win.

Would love a big team like Valencia or Dortmund in the next round... should make for a great night at OT.

Say what you want but i would take any team before taking Basel, they turn weird every time when they play vs English team.

Neverkusen are also a very good team. But we know how history goes for them.

I think maybe something like this?

1. Dortmund
2. Spurs, Villarreal
3. United, Sevilla, Leverkusen, Shakhtar
4. Liverpool, Athletic Bilbao, Lazio, Fenehrbace,
5. Sparta Prague, Basel, Olympiacos, Valencia

Can we play an English side in the next round or do we avoid them until the quarter finals?

A favourable draw for us and a lot of those other sides will take each other out.
I don't see why we cant make a run at this

Yes its possible to get an english side. Last year at this stage we had Fiorentina vs Roma and Sevilla vs Villarreal.

4. Liverpool, Athletic Bilbao, Lazio, Fenehrbace,

Donetsk and Liverpool are one tier too high, the rest looks fine.

Hopefully we can. Our best chance to qualify for the quarters is to draw the scousers.

Its open draw starting with the next round, so yes, its possible.

Olympiacos are out. They were knocked out by Anderletch.
But they are also among the weaker teams. Just put Valencia one tier higher and I agree.

Would like to see us avoid Liverpool and Spurs til the semis, would be great for the coefficient to see three English teams in the semis.

Braga or Sparta can't decide which one is worse hence getting it tomorrow.

I don't think it's relevant anymore for next year. England will keep 4 teams for CL as both Napoli and Fio are out, only Lazio are left in LE and they are far from spectacular.

In CL Roma are all but packed their bags already and Juve will most likely bow out to Bayern..

Throw in Anderlecht with that bunch. Third in their league. A certain Club Brugge are top at the moment..

True, but they have a very talented young group of players, who seem to play better in Europe. Tielemans, Praet, Djuricic... some very bright talents!

That's a really strong last 16. Really hope we can make it to the semis at the very least.

Wouldn't mind us drawing Valencia. They run around a lot and that could lead to some fun games.

I know but we have Rashford, Riley & Varela so they can piss off.

It is difficult to rate some of those teams, because we have three big teams – United, Liverpool and Valencia – who should be among the favorites, but their performance doesn´t reflect that.

my rating would be ~

1) Dortmund
2) Spurs, Villarreal, Sevilla
3) Athletic Bilbao, Leverkusen,
4) Liverpool, Lazio, Shakhtar,
5) Valencia, United, Fenehrbace,
6) Sparta Prague, Basel, Anderlech

Sevilla is more or less on par with Villarreal and Tottenham. They suck away from home, but they might solve that problem sooner or later. They are nasty to play against and are very experienced in Europe. If they find form away from home they´d become my #2 behind Dortmund.

Bilbao and Leverkusen are both good teams that have a good game plan. They just lack individual quality compared to the top4. Shakhtar might be part of that group; I don´t really know them. After that it becomes difficult. Those teams either lack quality of are in shambles.

I put Pool ahead of United, because on a good day, they can beat all teams in the competition. They are terribly inconsistent, but that is not the worst thing in a cup. You just need to find form at the right moment. Do I believe that they win it? No, but I think they have better chances than us; we are just consistently shit.

Olympiacos is out, they lost at home to Anderlecht.
Pool shouldn't be above us, they are as shit as us and potential-wise they have less quality imo. Van Gaal beats them always too, would be a great draw for me.

Olympiacos are very strong at home, which makes it very difficult for any team to play against them in a cup tie. 1. There's no fecking way teams like Lazio, Shakhtar and Liverpool have a better chance of winning it than us. Why are you even putting Shakhtar above us when you admit you have no idea what they're like?
2. Olympiacos aren't even in the competition anymore.
3. Sparta Praga are way better than people think. Just because they're from the Czech Repiblic doesn't mean they're shit by default. They're a better than than Braga, Basel, Fenerbahce and even Anderlecht and could give a game to almost any of the remaining teams. They destroyed FC Krasnodar, who gave Dortmund all sorts of problems in the group stages.
4. If we get some players back, I'd rate our chances just below Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham.

I get why people are not optimistic about our chances (hell, I don't anyone thinks we're winning it), buy this is just taking things to the extreme.

I'm not sure you can use the logic that on their day liverpool can beat anyone and then not say the same for us. If we play well we can take any of of these teams left. We have had a shocking season and yet Liverpool are behind us, i just dont see how you can rate them higher

BVB vs Klopp would be massive. But probably too early for that.

Some cracking fixtures today:

Kick-off 18:00 GMT
Donetsk - Anderlecht
Basel - Sevilla
Dortmund - Spurs
Fenerbahce - Braga

Kick-off 20:05 GMT
Villareal - Leverkusen
Bilbao - Valencia
Liverpool - United
Sparta Prague - Lazio

I expect wins for Donetsk, Sevilla, Fener, Valencia and Lazio. Dortmund may scrape a win too but if so only by a small margin (and no clean sheet).

Perhaps it's arrogoance, but surely tonight & the return leg are the biggest fixtures in Europa League history? Maybe outside of the final.

As I've said before, I hope this year raises the profile of the Europa League. I think it's a great competition and I'd rather be in it than not have any European football at all. The last 16 have regular CL participants so I really can't see the difference apart from not having the obvious elite teams in there. I'm hoping we go all out to win it. If we get past Liverpool we'll be favourites along with the winners of the Dortmund/Spurs tie.
