Yup. This. Raiola's latest tweet is a lesson in classic negotiation strategy. Earlier, United offered what they did to beat off a real competitor - Real Madrid. Now that Madrid's not on the table any more, an "imagined" competitor must be created. Now, with the money involved, only PSG, City or Real can compete. Everyone knows City and PSG aren't in for him, so the next best is Juventus itself. The threat of "he could stay" will ensure United continue to strain every sinew to make this happen.
It happens in my business all the time. If we undercut competition on prices and know that we're the best commercially, customers bring up the bugbear of "my budget is only XXX". It's so common that I barely give it a thought when I see these artificial competitors being created...

Why should we be looking at other quality players? We are rich, why do so many of our fans want us to penny pinch instead of battling the likes of Real and Barca to the best talents in the world. It's utterly baffling.
Look, it doesn't matter if he isn't worth that in a football sense. Juve wants that amount. United want the player not only for his current ability, but his potential. Potential in football, potential to show the current players, fans, and future signings that United will do whatever it takes to win trophies. Potential to bring in sponsors.
Reputation matters a lot. Just think of Zidane. He going to Real Madrid is still paying off because many players grew up idolizing him. Those young players want to play under him and want to play for the shirt he played under.

That's because of the group psychology that takes place in transfer threads, not the transfers themselves. There are a lot of weak, emtionally feeble people in these threads who somehow think football will make them happy today by presenting them with a shiny new player. If it doesn't happen according to their impatient timelines, they then suddenly get sad or angry. The way to deal with transfer threads (as always) is to allow them to play out and get excited after we buy the player, not based on the speculation that we might buy them.
Yes, the player will go to another club, not renew his contract with a club that can't compete with us financially or otherwise. Real Madrid are out of the picture, City, PSG and Barcelona aren't in the scene. The only thing in our way is Juventus. That doesn't worry me at all.

Way back in 2001, Juve themselves paid over £47m for a goalkeeper. Granted that Buffon proved to be excellent value for money, but the fee doesn't half make Pogba's price seem a bit more reasonable.

I'd like Pogba back and don't care about the fee as long as he wants to be at Utd, if he doesn't then feck him and we'll get someone else or 2 players for the same money, there are options out there that we could make work, Kante (albeit a different player but could shore up behind Hererra and Schneiderlin) or Gomes/Neves

Look, we have seen off Real, and I am confident we will see of Juve, BUT they are still have a huge say in this. Many of discarded them as an option, but they win leagues, compete in the Champs League etc.

That does not sound plausible. The agent is the player's solicitor. If your solicitor is allowed to do deals behind the club's back you might as well do it yourself. Same thing, only he is a professional.
