You think the 2007 squad was poor?

This one?

So you think that one is poor but the current one isn't. Ok fair enough mate i disagree on both counts, i would swap any squad we've had for the last 5-6 years for the 2007 squad with the players we had and the football we played back then.

I agree with some of your other points though especially on Moyes and Van Gaal. Moyes did take a title winning team and feck it up. And Van Gaal has been playing too many players out of position for well practically every game. And yes they looked like a bunch of strangers half the time because well they were. Too many new players brought in in too short a space of time will result in that.

The squad was poor in the sense that we didn't have good cover for Ronaldo, Saha was massively injury prone, and Fletcher was our only other central midfielder and he didn't come good until 08/09. Fergie rectified this by bringing in Nani, Anderson, Hargreaves and Tevez in next season.

07/08 was the best squad United have ever had.

No no no... He said "quiet poor". They were poor with money, nothing to do with their performance on the pitch...

Thin squad doesn't automatically mean poor squad. Smith and O'shea from time to time played as a central midfielder. Park, Giggs, Fletcher, Solskjaer can play as winger. Rooney, Scholes, Giggs can play as #10. Solskjaer, Rooney, Smith are enough to cover for the 2 forward position in 4-4-2. Saha was pretty fit in the second half of 2005-2006 season and quite a while into 2006-2007 season. He got back to injury prone mode was unfortunate than neglecting to strengthen the forward depth from SAF.

Agree on 2007-2008 in term of quality and form/ balance of the squad over the whole season is our best squad under SAF. Looking back at 1998-1999 squad as a whole, it's not that much better than the 2006-2007.

We had Park to cover for Ronaldo, Carrick and Scholes barely missed a game that year so Fletcher was more than enough cover. Saha was injury prone yes , that was the only major weakness within that squad evidenced by the fact we had to get Larsson on loan for 3 months.

The 2008 squad was great but in terms of numbers it only had two more players than the squad from the year before. Nani replaced Solskjaer, Pique replaced Heinze, Tevez replaced Smith. Hargreaves and Anderson were the additions in CM to allow us to play with a 3 man midfield on a more regular basis.

The 06-07 squad had way more quality and strength in depth than the current squad anyway which is the comparison being discussed in here.

This is where you are getting it wrong, that had a good team, but you telling me that has a squad is better than the current one, not convinced, the first 12 players at best carried that squad, which makes the 2007 better because of the 12 players and of course we had fergie, but has a squad it was poor and it was a miracle how we won that league title without a single injury. Has a squad its quiet poor brown silvestre heinze were quiet injury prone, so already united went into the season luckily VDS nevile ferdinand vidic and evra stayed injury free, we had no idea solkaer scholes saha and giggs would have the season's they had, Richardson, smith and saha were were no where close to what rooney and ronaldo was, and park a good squad player but if we lost ronaldo to injury I would be worried who would replace ronaldo, because we had no plan B with that squad.

If united even lost ferdinand evra ronaldo or rooney to injury, we would not have coped. So I would only agree I would not swap neville oshea ferdinand vidic evra carrick scholes fletcher ronaldo giggs and rooney for anyone of the current team, but I would swap VDS brown silvestre solkjaer park smith and saha for some of our current players, because they would have added more depth to the 2007 team. Rashford, martial, DDG, smalling shaw herrera replace some of our squad players, because we did play a huge gamble with that 2007 team. So yes they had a better team and manager, but has a squad I would be very worried going into a season with that exact squad, now if we add players like we done for 2007/08 we got a different story

Now the 2007/08 squad I would say was far better, there was still that worry if we lost ronaldo and rooney, we would only have tevez, but the squad coped far better than the 2006/07 since tevez alone made us stronger

The 98/99 I would say was better than the 2006/07, on the fact pete, nevile keane scholes butt giggs yorke cole solkjaer and sheringham were better than carrick scholes fletcher giggs rooney smith and saha. I would have ferdinand vidic evra ronaldo in that 98/99 squad, but on the other hand ronaldo would not have made the assists beckham created that year

Alex Ferguson might have had an idea mate you know, otherwise i suspect he would have made more than just one signing that summer.

On the current squad being better than the 2007 one, if you honestly think that mate fair enough personally i think thats ludicrous considering your main criticism of the 2007 squad is that while it had a good first team it did not have much strength in depth. Well the current squad has neither so bit of a strange argument for me.

The 2007 first XI would wipe the floor with the current one, theres not much between the second XI's in terms of quality in my opinion either.

I think the current squad there is allot of players you could choose from that would strengthen the 2007 squad in place of some of our strikers, and add more to the midfield, I think the squad we have has a deeper pool, has you cannot really have a squad like we had in 2006 anymore. Really? fergie had a current idea, its the same fergie that sold ronaldo, let tevez go, and signed owen, obertan, valencia and diouff, so fergie was not perfect. He gambled in 2006 and luckily it went his way, the current team does have a bigger pool of players with the added CB signing and zlaten signed has like I say you cannot go into a season expecting the same 12 13 players to carry you through a season it needs a bigger pool to get through week in week out, they just never had a manager that knew what he was doing. If Moyes and VG were in charge of the 2007 team, they would find a way of ruining that squad also. Without fergie I don't think the 2007 team would have won that PL title, he was that crucial in how the team became the best again. DDG, blind, Smalling, rashford, mata, martial, I would be happy to see replace kuszeck, silvestre, heinze, park, smith saha and solkjaer.

But like I say, beyond VDS, neville, ferdinand, vidic, evra, carrick, scholes, ronaldo, giggs, rooney, you could easily say the backup was nowhere near has good as its made out, united luckily had a manager that knew how to manage it. They just had a good first team, but beyond that is pretty average

So you would take some our current first choice players to replace some of the second choice players in the 2007 squad?

You do realize with that statement you just defeated your own argument don't you?

If current first XI players couldn't even get into the 2007 team, then how the can the current squad possibly be better. Think about that one mate.

This was an edit on my last post you might have missed. Which squad would you prefer?

Yeah Fergie didn't have a clue did he.

He had no choice but to sell Ronaldo he forced the move, he could do nothing to keep Tevez as he wasn't United's player. City offered him and his agent double what United were offering and off he went.

the current team does have a bigger pool of players with the added CB signing and zlaten signed,

When i talk about the current squad i am referring to last seasons squad. Bailly signed yesterday and has never played a game for us and Ibrahimovic is still a PSG player and may never actually sign for United neither belong in this discussion.

Like I say I agree the first 8 or 9 players were better than the current squad, but we do have a deeper pool even though VG sold so many players. United's first team in 2007 was far superior if we added tevez, beyond that I would not say uniteds backup then was pretty average

Uniteds first and second team are not too bad, would the 2007 first team wipe the floor with united's current team? hard to say since uniteds problems have not been the top teams, its been the smaller teams they have struggled, if you check the top 6 record against each other, united come out on top by quiet a distance. The quality of uniteds squad has been a manager having no clue what he is doing, and that has been united's problem, appointing managers either out of their depth, or a decade past their best. I would agree the current squad has holes only because the way VG managed this squad, but I think its more to do with players having to prove to everyone than anything else. I think 2007 team would beat the current first team, but it would be tight because VG seems to know how to compete in the big games

Yes I don't think fergie was quiet on top of his game in the transfer record between 2008-12, the lack of money spent in the transfer window is why it cost us in the PL in 2010. I think we do have a deeper pool than 2006, the 2007 team luckily never lost too many players to injury at one time

I still think it was a miracle how fergie managed to get the amount of games out of scholes and giggs not just games but the performance levels were unbelievable at the age they were at, especially scholes after his eye injury, against that chelsea team who were much stronger than us, so I think it was more fergie magic than the 2007 squad being actually great, considering how small of a pool it was. How fergie managed to get 6 months out of saha who we knew could break down any moment, how even guys like solkjaer and smith played their part. If we went back to 2006, I think we all had doubts how vidic, evra would cope in the PL in a full season, scholes and giggs in their 30's, how ronaldo and rooney would link up after the world cup in 2006, and the ronaldo madrid saga, carrick was a new signing and no one can deny many had doubts with the carrick signing, especially selling RVN. So there was has many question marks back then about the 2006/07 squad, what we did have? was one of the greatest ever managers who some how beat a much stronger chelsea squad

So while the current squad has holes, going into the 2006.07 season, that squad also had holes is well it was not perfect

Sorry mate but it's not hard to say at all, in fact it shouldn't even be a debate they would hammer the current side badly, United have did well against the current 'top' teams in a league where Leicester won it and Spurs came 3rd. The 2007 side would have won the league last year by an absolute landslide, they won 3 titles in a row and a Champions league when the league was much much stronger than it currently is.

The 2007 side had arguably as many as 7-8 or even 9 world class players, the current side has one De Gea or two if you count Martial at that level already.

On everything else mate i will be honest i don't have the time to read it all right now. But needless to say i probably wouldn't agree with a lot of it, as we just seem to have opposing views on many things. Fair enough though we are each entitled to our own opinions.

We are very off topic at this stage so i think we should just leave it there shall we.

Like I say, the current side did not have a ferguson in charge, the 2007 did, and I would argue we had less than 9 world class players in that 2007 team. I would say VDS, ferdinand, vidic, evra, ronaldo I would say were world class, scholes and giggs were world class in moments during those 3 years, rooney another I would not class has world class, to inconsistent to even be considered on that level, mixed with good to average players making it a well oiled team. I think we won 3 titles in a row because of the manager in charge, not really how good the squad was. If we had no fergie, we would have lost ronaldo in 2006, and we would not have kept him until 2009. So I would say fergie was the main reason behind our success, we will see what a world class manager like Mourinho can do with this squad.

Disagree with most if not all of that post mate. Cheers bye.

sure united in 2007 would have won the league with a moyes or VG in charge lol

Sorry mate but what the feck are you actually on about, i said nothing of the sort.

You have been spouting the same guff in your last 4-5 posts, gems like Scholes wasn't world class, the 2006-09 squad wasn't that good it was all Fergie, this only a few posts after implying he didn't have a clue.

Frankly mate your posts are all over the place and i honestly can't be arsed reading them anymore. I have tried in vain now 2-3 times to end the discussion politely as we are way off topic but yet here we are still derailing the thread...

Over the place? you said originally the 2013/14 squad could actually win the league with jose which is questionable at best, there is no way none of us can honestly say going into the 2006/07 season it was a guarantee we would win that PL title, that is just fact end of, if you want to be angry about it and not debate fine

This squad is shocking compared to 06/07. It's not even close.

This squad is shocking compared to 06/07. It's not even close.

Its not shocking, its been horribly miss managed. I would like to see how the squad is managed by someone who knows what they're doing, thats what I want from this squad. If Jose can't fix it, yea maybe the squad truly could not be saved, but lets see how this squad with added additions can do. This squad may never reach 2006-09 levels on the simple premise, we had one of the greatest players of his generation in ronaldo, and fergie one of the best ever managers, could martial get to those levels? we don't know, its highly unlikely

Over the place? you said originally the 2013/14 squad could actually win the league with jose which is questionable at best,

I said with a few key signings and if Jose Mourinho had taken over in 2013 i believe we would have won the league, whats crazy about that we were the fecking champions after all.

there is no way none of us can honestly say going into the 2006/07 season it was a guarantee we would win that PL title, that is just fact end of,

Again mate this is another example of your posts being erratic, where did i suggest this. feck it when was i even discussing such a thing?

I never said anywhere that i knew we were going to win the title going into that season.

if you want to be angry about it and not debate fine

I'm not angry at all mate but the conversation just got tedious so i wanted to end it because there was nothing interesting left to debate, i said several times i disagree with you but we are both entitled to our own opinions and lets leave it at that. Both our opinions are too far apart and i have no interest in trying to change the opinion and views of others so it was pointless to continue.

God! Blind is so overrated on here.

That's some good news!!!! :):):)

First step in the right direction from Mourinho. I like him a little bit better if this happens.

Those two should be the least of our worries, but I do like that he's being ruthless.

Not fussed about Mata one bit. Not good enough. Blind as well, but I don't think he will leave as he can be a decent cover for a no. of positions.

Blind would have more fun in Italy or Spain anyways, he even said himself that his style is more suited there.

I like the thought of having a very athletic team, no more weak players.

I would hate to see Mata leave. Blind is fine with me, don't see a role for him anymore.

No big deal if true.

It's actually best for the club to get rid of average players who doesn't fit to manager's philosophy...

Who gives a feck about Blind? He's not good enough to start for United in any position. Sure I'd rather keep him than that clown Rojo but he's hardly much of a loss all things considered. He's got to be the most overrated player on this forum with all the babbling about him being an "intelligent" player. Couldn't give less of a feck about Blind leaving.

I don't see any justification for getting rid of Mata though so let's hope Mourinho knows what he is doing here.

Wouldn't be too bothered by this.

Good. Sell them both.

Of all the people to bump a thread trying to be a smart ass about a player, you are the last one who should be doing it.

Don't really know what i'm doing amongst that shitshow.

Tbh they're two players you'd suspect Mourinho might get rid of. Especially Mata.

Easy to say the opposite in hindsight.

A common theme in the first few lineups has been physicality.

Well, today both passing and physicality were balanced and we saw a bit difference.

You don't win games just with physicality unless of course they can pass really good too.

Kinda surprising seeing so much negativity about Blind.
He was one of Utds most consistent players last season. Played 50+ games aswell.

Hey, if I'm negative towards United and our players/managers, I'm only glad to be proven wrong. I'm sure that fan who made the "Tara Fergie" banner was pretty happy that the club didn't listen to him.

Still don't think if it's a big deal if they leave in the near future, pretty shitty bump Tbf.

Wait did he really go through 18 pages? Sad feck

I was dubious of keeping Mata but glad we did. Fully believe Blind should be starting at CB for us. Both were brilliant today.

Other than the 1999 squad, obviously.

He was LB today. I think thats his best position personally. Its a problem with shaw as he should be the better player, but i think blind has been a better lb for us overall.

Good job experts. They are arguably our best players.
