Has political correctness actually gone mad?

I keep remembering the video of Toronto, where a professor is trying to make a speech about freedom of speech and young and supposed intelligent people turning white noise apps and refusing to talk about problems in a sensitive manner.

Even found the video of a report about it.

My suspicions were raised when at no point in that video was it ever made clear what these people were actually protesting, other than the vague notion of "free speech"...Which, of course, is clearly not what was happening, because nobody protests "free speech" do they?

Looking into it a bit, it turns out what the kindly old professor there was so irate about, was Bill C-16 -
"The enactment to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act to add gender identity to the list of prohibited grounds of discrimination."

Oh... Yes the protesters were being dicks, but a little bit of context goes a long way, and selectively edited, agenda driven videos like that only seek to demonise the other side, and - ironically - shut down the view they dont want to be heard. In this case, by literally editing it out of the video all together!.

Here's another video from that obviously unbiased, fearlessly truth seeking source.

This channel really is about completely deceving it's viewers in order to instill hatred. Comparing the refugee crisis to a handful of extremists is akin to comparing Jews fleeing Germany to the worst Jewish people of their time. It's completely biggoted. Note the 2 people giving speeches were close ups and the video claims 'mass protest'. Let's guess that it's a very small protest of brainwashed youth with even more tiny numbers of Syrians if there are in fact any there.

EDIT: I just opened the comments section to this video on youtube, there is no hope for humanity.

This is my problem with a lot of the posts in this thread. They're either by people seemingly desperate to find examples of "political correctness going mad" to prove some kind of lefty agenda, or often just by people casually duped by a right wing source/sensationalist headline into thinking it's gone more mad than it has. Rarely is the actual story ever as "mad" as reported.

Sadly most of the world seems to fall into one of these categories at the moment, though.

It hasn't been the same since sharia feminists banned St Greavesie's Day.

Seeking to enshrine anywhere between 30 to 80 made up genders in law is pretty mad to be fair.

Yeah. I came across some other videos of this channel, and it's really biased, I had never heard about it before.

And after, I caught a Joe Rogan Experience with this professor, Jordan Peterson, he talked about that. I find it odd, this bill, to be honest. Criminalize people for not using the right nomenclature for you gender or lack of, or discussing it? By the way, it's getting really hard to have a civilized debate now a days, notably here in Brazil.

This bill seeks to expand the rights to fight discrimination, right. While I'm all against discrimination by any kind of parameter, I dread this type of wide and generic concept measures, because it can always be abused. And it will.

I could be wrong, tho. Sometimes I lose context reading in English

Preserve us from a National Trust that's so achingly right-on: JAMES DELINGPOLE on a once great institution's plans to promote the gay and transgender links of our finest houses

You can only resign in disgust once — or I'd definitely be doing it again over the announcement that the NT plans to stage a special season of LGBT (that's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) events entitled Prejudice And Pride 'as part of the nation's commemoration to mark 50 years since the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality'.

The gentleman doth protest too much. Even the DM readers are calling him out on his bollocks.

He had to delete this tweet after a load of backlash. Some people need to get a grip.

Saw that tweet yesterday and knew it would cause ructions. Not because its offensive but because people are twats. Amazing how people go out of their way to be offended.

https://www.jacobinmag.com/2016/12/trump-zionism-israel-palestine-zoa-free-speech-sjp-activism/

The incoming president’s policy plan states that “The US should view the effort to boycott, divest from, and sanction (BDS) Israel as inherently anti-Semitic and take strong measures, both diplomatic and legislative, to thwart” it. Trump will also “ask the Department of Justice to investigate coordinated attempts on college campuses to intimidate students who support Israel.”
...
Students and faculty who openly support Palestine or criticize Israel immediately become subject to various forms of attack. A shadowy McCarthyist website, Canary Mission, has profiled hundreds of students and scholars. The website aims to warn future employers about these individuals, whom it describes as antisemitic terrorism supporters.

Other Israel advocacy groups, working more openly, have made similar attacks against students and faculty. Recently, UC Berkeley cancelled a student-led course that examined Palestine through a settler-colonial lens in apparent response to pressure from over two dozen advocacy groups that called the class propaganda. The dean blamed Paul Hadweh, the Palestinian student who proposed the course, for failing to follow approval procedures. Only much later did the dean apologize — inadequately — for these false accusations.

The course was reinstated a week later, but the damage was done: the university had signaled that any attempt to critically study Palestine would be met with lengthy ordeals, baseless accusations, and public attacks.

At the City University of New York, the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has spearheaded campaigns to get the group Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) banned from all twenty-three campuses due to alleged antisemitic activities. An independent, six-month long investigation, however, found that the claims either could not be substantiated or could not be attributed to the student group, that the group’s activities were protected political speech, and that the “tendency to blame SJP for any act of anti-Semitism . . . is a mistake.”

Nevertheless, the damage, again, had been done. New York legislators responded to the ZOA’s alarmist accusations by threatening to cut CUNY’s funding because of its “failure” to address the alleged antisemitism.

I can see why its caused a bit of a ruckus. We know its meant in a nice way but just something about that wording just seems a bit... off.

Still, it seems insensitive to kick up a fuss about it given the subject matter.

Yeah but you can't possibly know if someone is witty and bright until after you've got to know them.
Girls are really smart and really funny. Get over it!

I struggle to understand what goes on in people's minds. It really isn't that hard to be not a cnut but I guess some people just have it in their genetics to be a massive cnut.

I'm offended that the thread title isn't 'Has political correctness become existentially-challenged?'

University of Sussex bans gender-specific pronouns being used by their staff without the person's consent.

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/25105...nd-emails-as-they-dont-want-to-assume-gender/

It's stupid shit like this that imo completely undermines the progressive left. I've got nothing against transexuals and i realize they have to deal with a lot of shit on a regular basis, but they have to realize they are a very small part of the population and this is not how the real world works. If you are going to throw a fit every time someone magically does not know your preferred prounoun you are going to have a tough life indeed.

Also, more often than not, this kind of nonsense comes from some University campus. Read a while ago about some law professor at NYU who got dragged before some commission because the word "disgusting" had come up during one of his lectures and this student felt like he should have put a "trigger warning" as a disclaimer

Later they had a hearing where some of the students demanded that put trigger warnings on pretty much anything and that campus should be a "safe space" for all.

Come the feck on. If you are going to be a lawyer or a judge, i'd wager there is a good chance you will see and encounter some pretty grim stuff during your career. How the hell are you supposed to learn to do your job if you can't hear about subjects like rape, abuse and murder without being "triggered" to the point of having some mental breakdown.

It's a rule for the purposes of the University of Sussex Student Union - I doubt the amount of their members regularly misgendered at meetings is that small.

It's Brighton - putting aside the trans issues - even our cisgender heterosexuals are often short haired 'tom-boyish' girls, or effeminate boys in make up, where it's easy to make a mistake and unnecessarily annoy someone.

I have to admit, i misunderstood at first, but the unless there happens to be a disproportionate amount of transgender people in the student union i don't think it happens that often either.

Surely if you are transgender you would want to be referred to as the sex/gender you identify with? Ie a biological female who presents himself/herself as a boy would like to be called him, and a biological male who presents herself/himself as a girl would like to be refereed to as her?

What they are doing is just harmful to themselves, because they are creating this false bubble of security that eventually will burst once they move outside of campus. 99,93% of people won't ask about your preferred pronouns when they interact with you the first time, and will call you by whichever gender they assume you are/want to be called

It's an SU for a university in a city with a massively above average size trans community. It will be greatly disproportionate.

It does feel that it is not preparing them for the real world and workplace.

It's not trying to. It's a student union, not a secondary school.

Immediately after leaving which, most graduates will try to find work. I guess uni is a bubble in many ways, but my going the extra mile, it does feel like they are going to make it even tougher for the students when they leave and find you don't get 'safe spaces' in a call centre, office or wherever.
Would be interesting to know what the demand for this was prior to the change, whether loads of students were actually lobbying for it or whether it was just deemed an issue by some NUS council.

'They' works, too, and doesn't suggest disdain.
We're throwing the laws of grammar out of the window...

I can almost guarantee that nobody cares outside of the SU. Engagement with SU's across the country is virtually nil (I think only one university and I cant remember where, Durham maybe, gets over 50% turnout for their elections) and most are somewhere between 20-35%.

They sometimes even forget what they've done themselves. I remember my favourite one here was when they had to hastily reverse the boycott of RBS because they'd forgotten they were boycotting them and they wanted to show the six nations in the bar.
