'It's just the Mickey Mouse Cup, remember all the years we finished 4th and were out of the Champions League by early March the following year?'

Whow. A win and thats all that will count as far as the record books will show. But what a fortunate win. The best team on the day lost. A reverse of the 2005 cup final when we were beaten by Arsenal having played them off the park. Mind you thats football.

No one said life was fair.

Not quite the same as that game, we did score 3 goals today, were never losing, and weren't absolutely battered!

How we came to be 2-0 up, I have no idea.

But some nice football got played in the 45 seconds before we scored the winning goal, :D.

I'll never forget this final for a few reasons.

Zlatans performance
Zlatans late winner
Scaring my 3 year old daughter to death after the Zlatan goal then her joining in with the celebration and running around the room with me despite not having a scooby about what was going.

For all the Oppo fans and others who have snide digs at this Trophy you need to realise that it's not the trophy it's the mentality.

Think about it for a second... 2 of the biggest winners in the History of world football continually and in somewhat of an annoyed tone mention the Charity shield by way of correction each time the press ask them about their first trophy potentially being the league cup. The charity shield ffs!!

This is the difference between the all time greats and the winners and between the winners and the losers

Does anyone dig at this trophy these days> That's so mid 90s!
There's 3 trophies to win, and huge teams have won 1 trophy in a decade. So you can't knock it.

I don't care about performances in finals, all about result.

It's amazing though how a winning result can alter the perception of a performance. Looking at the individual players threads so many are getting praised. It makes me wonder how we struggled against Southampton if so many players did well.

I have been on Redcafe for many years. I can't recall anyone on here calling it anything other than the MM cup. I'm not surprised by the revisionism, bound to happen.

I honestly don't think we earned that but a wins a wins a win. Moureen looked proper fecked off at the end, he knew we were a tad lucky but let's enjoy and kick on.

Can't speak for others, but I've never once called it that.
We had a period in the mid 90s where the big clubs messed about with it. But when you look at the winners of the last 10 years, you can see the big clubs take it seriously these days.

Nah that's not true, I'd say the majority on here are respectful to this Cup.

To be fair it is a Mickey Mouse cup. What would have been shit is to lose the so called Mickey Mouse cup to a team like Southampton (no disrespect, but they're a team we should be beating). We've been through a hectic period since Fergie retired, so any trophy no matter how small is still a fantastic feeling.

The season ain't over, and a trophy is a nice start to our huge fixture list. If we finished the season outside of the CL places and no other trophy other than the League Cup then that'd still be a bad season.

Yeah don't disagree with that. It's the lesser-est of all competitions for sure but you wouldn't turn down silverware.

We were terrible today, it was a good match though and full credit to Southampton, they were excellent.

Just back from the game. We didn't really deserve it, and the vast majority of the game was torture, but nothing beats a late winner...except a late winner in a cup final! Almost fell down two rows celebrating, so safe to the lads who caught me!

Feel a teensy bit bad for Southampton, because they were excellent (and because we mocked their light display after the winner, only to find out when we left that it was a tribute to their dead owner, so that probably looked classless) but posterity won't remember that. It'll remember Zlatan coming, seeing and conquering. I've never been critical of him, but I could see why some thought he missed a lot of sitters and many of his goals were the product of experience more than genius. Today surely ended all doubt though. That was proper. That was match winning. That was Cantona.

I can't really think of anyone else who actually played well. Even Herrera, who was probably our second best performer, continues to lose possession in ridiculously dangerous places through sheer sloppiness, and Pogba's infuriating insistence on inviting multiple people towards him when he's loads of space on the half way line, just to prove he can roll/turn/out muscle them continues unabated. How that game ended 11 a piece was a miracle with some of the flailing challenges (mostly from us) abounding.

But feck all that. We won, I'm buzzing. The big plate and the silly little three handled cup may not be the most prestigious silverware (in fact they're clearly the least) but they're the only silverware available at this stage, and they're both ours. And we're still the holders of the FA Cup to boot. This side is going places.

Not one of the best games we have played this season but it was a typical cup final in respect to the form of each team going out the window. We did well to keep solid at 2-2. One piece of class separates the teams thanks to Zlatan.

Don't want to spoil everyone's party, but even before Southampton scored the first goal when we were 2-0 up, all I could think of is that Chelsea will rip us apart with that defense!
We've been very clumsy at the back in the last couple of games

Poor, lucky, undeserved but all I will remember tomorrow is that we have Zlatan

The squad was tired, one of the our biggest problem is the lack of turnover

Ibra, Pogba, Herrera play every game, even the useless game.

We won. Simple, we played 3 or 4 times since soton last played 2 weeks ago. They had two weeks to basicallyt drill a game plan for us. We had 3 days and just came from france after playing with 10 men for 35 mins. We deserved to win because we had a massive handicap and still found the energy and the drive to win the game. We were shit so what im fecking over the moon to have another trophy. Hopefully we lift one or 2 more before the end of the season!

Can't help but think things would have been a lot easier had we rested more players for the away game v St. Etienne. Though that's easy to say in hindsight I guess.

Mourinho has a lot to do to build a strong mentality with these players. That was abysmal for the most part- but we won and that's what counts. In the long run however, we have got to toughen up and not let the occasion get to us... No better role model than Zlatan.

Also what's this nonsense about the lad being denied a hat-trick? If we got 1-0 down that changes the complexion of the game. It doesn't mean the events would've unfolded exactly the same way. We could've even gone 2-0 down. We could've woken up and smashed 4 in. There's way way too many variables. Hat-trick my arse. It wasn't offside and it's shocking really I'd be furious if that was against us. Having said that, a million things happened between that moment and the final whistle. It was early on, and hardly a robbery.

Great summary Mockney.

Bolded bit is important too. If we aren't good enough to win the title I'm fine with being a good cup side whilst we regroup and rebuild.

Did anyone else feel the Rooney presence was a bit awkward?

It almost felt like he was doing a John Terry but at least he was an unused sub.

Just finished watching the cup final!

Very happy!

Didn't think we played that well, but we showed great resolve to grab the winner at the end.

1st of many under Jose hopefully!

Watching those Southampton FB's contributing so much in attack and being relatively good defensively you really have to wonder how good our side would be with proper FB's. LB especially needs sorting.

Agreed, noticed it against St. Etienne too. Imagine having wide players who can actually deliver accurate crosses most of the time?

He was absolutely awful. A liability today.

Rojo, on the other hand was good.
Really? It was his failure to clear a regulation clearance that led to the "non goal" and he could have given away a pen. Look he showed desire but he's not a top class LB and never will be.
Bailly was at fault for their first and showed rawness but he's not a liability
