Ander Herrera vs N'golo Kanté | Thread has gone well

Herrera doesn't get much credit because United aren't in top 4 but that's more because of horrendous finishing by the forwards. Herrera has been excellent in CM throughout the season.

Kante was their best player. Not saying much but people on here have a propensity to jump on his back as soon as he makes a mistake. Chelsea lost because their team collective was shambolic and Utd's were superb.
Are we just pretending the complete feck up for our second goal, where he got mugged off twice by Young in a matter of seconds? Incredible how infallible he is for some people. The commentators didn't even comment on it. He was poor today, Pogba got way too much of the ball.

Kante is a better player, but my God Herrera was a Valencia-esque machine today.

Pretty much.

Kante is massively overhyped. He runs around a lot and wins the ball back yeah but he's not a special player.
He got completely mugged off today, and until Herrera got sent off in the cup it was the same again.

I also loved how Martin Tyler was saying that Herrera, after two fouls on Hazard, should probably get a booking on his next. Meanwhile, Kante was on like 5-6 fouls at that point and not looking like stopping.

He's a great little player Kante. I do like him. But the amount of love and praise he gets from pundits and fans alike is way WAY over the top. Best midfielder in the world some said :wenger:

I'm starting to think this 2. He's obviously a very good player but the hype surrounding him is astonishing. In 12 months time we'll see how good he is.

Not even mentioned once at all. Imagine if Pogba had a mistake like that.

And it's a criminal error. It's annoying how immune to criticism he's become.

Did I say he was good? Jesus Christ.

As for the goal - yes he's made a mistake but it was not a clear goal opportunity. Herrera got turned by pedro in the box but his shot went high and wide. Simply put I think there is a group of people who can't wait to shit on Kante just as much as you think there is a group who think he's infallible.

And if you get influenced or wound up by commentators that's your prerogative.

To be fair to Kante, he still made 5 tackles and 7 interceptions, which was more defensive contributions than anybody on the pitch. However, Herrera taught him a lesson today. Not only off the ball, but on it too. Complete performance from Ander today.

The impact of those plays didn't register. The stats today mask what was a poor performance from him. Still think Kante's great defensively, just not today.

Kante is a top player but he's hilariously overrated on this board, so many posters think of him as 'best player in the PL' and then there were few who thought he was going to win Ballon d'Or

Still did his usual bit of winning lot of tackles, running and fouling a lot but all this reputation is built with him playing in a winning machine that is Chelsea.

The group of people who can't wait to whip his nuts out is far, far bigger. He was absolutely dump today, he deserves no defending whatsoever.

Today was his day. We did well with the Kante problem by playing around him since we can't get past him
 I have no clue whether your love for Kante is less than your feelings for United.

The FA cup game, you came rushing to this thread to say Kante is head and shoulders above Herrera and today tou are defending him when he was schooled in midfield. It's really funny to see you falling over yourself to justify how painfully average he was.

Kante, as good as he is, is massively over hyped.

Not just on here. I believe Lampard called him the best midfielder in the world which is mental.

Nah, I have nothing but love for my team, but Kante is a better player. He is unique in his ball winning abilities. Not today. Herrera was better.

Kante did not have a bad game, he basically had a standard Kante performance working hard for the team at winning the ball back. Being a nuisance and breaking with pace.

Herrera's overall defensive contribution is usually better than today, because today his job was to basically man-mark Hazard rather than chase the ball.

However, it's undeniable who the better player on the ball is or generally going forward. Herrera is on 10 assists after his assist today, Kante has 1. Herrera's passing, vision and control are miles better.

Agreed. He's a very good player but the credit he gets is completely overboard.

Kante is not a better midfielder than Herrera. The stats back it up if you doubt your eyes.

Kante is a good player. But he is not one of the bestest midfielders currently as you read here sometimes.

I wouldn't change Herrera for any midfielder in the league now. He is the better player between the 2

Pretty sure Herrera matches him in tackles and interceptions this season. Plus Herrera can contribute going forward.

No no no.... you are doing it wrong. Stats is the new 'American' way of looking at sports. You need to watch the game with your eyes and see that Kante 'dominates' the field better than Herrera

Kante is better at not getting booked. Relentless fouling went unpunished today.
He's a gentleman. He never complains to the ref and his fouls are never bad. Compare that to Herrera who strongly reacts to every foul, dives and generally complains. One is more likely to get booked than the other.

His reputation was built last season.

Herrera had the better game but Kante is still a better player.

Not true. He is, but he's not a complete midfield who would suit many type of tactic set ups aka Pogba. While the game at SB would be testament for Kante being a very good player, this game showed the difference between a complete midfielder vs a specialist between Pogba & Kante.

I don't see the comparison between Herrera's current role vs Kante's (until Matic got off) though. Herrera has a more defined deeper holding role & were instructed be cut throat aggressive in his work. Kante is usually higher than Matic to chase and harass. Not impressed most of the time Kante is utilized in holding role. City despite the defeat ran though the space between Chelsea's midfield & defense in the first half. If we're to try harder at 2-0, there was a gap in their midfield & defense after Matic went off to exploit too.

I've been watching both since last season. Kante was better at Leicester though. They were a better unit than this Chelsea.

Unique in that he wins the ball back for his side less than Herrera, or that manages to contribute nothing going forwards at the same time?

No he isn't. He's a good defensive minded midfielder. He wins a lot of tackles and makes a lot of interceptions but he's not a good enough footballer to be regarded special.
He wouldn't start at a lot of top clubs, and I'm never even slightly impressed whenever he plays in a big match.

You downplayed him but then showed that you can't tell his best strength. No, he's not winning a lot of (or more) tackles than an usual defensive midfielder or intercepted the ball enough. His strength is to press which either force error, or simply guide opponent to play the pass into Chelsea's hand tactically wise. He often play higher than Matic means that, while doing his job to press, the tackles & interceptions won is bonus which help his team to counter attacking more efficient. He's decent carrier of the ball too, which is Herrera's weakness as no 8.

As I said he's limited, but he's special kind of his limited role. If I have to put it I would say Inzaghi's type of special.

The Kante > Herrera myth is mainly because of the european fan tendency to rate the worst player higher than te best one.
Nonsense. It's the British media that does this, which many fans got caught into. The continental fans would tell just by the EURO what Kante's limitation while also appreciates his worth

Jesus. He had a good game. Let's not talk silly :D
