EL W Europa League Semi-final 1st Leg

Celta Vigo 0:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Thu, 04 May 2017

It was only a trick, that´s it, we have Man Utd. were we wanted, now they feel overconfident we are going to play how we really know. :D

Joking aside, well deserved victory, you were cleary better and could have scored more goals, physically outstanding, Im still wondering if we won one individual duel. Pogba was the "Señor of the ground" here in Vigo.

Anyway, faith is the last thing you lose, I would go with Marcelo Díaz and Fontás, more technical players, instead Tucu and Cabral for the second leg.

Congratulations.
Love your username

Why is Celta so shite though? They have no urgency at all even when they are a goal down. Are they lacking match fitness?

Mkhitaryan lowest rated player tonight? I mean he wasn't good but at least he created something and had few good through balls. Fellaini and Herrera had worse games I thought.

Think it can work both ways. They've rested players for past 3 games but you can seriously lose match sharpness. It's a double edge sword.

We won't win by ''doubling up'' our away goal - which is a subtle & quite good point - a 2nd one would be lots more better. Which I think is your point? maybe...

But the way you say some of your other stuff is erm... 'unclear' - shall we say, :).

edit - yeah, like @Pogue Mahone has just said :D, 1-0 up & more on the way, :D

He just means there is no scenario in which you go through "on away goals". So no, a 2nd wouldn't have been any different for that. It just means the home side has to score at least once in the first leg for there to be a scenario in which the away goals rule comes into play for the team that play away first leg (if the home side lose). This is all very uninteresting :D

Job done. Pogba done great. Blind and Rashford also very good.

Celta have no real pace it seems. Gave us time to reshape very easily.

But a 2nd goal which is part of a 2-1 win,say does then let you go through by doubling up your away goals possibly... if you lose the home leg by 0-1.

No scenario like that (as I think we all agree) can happen with a single (1) away goal but it's still worth having beacuse as Pogue says, it still does count as a goal - for which we should have great joy in our hearts.

Meanwhile, a better video of the Aspas corner & it's use in relieving immense pressure on the opposition

Didn't think Bailly was excellent tonight, he made at least 3 unnecessary mistakes by my count. He was good but not excellent. Blind (in particular) and Darmian I thought both had very very good games at the back. Valencia dependable as always too.

Yeah, he is usually a beast but tonight both Blind and Darmian had better performances in my book too.

However, love how he is capable to establish good partnership so quick. Rojo before, now Blind.

Celta Vigo forum

They are far superior, both physically and technically. Pione the best, the worst Radoja. Aspas is far from level makes a few games, a shame.
Physically yes. We have eaten. Now footballing gagging them. Only carreritas of Rashford and Pogba class. The rest is an insult to football. But of course with the coach ...
Well , I'm disappointed that you want to tell, not so much the result but by the way.

Certainly it was not the sultry image around the Cup semifinal, but I thought they were going to achuchar much and we have not done them or tickle.

Not if it has been too much respect, if weighed the significance of the party, fear of failure or .. is true that Manchester is a better team than us, but so are the Barca and Real Madrid and against these usually always be much braver.

Anyway, I thought that not being the favorite in the tie we would be more loose, but has not seen. All this does not hide that this season, what football is said we have very little.
Look at the comments on the first leg against Shaktar.
They are much better, which arrived here .... and what happened? I do not think Shaktar worse that this Man Utd seemed to me indeed better Ukrainians.
Manchester United are a physical but football and goal zilch beasts, if not dead - ball or make a goal 5 games. Like Mouriño regrets not having tried to kill the game in the first leg, and pursue his own cunning.
We have nothing to lose and everything to gain, nothing to temporize in turn, Celtic is more dangerous when they go all the attack. I think we're going to spend, I really think, next Friday remember this message. Hala Celta !!!!
Wass, Aspas, Tucu ... got out of gas at the end of the season. Or resting in the league.

And they are physically much stronger. We can not pose a physical game. But today it felt were much higher (when really am sorry to see them play for a big team) because the Celtic tongue comes out at the end of the year.

They are the Atleti Cholo, but technically worse.

Throw them a goal there soon would be key to try to pass, but do not think it will be an open match at all. Stick a goal for this team is complicated, and no spark even more.

Today we have been much lower without them have done much footballing talking.

You have to try, but is very screwed.
Mourinho will regret not having gone for the second goal.

We will win 1-2 at Old Trafford and will be inscribed in golden letters in the history books of heaven for eternity.
Physically and tactically superior.
And above all, they know very well what to do with the ball.
It makes me laugh many analysts and press saying that the danger of them came from head ... and head have been a bluff. It is on the ground with the ball at his feet, where we have a lesson today.

Sorry for Berizzo but Mourinho has completely won the game. It has seen rival who has studied and who is not.

And Pogba is an animal; tall, burly and with high quality. Radoja or Tucu could not with him when they were paired. Not worth 120 Kilos, but 80 the pay lot.

Yes of course it's worth having haha it's always better to be leading!
It's just the away goal rule is irrelevant in this scenario is all that guy you replied to was saying.

Congrats United fans on the win tonight. Would love to play you in the final. (Ajax supporter.)

Why the feck were we wasting time with only 1-0 up? It's not Barcelona we're playing!!

Too wasteful (shock horror?!). Tie far from over, cause, well.. we're not gonna score at Old Trafford.
Because now they need to score two at OT.

They won't and they will concede if today was anything to go by.

Granted 1-0 is a good result away but this tie is still far from over. In fact, I'd take a 2-1 win. We really should have tried to score a 2nd goal as 2 away goals would a very comfortable result going into the second leg and most importantly, we don't have to rest our key players against Arsenal.

good performance, we where great for 70 mins, bit disappointing we didnt press our advantage and try and kill off the tie, isntead of getting men behind the ball to protect our lead, but i guess thats Mourinho's way.

Rashford is looking more and more like he is ready to be our starting number 9.

Also want to give a shout out to Blind, for a guy most fans describe as not a real centre back, he continues to have good performances in the roll when called upon.

Very good win but, also frustrating not to have scored more. There isn't that go for the jugular mentality especially when there is a team in front of you for the taking.

I thought at half time it would have made sense to bring on Martial for Fellaini and move either Mkhi or Lingard behind Rashford. One there was so much we could have done with one of them linking up with Rashford and the spaces and also we had no threat on either wing to take players on until Rashford moved out left a few times. Plus I thought Fellaini was going to get a second yellow with the way the game was called in the first half.

Final is there for the taking now. Need to make sure we start on the front foot at OT next week and just kill the tie early.

We needed that sec goal yes, but looking at us this season we haven't killed so much games so that's why I'm glad we won and scored an away goal, with some average players on the team like Lingard and even Mikhi looked so damn average let alone Fellaini. Hopes Pogba be so careful the sec leg as he took a very unnecessary YC otherwise the guy was in control and a beast, hope we can score early at O.T next week and from now on we have to put alll our eggs into E.L basket.

Celta Vigo are awful. . probably shouldn't be surprising considering they've lost over half their matches in La Liga this season.

Combine that with their inexperience at playing such ahigh profile games and this match should've been a much more comprehensive victory for MUFC. . .

But it wasn't.

United have had a nice easy run in this years tournament (unlike, say, Liverppool last year) and they have been very poor.

A considerable improvement required to beat Ajax.

Agreed, he looks really good. But he also has a few things to fix before being fully ready for the task. In my opinion, he'll be ready not this season that starts but the next - 18/19.

I really liked the way Blind fooled the GK with the free-kick. Made it much easier for Rashford to score. Must give credit to Mourinho as he's said that they've taken a lot of time to train Rashford with the free-kicks.

Loved the game and Pogba is really starting to look like a leader to me. Loved his performance. Next season will be great for him, I can just feel it. A solid team effort but I'm a bit sad about Mkhitaryan's form, since it would be so useful to have him in the best form. Lingard does so much good, but it's always the final touch that is missing.

I'm still very optimistic about this cup, but Celta will be a tough opponent in the next game, since they'll go all in. And let's face it, the team haven't been that strong at home, so nothing is certain yet. But I trust Mourinho and hopefully we'll see Mata too.

Good performance , unlucky maybe not to have got a 2nd that would have effectively been tie over , but we are still well in pole position now and if we avoid complacency we will be in the final.

Chelseas route to victory in this competion was easier and they were even more shite. Ajax are probably similar quality to Celta. We are playing well and finishing poorly. Had Mkhi and Lingard scored their easy chances made from cutting through celtas defence in the frist half we would all be ******* at how sexy our football is now. We really need to finish the chances that this team creates. We were in total control of that game vs celta. Just need to score the chances

Where are those rolling over before the team even landed in Spain? They're a poor side, we gave them too much respect at times albeit needed. Should have ended 3-0 after 45mins.

Rest Rashford, Bailly and Herrera against the gunners and we will kill them off next week.

It's such a pleasure to see Rashford becoming more and more complete with each game. He looks about 27-28 with his maturity and like 19 with his pace! We still need a big money striker to come in and ease the burden. I'd love to see Rashford play 40 games a season instead of 65 just so we can get some longevity out of him.

I'm still waiting for Blind to be 'done by the pace of their wingers'. It never happens, someone posted saying it's a Red Café myth and it really is. He always gives 7/10 when called upon and he will be here for the next 5 years at least. It's players like that that Fergie loved to have, similar to O'Shea, P Neville, Solskjaer and Park who would be out of the team for a month, and step in and perform at a good level.

Lingard does so much more than many posters see on here, he is an important part of the current counter attacking, defence stretching tactic. He makes the off the ball runs that we don't see because he doesn't get the ball. Rashford gets extra space because of Lingard, Pogba gets a big hole to run into in the midfield because of Lingards runs and its great to see, he gets a lot of harsh criticism but he will be sticking around as a Mourinho squad player for sure, even if he is replaced in the first team next season.

If anyone had any doubts about Pogba just watch the influence he gave us tonight. Look back at the games we've been without him. He is a huge engine in our play. He makes sloppy mistakes, bad passes, holds the ball too long and gets tackled, but I'd take that all day for some exceptional passes, surging runs, and legs we've not had for years in the middle. He will only get better and cut out the flaws he has and be a top top player for us I'm sure of it.

Mata is being readied for our most important 6 games of the season. When you looked at the bench tonight you saw good players ready to play on Sunday at Arsenal. I wouldn't be surprised if we finished 4th AND won the Europa. Put that with the League Cup and the Community Shield and of course the strides in quality this season compared to the LVG era and you have to take your hat off to Mourinho and say job well done in his first season. I don't understand the doubters at all.

Job well done but jesus fecking christ we should've killed and buried the tie 4-0 only to make the return leg into a glorified friendly. Unfortunately 1-0 is still competitive but Celta Vigo are pure garbage. Hope we do them 5-0.

For me Rashford won't improve anymore been a bit part player, if we sign a big name striker over the summer and limit Rashford's starts, he isnt going to be ready 17/18

Maybe Rashford won't be 100% ready for next season and will have a few dips in form, but we have to give him the chance to go out their and learn the game now if we ever want him to be our long term number 9.
