If we win the Europa league

I wanted us to go on and win it when we got dumped out of the CL under Fergie and was quite annoyed when we were eliminated by Bilbao. If you're in a competition then you want your team to win it, simple as. I enjoy every trophy we win, whatever its significance.

Sums it up just about perfectly... if you are capable of winning, win. I don't see the benefit of pretending we're too good for a competition were currently in (especially when it leads to a place in a stronger tournament) and losing. The players and fans alike need a stronger winning mentality.

People saying no one cares about the trophy... keep telling yourselves lies. People care. It may be people you don't care about or people and teams you fail to acknowledge that want to win it, but everyone would want to win this trophy if they were in our position. We can't sit here and pretend our team has the quality it had 7 years ago, it doesnt

The Ajax Rostov and this Ajax arent remotely the same. Not compareable at all.

Furthermore I like your stat but you probably dont even watch Ajax and it doesnt hold any context. Ajax completely outplayed Celta Away just like United but forgot to finish the match, similarly as Standard Luik, but Ajax played with a B-team that match and were already through, still outplayed them witb youngsters but didnt finish the match just like United, and conceded a late goal. Schalke away has been the only poor match away from home, but even then with 10 man they fought back to clinch the victory.

Neutral ground isnt the same as playing away by the way, Ajax have young players and get impressed quicker by opposition fans. (Veltins Arena is really impressjve and scary when full), Neutral ground will have 1/3 United, 1/3 Ajax and 1/3 Neutral, not really the same effect.

Have to agree with you.

Ajax is a dangerous opponent. Their front line players dribble well, are quick and they offer significant goal threats.

I also tend to remember the EFL final a lot. To be honest, we were fortunate in that game. I was surprised to watch Southampton outplay us and they also had a goal cancelled. An argument can be made that both Ajax and Lyon are better squads than Southampton at the moment.

I am not too confident about that final mainly because we have a worrying number of attacking players who have been inconsistent all season: Martial, Mikhi, Lingard, Mata and even Pogba. The big question is how many of them will show up on that day? If they all do, then I am sure we will take out whoever we meet.

(probably) Ajax - 2nd in Holland - 3 points behind Feyenoord - and probably not a better side than Anderlecht
I don't think you'll find anybody in or between Brussels and Amsterdam with the same opinion. The difference with Feyenoord is just 1 point, and last month Feyenoord was happy to leave Amsterdam without their trashing beeing reflected in the score. Feyenoord is easily intimidated in European matches anayway, and the current Ajax is on a different level than Feyenoord was before christmas.

If we squander this chance - it would probably be the biggest disappointment I have experienced in MANY years.....
United is the favorite of course, but if Ajax plays well United will have to play a lot better than against Celta, Anderlecht or Feyenoord.

It is however true.

The CL place makes the EL more valuable for sure and it is a trophy. But it is a minor trophy and not something to get excited about if you are Manchester United.

There are only 5 competitions that a team can win at the start of the season, the EL is one of them so it is a major trophy.

The Europa league isn't the champions league granted but it's still worth winning if you are in it.

If we lose the final and our opposition is in the UCL already where does that place go?

Just for context

The Europa League is the trophy none of Europe's big clubs want or expect to win.

Typical City fan.

A lad in our work has recently called the Europa league and League cups shite trophies.

Fair enough they aren't the best trophies to win, but for god sakes, you've got to actually win loads of trophies before you can start being negative about them. They've won next to nothing!!

No big club wants to play in the EL, granted. But once you're there, winning is what sports is all about. Sometimes we get sidetracked with revenues and financial reports, but winning trophies is the real bottom line at this level.

I get excited for every competitions United wins and I'll be excited if we can EL. I find it odd that some people would want to diminish that achievement. It's not the CL of course, but you're still allowed to enjoy the win, if it comes.

It's a means to an end, and important to us in our current state. I see no reason to pretend it's anything but a Mickey Mouse trophy, though. Unlike its predecessors, one might add. So, this «we've never won it» argument doesn't hold water for me. The EL is per definition a B-list competition, unlike the old UEFA cup prior to the CL expansion, or the CWC.

Someone nailed it above: Win it to avoid it next season. That's our level right now, so we have to make the best of it.

We can win it, we smell it really. I just hope players overcome the pressure and do all what they can which I'm sure they will considering that this trophy can overturn their poor season and win us a trophy and C.L spot.
We are almost in the final, just hope we don't bottle it because it will mean we lose top four and E.L in one week and that will be a disastrous end.

And also no big club prefer to participate in it so may be that's why we need to win it because we don't want to be in it considering we lost top four also.

Took a taxi ride today and the driver, a LFC fan, reckons it'll be a great season for us all considered.....If we win yeah, it would be .

Team which is really really hard to beat is not average. I don't see much difference between us and atletico madrid for example.
Also we didn't have luck this season at all. For some draws we are quilty, but for 4 or 5 it was pure bad luck and all those wrong refs decisions( how people quick forget that). With that 10 points we would be still in title chase. So to called us average is simply not true.

Yeah, it's a fine line, or 200 million.

I hate the term Mickey Mouse trophy, especially when it's used to describe an actual major trophy. What does it even mean.

The Europa is not the biggest or most prestigious prize but i don't see the point in denigrating the competition and acting like it's beneath United to win it. Its not the Premier League or Champions League, but right now we obviously aren't good enough to win either of those. So this is the biggest cup we can win.

There's 5 major trophies on offer in football that United can win, the Europa is one of them and the only trophy the clubs never won. You would think every United fan would be pleased we are still in with a chance of winning something at this stage of the season.

Spot on. Wonder if these people celebrated when Zlatan scored the winner or they were like "feck it its only micky mouse cup".

If we win the EL it would be the most successful season we had since SAF's retired

And people are forgetting that we'll be in the Super Cup if we win it so another chance at glory.

Winning the Carling Cup and the Europa League would be a fantastic first season for Jose, especially considering the amount of work he has done and still needs to do to get us to the top again.

It will be a good season if we end up with 2 trophies (1 community shield). our trophy cabinet will be complete. Winning all the competitions we have participated & an early chance to play against a CL winner in Super Cup and if we beat them then everybody will know we are back and can compete with the very best also players will have lot of belief coming into next season and will drive them for further more glories.

I dont really get the 'Mickey Mouse'-thing about the Europa League. Sure, it's not the same as Champions League but surely it's easily the 3rd best trophy to win for any team during the season?

Based on the fact you now get CL football if you win the Europa Cup then you could arguably say it's the 3rd best. Call me old fashion but I still love the FA Cup so I have it down as joint 3rd :D

The ranking points are also important.

We're not average. We've not taken our chances. Too sloppy in the final third. Defensively we have something to build upon. But let's win the Europa League and go from there.

I can't think of a team to be so average yet come out of it with two trophies and qualification to the Champions league.

How mental will it be.
What? Since when do United have an average team? I'm pretty sure you guys were one of the two title contenders at the start of the season? United have a good team, possibly 2nd best squad in the league imo.

To me the CL has ruined a lot of things. I would be quite happy for the CL to be for the Champions and then have the EL as a knockout competition and bringing back the CWC. All they are bothered about if TV revenue even if it dilutes the quality of the competitions.

Since it became important for the Mourinho fans to run down our squad to prove what a great job Jose is doing.

Our starting 11 is decent but is still missing a couple players to make it work. Add a player who can break down defenses and someone who can finish 2 chances out of 5 and we are in business. The rest of the squad though is very average.

The 'Micky Mouse' trophy that can earn us a CL spot. Micky Mouse indeed.

This is quite interesting. Another reason to prioritise it!

You're talking as if we're winning European trophies non-stop for years. We won only 7 European trophies total and our last European trophy was in 2008. Any European trophy to boost our record is welcome.

So equivalent to finishing 4th in the league - basically a minimum requirement.
Just like winning the Champions League is sometimes equivalent to finishing 2nd or 3rd(or 4th too)..

So you think that winning the Champions League is no more prestigious than winning the Europa League and is only really seen as a way to qualify for next season's competition?
