What can possibly be done? If I want to get in a car, armed with a knife, and mow down people and stab them I can do it. We cannot police against every possible situation.

We can all accept that we may die in a car crash. It's a risk we decide to take every day. What we don't accept is getting killed in the name of fecking religion.

This is also happening every day.
 
Best case scenario is that the fatalities turn out to be the knife lunatics. They wouln't be re-opening train stations unless they'd either caught them or knew they were long gone.
 
Here's a recap of what we know so far:

  • Police confirm there is more than one fatality
  • Reports suggest there is more than one incident
  • First, a white van hits pedestrians at London Bridge at about 22:15
  • A short time later there are reports of men carrying knives at Borough Market. Armed officers responded and shots were fired
  • A third incident is taking place at Vauxhall, Scotland Yard says

You accept the risk that with driving the car there's a chance something can happen. Everyone knows that, it's part and parcel of driving. Things like this however, what, you accept the risk that walking in London you might get run over and stabbed? Or you accept that risk that you might go to a concert and get blown up?
People attacking you isn't supposed to be part of everyday life.

True. They're far more likely to target the low risk results of big events (such as big crowds on the street after a CL final) than the actual event itself.

Though given how horrific a live attack at a big football event would be for public consciousness, some people are ayre to find it tempting.
 
Natalie and Ben were coming up to the entrance of the underground on Borough High Street when they saw lots of people running.

The married couple witnessed someone being stabbed.

Ben said: "I saw a man in red with quite a large blade, I don't know the measurement I guess maybe 10 inches. He was stabbing a man...he stabbed him about three times fairly calmly.

"It looked the man had maybe been trying to intervene but there wasn't much that he could do he was being stabbed quite coldly and he slumped to the ground.

The attacker and another man walked off quite "boldly".

"A table was thrown, a bottle was thrown at the individual with the knife and then we heard three gunshots and we ran," he added.

Just got home from driving through central London. Was really confused as to why there were sirens and police were further south when the incident was at London Bridge but just heard now of the Vauxhall incident. My brother in laws friend claims he saw his boss get stabbed, but that's too many degrees of separation for me to believe. I really hope it's not true, hope there are as few casualties as possible.

The risk and how you accept the risk are two very different things though. Terrorist attacks are naturally more horrifying but when it comes to deciding whether to attend X event then the actual levels of risk are more important.

Yeah, ish* because that's what they've been reduced to. There aren't that many people willing to martyr themselves, mangey cause or otherwise, and those that are, are not clever enough to be sitting around scheming in logistical detail how to infiltrate large, heavily policed events. They're angry idiots, which is why they a) get caught a lot, and b) succeed with largely simplistic, fool proof plans. *Even "blowing self up on train" is pretty unsophisticated, and they've even abandoned that as too risky these days.

It's got nothing to do with religion, this is not just going on in Europe but also in the Middle East. These people aren't religious at all, they just want blood.

Probably is to an extent - Nice was (I think) the first major one in recent memory that saw the use of a vehicle, and since then it's become more common.

The 'DIY terrorist' concept is also interesting - again, a lot of the people who seem to be carrying out these attacks at the moment are people who affiliate themselves with ISIS but have often had no/limited direct contact with the group itself. Which probably makes it difficult to monitor/stop unless they're already on the watchlists etc.
 
BBC are really looking after the welfare of their reporters tonight, this is serious.
