Chelsea 2017/18 thread - FA Cup Champs, League chumps

Do you think Man United will go further than Chelsea in the Champs League this season? If so, care to make a small bet?

I'll make a small bet with you. Conte is woeful in cup competitions.

£100?

With the added Champions league football, and having downgraded their striker position (Morata is no Costa, as much of a cnut that Costa is), I think they are actually weaker than last season. If they sell Matic to us, that's weakening even further. They'll battle it out with other top teams for top 4 this season. Can't see them winning the league again.

What lesson was that? How to spend a lot of money and finish 6th?

A Chelsea fans shouldn't try to use the term of "a lot of money" in debate mate. Without Abramovich's money you won't be where you are right now, you were nothing before he came. Every clubs also need money to rebuild and Chelsea had that period.

I think apart from Redcafe every forum is shit, childish name calling and all that.

Their best player is injured. Their best striker is on his way out. They have 3 first team midfielders left in the squad. It's been a bizarre window for Chelsea. If we had a window like that Redcafe would blow up.

And now Conte is saying morata is still not at the required fitness level and will likely miss the community shield.

With Kante and Bakayokos arrival Matic wasn't likely to get in the team. We will see how good Morata is in the PL but his goals per game ratio in the La Liga and the CL is very good.

Yeah now that I think about it, it was a pretty good deal for both the clubs. That is, if they get a replacement in. Bakayoko will take time adjusting, so that leaves them barebones in midfield. Also Costa is simply much better than Morata right now. Maybe Morata will get better than him one day, maybe he won't. Right now, Morata from Costa is a downgrade.

We've seen how the ship was sinking the previous season, and how they made a meal out of last season, so anything can happen. You can have the best players yet the worst results, that's the beauty of football.

Quite pleasing seeing them play TBH from time to time, Hazard is a monster. But we've managed to beat them fair and square.

They will be our main challenger as far as I am concerned.

Was just on there and couldn't get off it quick enough. (The formatting for some reason made every sentence scroll all the way across the screen). There seems to be real mixed reaction to Matic joining us which is to be expected but a lot of worry and near panic that the squad is smaller and threadbare as it stands.

Conte saying Moratas not fit enough or something to that effect-and people say Jose/LVG throw players under a bus. Jesus.

Yeah, I've just come off there and there are a number certainly unhappy about our squad size. I think 17 squad members sold or loaned and just 4 in.
The feeling over Matic is we don't currently have any cover and we have sold him to our rivals.

I think we will get the cover before the window closes.

Drinkwater in for Matic is laughable. Enjoy finishing outside of the TOP 4

The Caf would have crashed by now if we'd had the summer Chelsea have had so far.

Chelsea's season is going to hinge greatly upon Morata's ability to replace Costa. If Morata struggles to adapt then I do not see Chelsea regaining their title.

They won't retain it anyway, last season was somewhat fortuitous for them, no Europe for them, time of transition for the 2 Manchester sides and Conte was inheriting a team that had won the league 12 months earlier so despite that poor second season under Jose they were still better placed than most. I don't actually think many Chelsea fans expect them to win the league next season either

In a good or bad way? Never know how to read posts like this because imo they've not had a great summer

It's been bad for them. They've sold a very good talent in Ake, they've fecked off their best striker without getting a replacement in and tbf to Morata, it'll be a while before he gets close to that level, their best player will miss quite a lot of the season, they've sold Matic to a rival etc etc.

Yet that's not what is happening. Drinkwater or whoever is a replacement for Chalobah. Bakayoko is Matic's replacement.
Why are Chelsea signing players as replacements though? Surely with your squad size you should be looking to add numbers. Or was that the intention but the crazy market has made it difficult? There is still another month in the transfer window but I don't know if you'll sign enough in that time.

As for finishing outside the top 4, well I guess you'd have more recent experience of that, I couldn't comment.

You finished tenth two seasons ago.

And United missed out on top 4 in 13/14, 15/16 and 16/17. If you want to make fun of Chelsea, using top 4 might not be ideal.

I wasn't making fun of Chelsea.

A Chelsea fan was suggesting he couldn't comment on finishing outside the top 4 as if it had been so long he couldn't remember what it was like. I was pointing out it was only two seasons ago they finished as low as tenth. If he can't remember as far back as May 2016 he has serious memory issues.

Read the thread properly.

He specifically said 'recent' though. United missed out on top 4 more recently than Chelsea. It's kinda semantics though.

True, but you're downplaying their achievement a little bit. Conte put together an incredibly robust and inefficient team, and while I think they'll fall short of regaining the title, I still anticipate them to push for it and finish in the top three. As long as they have Kante screening the back four and a motivated Hazard in attack, they'll remain a formidable team.

It was noticeable that the balance in MF around Kante wasn't ideal. Matic did a better job defensively than Cesc of course but thats not saying much. He was exposed too many times or simply bypassed. Conte needs a more dynamic and flexible MF.

Plus we'd be mad to turn down £40m for him. Very, very good business. !!!! :)
