Chelsea 2017/18 thread - FA Cup Champs, League chumps

Loving how the english club dominance is slowly coming back. I would love to see Tottenham beat madrid.

Aye. A rising tide really lifts all boats.

If the league wants to attract the best talents we need a strong set of teams doing well in Europe. Not just one or two.

True that. Last season was a disgrace for english clubs in champions league. I, for one, am glad that arsenal are not in this year's champions league. They were just there to fill the numbers. English league could do well without them for a season or two in the champions league.

Arsenal are usually so irrelevant in the CL, probably really good for the league that they aren't embarrassing themselves

They're generally pretty good against Spanish teams. They're looking very good at the moment.

Not seen a more cowardly team than Atletico.
How can such a talented team be so negative?

Mourinho's Chelsea - 2015 pre-QF vs 10 man PSG at the bridge was probably worse.

But Athleti do this regularly so you are right. Also, over the last 3-4 seasons they have not really been that shoe-string budget fairy tale team they were once held up to be.

They aren't all that talented, they get by on their aggression and work-rate, sadly for them those are also staples of the Chelsea game and they are even more aggressive.

I suppose I'd like to see the English clubs back at the top of European football but only if United were there as well.

I do sense a shift in power in European football developing. With PSG spending so much, Barca and Madrid post Messi and Ronaldo and the quality of managers in the premier league. The start of a new cycle seems inevitable imo.

We shall see.

Atletico’s demise continuing?

I’m glad Chelsea won, need them at their best to knock off City at the weekend

Think that's a bit harsh. They were 3rd last season and got to the semi finals of the Champions League. Not a terrible season. This season they're 2nd with an unbeaten record in the league. As long as they beat Roma at home they should be in a strong position to go through.

I don't agree they aren't that talented. Carrasco, Griezmann, Koke, Saul. Those are four tip players and they have other decent players.

It would be good for the Champions League if Roma could knock them out for two reasons mainly Atletico are the most negative awful team to watch and none of the commentators seem capable of pronouncing their name properly, almost as irritating as Inter generally getting called Inter Milan by these buffoons.

You can certainly see the start of a new cycle, Spanish and German club football down, Italy and England on the up of course with PSG emerging as a major force. Serie A in my opinion is the best football to watch at present loads of goals and action. Roma and Napoli in particular are great to watch.

I think people overlook them in title conversations because of that Burnley game. I thought they'd struggle this season but recent few weeks have shown that they are still great and have a great chance to win trophies this season.

What is fabreags doing at the right hand side of the front three.

He didn't play there, he was in a 3 in midfield, 3-5-2. He was actually the one that sat out of the 3 quite a lot too due to kante playing more advanced.

Indeed. They have a very strong team. Last night they put in one of the best performances from an English team in Europe over the last few years.

Yeah, it was possibly the first time in 3 years that an English team faced a top team from abroad who cared and outplayed them (City v Barca last year was a bit of a dead rubber to Barca).

The City vs Chelsea game is set up to be a real humdinger isn't it?
I'd be very surprised if we beat them. They have and extra days rest and preparation. We have only one training session to prepare for what's arguably the toughest side in the league.

Like Mourinho and Conte both said last night, it's no wonder English sides have struggled in Europe in recent years. The people deciding the fixtures don't help at all. Both Chelsea and United should be playing on Sunday rather than Saturday.

True mate, although i'd have you guys down to be pretty well prepared for this game with or without the extra day. Both teams look very strong and as a neutral (and possibly attending the game!) i'm hoping for a high scoring draw!

Gonna be a great 3-horse race in the league, as Chelsea are truly back in form. Fantastic performance yesterday.

If were diligent defensively I still feel we can do it, Hazard is just such a difference.

Tibo
Azpi Christensen Rudiger
Zappacosta Bakayoko Kante Alonso
fabregas
Morata Hazard

If fitness permits that.

Wont count out tottenham yet. They have been the most consistant side and are unchanged. They will be in the race as well.

And as a arsenal fan you wont have the opinion but they are good.

Bakayoko's casual flick before Batshuayi's goal was cool. (at 0:08)

The fecking overreaction to their win last night. People calling in to radio stations saying it was the best away performance ever, that Chelsea have the best squad in the league.. it’s embarrassing.

Thats a little OTT. But I have seen Spanish based English reporters saying it was the best away performance from an english side against a Spanish team in years.

It is more embarrassing to see people refusing to acknowledge just how outstanding a performance and result that was, they didnt just beat Atletico, they dominated them in their own backyard. An Ateltico who havent lost at home in Europe in so long, and not conceded in X amount of games. they were schooled

The Spanish media are the queens of over reaction and that is saying something when I'm judging them against the English media. It was a commanding performance but nothing near the best performance of an English team.

Didn't the dippers maul Real Madrid 5-0 some time in the last 10 years. Also, I think the best away performance by an English team in Europe is Arsenal's 5-1 win at San Siro hands down.

That Arsenal game was about 15 years ago and Liverpool battering Milan was not away.

I can't think of too many great wins against top sides away in Europe in recent times.
