Manchester City 17/18 discussion | "If you're here for the Champions clap your hands" (#6505)

Way ahead of us.
The sad truth and I think that's the real reason Mourinho has been irritable these past few weeks.

That is what long term planning gets you. City have been planning for Pep years before his arrival. Billions spent on infrastructure and buying clubs all over the world. Billion spent on the right players and coach. It is really hard to see them play football which we can only dream off away from home.

Gotta be delusional to believe in this. Their transfer policy has been mediocre as usual. None of their youth players get a chance.

The only reason they are actually playing this well is because they finally got one of the best managers in the world.

Pellegrini got city to a CL semi final and he is average compared to Guardiola.

They are a CL win away from being more relevant than us in the current narrative of football. On history, it would take them decades to compete but football is very much a ‘today is all that matters’ sport now, more so than it has been in the past with the increased coverage and social media.
They're really not. City won't suddenly become a more popular club than us with a CL win.

Theyre probably the best equipped team for a genuine crack at the quadruple I've ever seen.

Stacked all over the pitch.
Can't see that happening. They look toothless without KDB. His form will dip and they will struggle then. But I feel league is there's to loose now. Can't say anything about CL

That has nothing to do with their current succes, there's no player that came from their academy in the current squad.

Spending Billions got them her, and getting a good manager. that's about it. the same model madrid followed in the last decade, the PSG is following right now and the barça team even when they had Messi in their side.

Edit: Chelsea also.

So let's not act like they're the best run club in the world with their "long term planning".
But this is part of their long term planning. When even United players send their children to City's academy, you know they are doing it right. They also now have feeder clubs all over the world, which will allow them to give their youngsters more game time in competitive leagues. They have got no academy players in their first team now but it is only a matter of time.

That's strange. One possible CL win won't make them more relevant than us all of a sudden.

That first part is only true if we aren't competitive. As long as we make sure we're consistently up there as well, a sustained period of City success wouldn't automatically make them more relevant. If we're struggling at the same time that changes things though.

Yeah. Only matter of time. Maybe next year.
Come on. There's no long term planning besides Pep, it's just throwing money around. Chelsea has youngster all over Europe and not one of them is playing for the 1st team.

Well that’s also true I should have added that in. However, there’s only so long we can come keep fumbling around before we just disappear into the background, relatively speaking of course. This season, on paper is looking great with a good chance of challenging or even winning the title but the reality feels somewhat different. Just not getting positive vibes from watching us or from listening and observing Mourinho. Let’s see.

Honestly Napoli were doing fine before ghoulam's injury. City have been good no doubt but lady luck have been shining for them and that's what worries me.

It was nothing to do with the injury, Napoli ran themselves into the ground trying that press and all it took was them tiring a little for us to be able to play though them on the counter. They are not the first team that looked impressive against us until they tired. At the end of the game you could see Napoli had absolutely nothing in the tank while City were relatively fresh.

Getting in Txiki was not a coincidence. Guardiola himself said he is here because of him. Now they have invested in Guardiola's brother's club as well. This is all part of a long term plan.

They starting to concede goals.

Still don't get why teams aren't overloading on Delph. I hope we stick Fellaini on him when we meet.

Delph has been exceptional defensively. As a fullback he's far better defensively than Walker, Danilo or even Mendy. Never thought I'd say those words but even today it was far easier for Napoli to play in behind Danilo then Delph. Chelsea also found it easier to get in behind Walker.

2 more goals conceded. Maybe having a 32 year old DM play every single game is starting to show? Im not just saying that because its City, Matic is 3 years younger and I have the same concerns about him.

Yeah. Only matter of time. Maybe next year.

Such amazing long term planning from city, trophy less last season so they spunk £120m+ on fullbacks! Gotta give credit for buying a £43m benchwarmer.

You've nailed it perfectly, they are doing exactly what PSG are doing. Spending so much money that they have the best team.

Even more delusion...Guardiola left his boyhood club after 4 years of management. And you think he'll stay at City for more than a few years?

Bayern fans thought he'd never leave Bavaria for City and now City fans thinking he's going to be there longterm - it'll all end in tears

Makes a difference having to play Napoli away over Benfica at home though. This Napoli team have scored 43 goals this season already. Great going forward just tired towards the end because of the pressing and running.

Wow. I know they are good, but this thread is still something else.

Quadruple?

This year's threads about city have been something else.

They spent twice what we did during these last 10 years, this is without talking about salaries. it's pretty normal that they are where they are right now. in addition to that, we lost our manager 4 years ago and we had to change our ways and rebuild, so it's normal that we're where we are.

Quadruple, long term planning when they have spent 1.5B Euros since 2008 -up there with PSG as the biggest spenders in europe-, best ever team in the PL when they have won nothing yet and after 10 games in the premier league ... Rawk inversed

@Manchester Dan
Yeah but you conceded 4 v Stoke and West Brom as well though?
Gundogan is vital for you, if you get a tune out of him then its all for nothing. Time will tell I suppose.

I don't think he'll stay long as he's a very demanding coach and has said himself eventually players will get sick of him, as he will with them, but then again Pep has power at City, as Fergie did at United, were he gets to call all the shots, which may make him stay as he can dispose anyone he wants were as at BM and Barcelona he couldn't due to politics. His wife and him also take education seriously and they'd want their kids to do their A levels, etc here, which someone of them are coming to age.

They are spending their money better than us and in fact most clubs. You have to be pretty blinkered to not see that.
Long term planning isn't the same as throwing billions around you know.

And it's sheik money too but that's another story.

Bayern fans thought he'd never leave Bavaria for City and now City fans thinking he's going to be there longterm - it'll all end in tears
Have to kind of wonder where would he go? PSG maybe or a stint as the Spain manager or maybe back to Barca.

Seeing as your comparing. I believe Cities squad cost £690m, Uniteds £650m according to transfermarkt.... You'll also find both clubs are spending relatively the same on salaries...

http://www.irishmirror.ie/sport/soccer/soccer-news/manchester-united-second-most-expensive-9609201 - In fact in January United were spending £80m a year more.

I think he said recently he'd like to try Spain but the situation there is strange. I think he'll do one more job after City before finishing at Girona as he intends to retire young.

You should have a little game of 'player turnover' and the reason why they've had to spend so much to get where they've gotten thus far.

Throwing money at problems until something sticks is not some miraculous long-term strategy.

Gundogan is vital for you, if you get a tune out of him then its all for nothing. Time will tell I suppose.

Both the Stoke goals were massive deflections and yeah 2 sloppy goals against West Brom, but whilst we're scoring we can afford to let the odd couple in bad I doubt we'll play against a team with better movement than Napoli in the prem

Whether you want to admit or not, that injury had a huge impact. Ghoulum was literally bombing forward and pushing your attackers back. Napoli lost their rhythm and you got a lucky break. The fact that Napoli are defensively crap helped you even more.

Don‘t think so! Bayern Munich looked spectacularly good under Guardiola, but the longer the season went, the worse their style of play got. In february, march i expect a huge drop in performance level from them, when it‘s crunchtime, Guardiola will bottle it without Messi, just like a leopard doesn‘t change its spot.
Last season he looked completely out of his depth against Monaco, he‘s too stubborn to change and win something big in Europe again, IMO.

Mourinho‘s team will be ready and clever when the big time arrives, but other teams can play too, especially Bayern Mumich under Heynckes, who sets up similarly, the first objective is to defend, that‘s the best chance to win something big. Guardiola to this day fails to comprehend that.

the link you provided is old, January 2017, we sold players in January when city didn't.

And i am talking about spending, not current squad cost.

When you spend 1.5 billions, you're bound to get some transfers right.

Here you go, some stats i did a few weeks ago, the source is transferMarkt, so the same source you're using for the teams' costs.

City's net spend is almost twice ours, it's almost equal to Ours + Chelsea + liverpool's spending from 2008 to now.

City net spend is: 1.12 B Euros
TOP 5 net spend is: 1.65 B Euros

Let that sink in.
