The Active Shooter Thread

I find the fact that school's actively drill those sort of scenarios bizarre. The logic is just wrong. Lets make sure all kids know exactly what to do in chase of a shooting... yet not a single thing done to reduce the likelyhood of an actual shooting happening. It's like building a wooden fireplace and teaching the kids how to put out the fire when it eventually escapes, instead of just building it out of stone.

I've just been reading some stuff where former PM Cameron calls Islamic State a 'death cult'.

Maybe he should have applied that to the US as well.

Not gonna lie, that brought a tear to my eye.

I get the impression that those keenest to maintain their gun-owning rights would also be willing to give up and sacrifice everything for their nation - to leave home and family in order to fight, to risk being taken prisoner, held in a tiny cell and tortured, to accept the danger of losing life or limb. They'll give up everything except their rifle.:wenger:

It's disgusting that she thought "Why is my black son being the one on the front?" instead of just 'Why my son?". Especially when 3 other kids were with him.

Why think of your child's race in a situation like this? If the kids of other races were picked, it would be fine? Apart from the fact that her kid wouldn't be picked? Just another situation where people in the US think exclusively in terms of race. Disgusting.

Really? That's your takeaway?

Assault Weapons Not Protected by Second Amendment, Federal Appeals Court Rules
by THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland's ban on 45 kinds of assault weapons and its 10-round limit on gun magazines were upheld Tuesday by a federal appeals court in a decision that met with a strongly worded dissent.

In a 10-4 ruling, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia, said the guns banned under Maryland's law aren't protected by the Second Amendment.

"Put simply, we have no power to extend Second Amendment protections to weapons of war," Judge Robert King wrote for the court, adding that the Supreme Court's decision in District of Columbia v. Heller explicitly excluded such coverage.

Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh, who led the push for the law in 2013 as a state senator, said it's "unthinkable that these weapons of war, weapons that caused the carnage in Newtown and in other communities across the country, would be protected by the Second Amendment."

American talk a lot about freedom. "Land of the free", "leaders of the free world" etc. etc.

Yet they tolerate a society where kind, brave and brilliant 10 year olds are forced to genuinely contemplate the sort of decisions that should be reserved for soldiers and law enforcement professionals.

People talk about it being a minority, about how safe the US is for the most part, but across that country there are 10 year olds like him going to school at such an impressionable age and having their innocence eroded by active shooter drills and what if scenarios. This isn't happening in a war zone, or stem from a genuine need to prepare them for unavoidable conflict - it's happening so that some Americans can continue with their hobby and so that others can line their pockets.

Those phrases ought to be trademarked. Jingoistic bullshit.

If you look at Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, it clearly fails at the most basic level for an increasingly lot of people but is covered up by those feel-good phrases.

Without knowing the background to their experiences its hard to know if she was justified or not in assuming negative treatment due to the colour of his skin but she's giving her honest reaction to the news that her son was going to be a human shield. it turned out to be wrong anyway.

You probably should rather be asking yourself what happens in society that causes any parent to first come to that conclusion.

Yep.

Not everyone has the privilege of not having to be conscious about their race.

Excellent response. I can't believe the initial post there.

I know its not strictly relevant to this thread but I was listening to startalk with Neil De Grasse Tyson a few weeks ago. I can't remember exactly how this came up but he was talking about the first time he ever realised that society perceived him differently from how he thought they did.

He had a childhood job to make some money and when he was a teen, he was obsessed with those pocket watches. So he worked, saved and then bought one from macey's I think. It stopped working so he took it back to Macey's to get it fixed. The guy took a look at it, at him and told him he wouldn't fix it as he'd clearly stolen the watch. And Tyson was sayingt he was racking his brain to find a reason why this guy would think he'd stolen the watch. Maybe a watch had been stolen from that macey's store that day, maybe something else had happened. Anything to not think that this guy saw a black teen with something costing a little money and automatically assuming that he'd stolen it.

Until that point, he said he'd never realised that society could or would see him in that way.

Horrible horrible shooting. I think unfortunately it will need a sea change in American politics to bring up real change, perhaps a generational shift before things are really done.

That’s what’s so crazy about it. They’re so fecking paranoid about allowing terror into their country from overseas but completely blind to the terror being spread throughout their schools by their own citizens.

And all because a bunch of red-necks don’t want it to be made even a tiny bit more difficult to shoot stuff up, whenever the mood takes them.

I think 7 or 8 a month for a few months TBH. The NRA and obstinate GOP politicians just deflect every time a shooting occurs.

7 or 8 deaths per month? They're already way more frequent than that.

2,021 people have been killed by guns in the 51 days of 2018 so far.

That includes 74 children under 11, and 387 teens.

Meh... Unless you mean 7-8 a month in the same shooting, this is already happening.
1 person each dying in 7 states in a month, is hardly going to make headlines in the state news leave alone nationally

Disgusting? It's a normal reaction from someone who lives in a society where, despite the rhetoric to the contrary, black lives are valued less than white lives.

The main focus should be on the kid anyways, and, as someone has pointed out already, the absurdity of the situation where a kid like him is required to be so noble, instead of doing normal kid stuff.

I've been reading about the movement that was started by the shooting survivors. It's really inspiring to see these kids taking matters into their own hands. I hope they succeed in their goals.

I hope so too but unless they grow up and become senators and take action, I dont see these Rep senators listening to any of them. But its good though, while there is so much awareness being raised, the Republicans are getting a bad rep throughout the country and its being well documented that they are getting money from the NRA.

I wonder how much backlash there would be from gun owners.
I wonder how much backlash they faced when they wrote things like slavery out of the constitution. You got to do it. Not everyone is ever going to fully support an idea. They are in the minority. Its for the betterment of the country. At the end of the day, you're right to own a gun isnt more important than your next door neighbor losing their kid and not being able to see them every again!

You won't believe it, some Americans are giving these kids stick online.

As has been shown in the other thread Trump's son is RT'ing stuff discrediting them.
