The Bortles deal makes a lot of sense. Not a long-term deal, 18 million a year and low guaranteed money. In the short term it means they can franchise tag Allen Robinson without cutting anyone and if he sucks next year they can cut him with little cap penalty, draft a rookie and focus on keeping their strong defence.
People keep saying this means a longer time for Jags to research a QB. But we've seen with the Seahawks that keeping an elite defense under contract is hard as feck. Wasting precious time with this scrub.
All the more reason not to overspend on someone like Cousins who'd basically guarantee that the defense couldn't be kept. Smart thing would be to try and draft someone in round 3 or 4 to compete with Bortles and if he sucks then cut Bortles next year and move on. It's not like Bortles stopped them from achieving anything this year, they got to the AFCCG and with better playcalling while leading they could have beaten the Patriots. Still can't believe they knelt with over 50 seconds left on the clock in the second quarter.
True - but they'll always be playing with Fire when starting Bortles. Better off going for broke for 1/2 years with Cousins. That's just me though.
I agree. That D is ready to win now & with a better QB than Bortles they're my favourites in the AFC. Bortles is a decent QB at best, as well as he did in the playoffs last year, I don't trust him to win a SB.
Will be interesting to see how they do in the upcoming year & how Bortles plays with the added pressure.
Problem is they'd likely need to shift a couple of their big earners to make room for Cousins and it basically ensures a short window for their defense. With a top D and a great RB, Bortles should be enough.
Wonderful example, the Jags and Hawks even play the same scheme on defense! Jacksonville does have one of the best (if not the best) collections of talent and raw athletic ability in the entire league. Having a guy like Bortles that is so painfully difficult to watch in game film that makes more money than Bouye, Ramsey, Smith, Jack, Fournette and Linder is going to cause problems for team morale. These guys ball out every Sunday and Bortles is taking that cash and wasting their time.
It's a real shame that this team may go without a Super Bowl win over the next 5 or so years because of Bortles. Coughlin and Marrone are supposed to be the no-nonsense kind of guys, everyone thought they'd clean this mess up, but bringing back Bortles is head-scratching. Keenum, Kap, Bradford, Jimmy G - they'd all take this team to the next level. If there's a team that has one guy that's holding them back, just one guy, it's Bortles. He's inconsistent, has weird mechanics, often doesn't step up in the pocket, and sometimes he just completely misses receivers. The second half of the AFCCG was tough to watch, Bortles could've won that game so many times.
But he isn't. Absolutely abysmal. Even when he was playing well in the playoffs he completely botched the ending. Fortunately, the majority of their great D-line, Telvin Smith and the two top corners are signed for 3 more years. Jags have got to draft a QB in one of the middle rounds or try to sign one of the lower echelon FA QBs like McCown. Too much dead cap money if they wanted to cut Bortles the during the next 2 years. Really puzzling decision by Jacksonville.
I have to agree that the Jags are making a mistake here. They needed to be ruthless but turned up toothless.

Bortles is better than McCown, McCown has never thrown for 3000 yards in a season and hit his career high for touchdowns this year at 18. Hell Bortles is 8 touchdowns away from tying McCown's career stats with far fewer games and fewer turnovers and 1% less completion percentage.
The guy is currently 17th in terms of pay for QBs next year, won't be surprising if he's outside the top 20. The Jags know they can win with him, they beat the Steelers twice and came close against the Patriots and Bortles wasn't the reason they lost that game. Why release him and either trade up or gamble that there will still be a starting level qb available with the 29th pick (next qb taken last year was DeShone Kizer... Yikes) or gamble on one of the freeagents turning out to be Garrapolo instead of Glennon.
How was Bortles not the reason for the loss? He missed receivers all over the place and his coaches had so little trust in him, they actually kneeled before the half, with more than 50 seconds left on the clock.
Bortles completed 23/36 for 293 yards and a TD, Brady completed 26/38 for 290 yards and 2 TDs. Both had no interceptions. Bortles was fine that game If the coaches chose to kneel rather than try anything (even a run just to see what happened) then that's on them, not Bortles who at that point was 13 of 15 for 155 yards and a TD. No team had taken a knee with more than 50 seconds left, including the Browns. That's 100% on the coaches.

Just think he gets too much stick. Not saying Bortles is total trash. Or that the coaches aren’t to blame.
Anyway the Pats game isn’t the best example anyway.
Overall though it is clear that the team had to run a very limited offence to scrape ahead because of Bortles and not just the coaches. I think they’d have been a significantly better team with a better chance of SB victory had they had Cousins, for example, over Bortles.

Wow, a second and fourth round pick for Marcus Peters. Chiefs been mugged by the Rams, I wish Eagles would have gone in for him.

For that we should have picked him up. Imagine him at the Packers. We’d have been Super Bowl favorites.
Marcus Peters became public enemy #1 in KC, he's had his fair share of off the field and anger issues. Really rare to see such a productive player drafted in the 1st round only 3 years ago already be jettisoned from the team. A #18 overall pick is supposed to be a team's anchor for years, yet they seemingly couldn't stand the guy. Now KC's defense is in free fall with plenty of older players.
The Rams got a great player, let's see if McVay can whip him into shape. Trumaine Johnson almost guaranteed to be leaving now, but imagine of they could bring him back, especially considering that Peters counts as very little against the cap.
Can Peters play on the defensive line, too? Or fill in across the offensive line when they all get banged up? Or take over for Philbin or McCarthy? Rodgers gotta get paid big time to put up with that front office and coaching staff.Shit, didnt know that. Thought he was 26-27.
Actually, they got a good young CB in Kendall Fuller and a 3d round pick, people need to think about the Alex Smith trade.
The addition of Fuller after the loss of Peters isn't going to resuscitate this defense. They were absolutely terrible last year in all aspects. Some of that is the scheme they play, I'll admit, but their defensive line is fairly flimsy, they have an ageing, big-money Tamba Hali who will probably be cut this offseason, and plenty of questions in the secondary. Justin Houston is making a ton of money and he hasn't been as effective as they'd like. I'm curious to see how Ragland develops and if he can be the leader of the linebackers.
I love Mahomes, though. He's got all the talent in the world to be a star in this league.
Our D-Line is actually quite underrated. Clark and Daniels are great players.
Marcus Peters is a top corner back, he may have had his problems but Rams got a great trade for him. A second rounder and a fourth and they got a sixth rounder back as well. I would have loved him at philly especially as cornerback was a weakness for us. Him and Sidney Jones (if comes back 100%) as corners would have enhanced our defence.

Kind of curious as to what went on behind the scenes with Marcus Peters now the details of the trade have come out. The Chiefs are trading him to the Rams along with a sixth round pick in exchange for a fourth and a second next year, which considering how good he can be is nowhere near enough. The more interesting part is that the Chiefs did shop him to every team and that was the best offer, so it's not a right place, right time kind of thing. The 49ers apparently made a similar bid and another team was willing to give up a single mid-round pick. I know he's had some attitude problems and the flag throwing stuff was inexcusable but that's still really surprising, must be some stuff we don't know about.

He lost his shit on the field at least a couple of times, he had an altercation with a coach and the owner was allegedly unhappy with the way Peters acted during the anthems. For the last one I have no idea if he did anything else than kneeling.
Still surprising that it leads to that little interest in any team. There are worse players for loss of discipline (not many I'll admit), I doubt most teams give a toss about the kneeling and his level of play was still pretty high.
Not really, he had red flags in college otherwise he would have been drafted higher and I forgot that he allegedly insulted Chiefs's fans.

Edit: He is acting like scouts and teams feared he might act prior to the draft, for many teams this is the confirmation that they did well not having him on their draft board.

I wouldn’t go that far. I don’t remember the exact number, but with Rodgers injured GB would only be favored over 1-3 teams.
