ice has only existed for 15 years. im confident the fbi can slash water bottles and detain 1 year olds and break up families too
do you think people should be sent to another country away from their friends and family for speeding? i sped on my way home from work today. good thing i was born here so theres no threat of me being shipped off to a country i havent been to since i was a child where i know no one and dont speak the language.
The department may have been brought under the ICE banner 14 years ago but they same job used to be done by other agencies. The INS used to do criminal investigative, detention and deportations.

Did I say they should be? My comment was in relation to people doing things to draw attention to themselves when they’re in a position of doing something illegally. No license? Don’t drive like a jackass.

My own personal beliefs are that anyone that comes to this country and is making themselves a part of society and being productive, even if that’s only within their own community, should be allowed to stay. If anyone that came here illegally ends up committing crimes, or getting involved in anything that is suspect, I see no reason they should be allowed to stay. I don’t think minor offenses should warrant extreme circumstances, but misdemeanor level stuff and above. They should still be treated like people though, regardless.
You get into a gray area there though. Driving without a licence and insurance is a misdemeanor in most States. Only 12 States grant driving licenses to illegal immigrants.
Which leads into more issues with consistencies and differing jurisdictions/states etc. There’s also misdemeanors here that we don’t arrest for. Well, it’s a complaint to be filed with the DA, but they won’t be taken to jail for it.
She was released on bail. The black police officer involved was charged with negligent homicide immediately after the crash.

If the officer has been charged, why haven’t her charges been dropped?
If she’s released on bail then she can still be called to trial and be subject to being found guilty and classed as a criminal, plus having to pay for legal fees, taking time off work while grieving etc.
Secondly, the race of the police officer isn’t really a concern because the justice system is institutionally racist, so the cop’s race isn’t actually important. We already know how the justice system treats people of colour who have been charged.
Also, the rate at which police officers are convicted is incredibly low, though since this one is black maybe he will be convicted.
Her charges have not been dropped because she broke the law. The driver should also be charged as well because there were more people in teh car than seats.
Well it’s in a thread called cops doing a bad job. In this instance it was an off duty cop being a dickhead in his own car, and he was charged and placed on administrative leave. So the cops actually did a good job.
Accident investigation discovered the child that died was not secured in a child seat, so the adult responsible was charged. Not sure what you expect law enforcement to do. They don’t write the law, and in this instance it’s a very good and valid law they are enforcing.
So you tell me what would be the “okay” thing to do?
Not arrest the mother whose child was just killed by a cop
He was an off duty cop. She was absolutely neglectful, the child seat was on the center consul in the front. No one else died in the accident so she definitely contributed to the death of the child.

After reading the article it's clear both were idiotic and both should rightfully have been arrested and charged.
Agreed. The Cop should get a prison sentence. Just the fact she has been charged and she has to live with the fact she is partially responsible for her kids deaths is more than enough punishment. Hopefully nothing more than a small slap on the wrist for her.
Btw, if you read the case summary, it is quite likely that his dog might have survived if they hadn't arrested him. Also, *he* had made the call to *non-emergency* police about his neighbour harassing his girlfriend.
Also after a reading a bit about cases like this, it is obvious that many many laws exist simply because they are useful pretexts for arrests.
Not really. What about pepper spray or a taser? How would a cop in another country that didn't csarry a firearm react? There are a lot of options between shooting the dog and getting mauled to death.
Too many gun happy cretins in law enforcement. And the law generally makes them immune to punishment.
Cops here are a different breed for sure. Having said that Americans in general are a different breed. I worked with an ex-cop who shot three dogs during his twelve years in the force. He thought that was perfectly normal.
I genuinely feel they think they are there to arrest, rather than to diffuse and help the situation.
They are far too many that are just authoritarian nutjobs. Best just to be fairly compliant and say yes sir no sir.

If I behaved like I used to in the UK I would have been shot by a cop or in a road rage incident within a month of getting here.

I dont know. But I think it's reasonable to think shooting dogs is over the top. Most police around here have non lethal weapons in addition to their gun.
If the dog was running straight towards me and it‘s not a Chihuahua I‘d certainely feel threatened too. If that‘s what triggers action in US police then...
As I said, there other options besides shooting it with a gun.
Agreed but there is not much time if the dog is already running so it‘s more a question of what can be a viable option if the pepper spray is somewhere in a bag in the trousers closed with a zip then it cant be considered surely.

Most of the videos I’ve seen of cops shooting dogs they aren’t even that close/threatening. If a dog was going at you from 20 yards it would take a seriously cool mother fecker to draw and hit it before it was on them.
I think they see a dog, see a potential threat and just go to ‘shoot it’ a lot of the time, cutting out about 4 rational steps in between.
