I've been driving in US from 2006 and counting the year in India, it's been 11 years. I've been pulled over once I was driving, once when my friend was driving my car. What the feck have you been doing while driving Mike?
Personally, my experience with the cops have been very good. When I was pulled over, he almost let me go with a warning but then noticed I didn't have my insurance with me and my taillight was broken. He almost apologetically gave me a ticket but advised me to go to court and pay the fine of 40 dollars when my case comes up and assured there won't be any points added. Recently, I was involved in a minor bump and there were two women sitting on the car I bumped into. They promptly said both of them had whiplash injuries and their hips and head hurt like hell. Cop came to me and asked me to remain in my car and told me that he is going to insist that the paramedics come to the scene before filing any case. Promptly the women mentioned they didn't want paramedics and the officer let me go.
I think sort of confirms that the cops probably judge by the appearance of the affected. Non-threatening Asian guy in late 30's who appears nervous while talking to a cop means he's not a danger..
