Cristiano Ronaldo - performances 2017/18

Thought it was his best national team game of his career, but the "we only rate players by team results" crew which happen to be Cristiano Ronaldo supporters should think otherwise. ;)

It’s come to the point that some of the genuine great players of the past 30 years aren’t even fit to LACE he or Messi’s boots.

What he’s doing now and has been doing for several years makes what guys like Henry, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho etc did look no more than kid stuff really.

I agree, which is why its baffling why some wouldn't want him back. Even if it was for a year or two...the magic would be incredible.
This.

I wish we were linked to Ronnie and not Bale:(

I don’t watch as much Spanish football as I used to but even so, last night was the best all round performance I’ve seen from Ronaldo in a good few years.

Even ignoring the goals, his touch, link up play and carrying the ball were at levels that reminded by of his early years as a genuine winger.

Just have to take your hat off to him.

My bad. I agree with that. It's the part about him being responsible and not throwing a hissy fit when his 21 strike partner messes up that I disagree with.
He actually didnt throw one when he messed up, twice. He only done it when defenders knocked up long aimless balls to nowhere from what i recall

IF Ronaldo came back to Utd for a year or two he would light up the place,he is a freak or a force of nature unlike any other, the reasons for not wanting him back are flimsy to say the least,if any player of any generation is a true genius then its absolutely Ronaldo!

To be fair, Portugal were thought of a nothing international team pre-Ronaldo, now they are thought of as a team that can challenge for cups. Its not ALL down to Ronaldo, but they definately got a ton better when he came on the scene. Even with Figo they were though of as a team to make up the numbers.

That's not true at all, we weren't a team to make up numbers. Portugal made an amazing Euro 2000, losing by a golden penalty goal in the semis to the best team in the world at the time. We could have won that game easily (we even scored first) and been to the final.

In 2002 we were a disgrace but that was a massive and totally unexpected failure, a bit like France. Our squad was great and certainly not there to make numbers.

In 2004 we were good, with Ronaldo, but still below his peak and not yet our most important player of course.

In 2016 Portugal wasn't thought of as a team that could compete for the tournament. Remember we had 3 draws in the group stage, and any way Ronaldo didn't play the final.

I don't think we're better now than 10-15 years ago just because of Ronaldo, unfortunately a single player can't change that much. We were stronger in 2000-2006.

I remember telling a friend in 2007 that Ronaldo was now the better player - how he laughed :wenger:

I don’t agree at all. The squad now is not strong compared to the lot in 2000 for example. Take a look at the players in this squad https://www.national-football-teams.com/country/148/2000/Portugal.html

Obviously Figo, Rui Costa (one of my all time favorites), Fernando Couto (one of the most highly regarded CBs at the time), pinto, Sosa, rui Jorge, Nuno Gomes and so on. Fabulous squad. Having a peak Ronaldo in that squad and the possibilities would have been immense

Remember when Rooney was better
ALot of the Caf back then were delighted with their new Golden Boytoy and since he was English it only added to his status. Ronaldo at that point was still learning whilst Rooney came off Euro 2004, you should have seen the caf back then.
Only a select few (me) on here saw the clear difference in potential and knew what Ronaldo could become. I fought a lonely war against an Army of John Snow's, and I win. Again.

That performance last night will go down in history. One of the best performances I've seen from Ronaldo in a Portugal shirt.

Oii, I was very much on the Ronaldo side since day 1, in fact I suggested we sign him before that friendly.

Sweden 2013 > Netherlands 2012 > Spain 2018. 3 best NT performances of his career.

Don't think anyone rates players solely on team results, that's nonsensical. But they matter too. I'm sure if we go on to be knocked out in the group stages or if we go to the semis his performances won't be looked at the same way.

I think SAF sees himself in him as a player. Probably not the greatest gifted but will always make sure to come out as the best anyhow.

No wonder the great man loves him as his son.

I find it absolutely mind boggling when people talk about Ronaldo like this.

In the early years of his career, it was blindingly obvious that he was a supremely gifted player capable of doing things with the ball that other players could only dream of at speeds that most players could never hope to reach.

As he matured, he showed great acuity, refining his game towards efficiency rather than flair.

Ronaldo has an immense appetite for self improvement and shows great discipline in achieving his goals but if you think it’s unique in the football world, I think you’d be very surprised. There is plenty of players who will apply themselves as Ronaldo does, maybe not quite so overtly, and the fruits of their labour are just a hell of a lot thinner because they just don’t have the talent that Ronaldo was clearly blessed with.

Your post is completely out place in the Ronaldo thread, take it to the Jamie Vardy thread.

What a player. Ultimate Fine Wine footballer.

Just shows age can be so misleading in football. Look at the difference wirw Rooney.

I hope Portugal win it.

I wouldn't doubt it.

Although I differ in opinion with you in the Ronaldo vs Messi debate and I do think he is declining (but ready to fire it up for one more tournament for something he has not won yet).
But if he keeps doing amazing things during this world cup he truly could become the undisputed GOAT yes. Impressive what he did with 10 JR SMITH's as his teammates.

Remember when he was 4-1 down in Ballon d'ors and he said he would catch up? We laughed at him.
I have never seen anyone in life, not just sport with this much sheer will power. Unreal man.

I remember that meme with Messi and his four balon dors and him only one.

Like Jordan, certain sociopathic desire to win. Legend.

Put him in Brazil, Germany or France, and he wins the WC. I'm convinced of that.

 I always knew Ronaldo was on a different level. Always felt Rooney was overrated though. I didn't think he was technically near the very best players in the world. Ronaldos top level even at 18 was way higher. Rooney more consistently able to fit into team play and do his job effectively. Rooney ended up booting Ronaldo playing for Everton because he couldn't live with him.

Watch what he does as soon as he wins the free kick. As soon as he gets that free kick just look at how he goes into “alright it’s time” mode. Incredible. Incredible. The belief this guy has in himself and that he can achieve so much. Monster of a player. How lucky am I to have witnessed his career from start to finish.

How lucky are we to have been able to call him our own. He is the true player embodiment of Sir Alex Ferguson’s coaching school.
Well even Fergie said that this player was something else as he had never witnessed such will and drive to become the best player in the world. Many say that they want to be the best in the world but very few realise that dream. What is even more impressive is that at a young age Rooney and Messi had more natural talent . Ronaldo is a living proof that desire and determenation gets you anywhere you want .

Rooney never had more natural talent. He was just physically more developed.

Messi is an another matter, he is right there with Fat Ronaldo as the most talented player I have seen (Ronaldinho just behind them).

Rooney just physically more developed ? You must be joking. As a teenager Rooney was technically one of the finest players on the planet. Not more than Messi but on par with ronaldo

He was great, no doubt, but Ronaldo was always more talented. Rooney was just able to show it earlier because he was essentially fully developed (physically) when he was 16.

Those teams would probably win without him. You make it sound like he would win it for them.
I specifically refer to 'he', not 'they'. Ronaldo's WC chances are handicapped by playing for Portugal.

Yeah the supremely organized, reigning European champions are handicapped. Portugal looked just fine at stages in the Spain game and will breeze into the second round and be one of the teams everyone wants to avoid because recent history shows them as a team you just can’t beat in a knockout game.

Portugal look very good, they are the dark horses for the WC. Clearly not a poor team.

Rooney was never as talented as Ronaldo. His game was more mature when he was younger but Ronaldos highest level was always a level above Rooney. Rooney was overrated as a teenager because of how mature he was in his play for a teenager. He also never progressed technically.
