Wow think I'm going to explode from just having these four anthems tomorrow.

La Marseillaise v Himno Nacional Argentino and Orientales, la Patria o la Tumba v A Portuguesa.

To recap:

and

(Suarez had enough of listening to the long version after 3 and a half minutes.:D)

That will probably be more exciting than the actual game.

Anyway France 3-1 Argentina.

Uruguay 1-0 Portugal A.E.T.

La Marseillaise is epic compared to the rest. Pity the players rarely give a feck.

Suarez to do something daft. He's been acting out of character these past four years.

I think these 2 matches will be absolutely filthy. France are good on paper but not performing well. They will however be physically strong and try to push Messi around. The Argentines are only through because of Rojo's fluke wondergoal so they will just hunker down and win a war of attrition.

However I think the real fireworks will be Uruguay v Portugal. The characters, rivalries from domestic leagues and personal histories will make this like a horror movie. Don't let your kids stay up for it as I think it will be x rated with multiple sendings off on both sides.

Let the blood run free!

I'd like some red cards this time, and we haven't seen a bite in ages.

All unlikable teams.
This. I'm not expecting much good football from these teams. Hoping for other forms of entertainment instead.

Sorry I don't see the fascination with anthems. I wish African teams would have some Djembe style music, Latin countries Salsa/Samba etc, not these meaningless symphonies with imperialistic lyrics.

France should easily create 4-6 clear cut chances against that Argentina defence, they just need to take a few of those chances and they’ll be comfortable. Argentina can just hope Messi has an absolute stormer...

Portugal are as close to a one man team as it gets, Uruguay have a lot of quality and can see them being too strong a unit for Portugal

Although I want Argentina to win I see France and Uruguay progressing

OP can you change the title to the teams playing instead of their national anthems please? In no other forum let alone the most popular Football one in the world does a World Cup RO16 thread be this inactive:lol:.

The games can't come quick enough today. So excited for these knockouts to get underway. The real World Cup starts here.

Argentina's has the best ending of all anthems. The way it ramps up into a big finish makes it worth listening for the previous 20 seconds.

Finding these games really hard to call. France/Uruguay should win but if Messi/Ronaldo show up...

The goat is taking over France. Watch out for it. I also think Uruguay will beat Portugal out.

I’d love it if at least one team today decides to have a proper go. I’ve no idea what expect from France, but maybe they could put Argentina to the sword. Maybe Argentina will finally pick the right players, tactics and it will all come together, but that seems unlikely.

Would really like to see Ronaldo keep it up against Uruguay with a performance for the ages.

As it is though, I expect a cautious France waiting to pounce on an another disorganised Argentina, and a defensive foul festival between Portugal - Uruguay, probably with a sending off changing the course of the match. Hope I’m wrong though. Unless it’s Suarez sent off for biting, again.

And we're back...

Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann on one side, Lionel Messi and Marcos Rojo on the other with Diego in the stands. Needless to say, potential classic.
Despite Argentina being an absolute mess I presume France still isn't too happy taking on Messi in this stage. Winner waits for Portugal or Uruguay in the round of 8, the loser goes home with this World Cup being an absolute failure considering aspirations at the start.

Another South America vs Europe, Suarez vs Ronaldo, Tabarez vs Santos. This one is almost guaranteed to be a cagey affair with a lot of tension with a high possibility of yellow cards and one red on each side. If Argentina somehow wins the game before it will also mean we are set for Ronaldo vs Messi confrontation in the next game which will send this place and the whole internet into oblivion. Still not sure about wanting to see that, though.

Prediction: France and Uruguay to go through.

Go...

I am going to put a 5er on Rojo having finally found his destiny as goal scoring machine going to outscore Kane, Ronnie and Big Rom shooting Argentina to the title.

On the other hand I do not think Diego can survive another 4 games so for the sake of his health it might be better to Argentina to get thrown out by France today.

I hoped to see Martial play but just realized he is not even in the squad. Somehow I missed that.

I think Argentina will struggle to control the midfield, They're up against Pogba, Kante and Matuidi (?). They all have crazy work rates and surely will work their arses off in this game?

Ronaldo and Messi to win, next friday will be the day "the who is the goat" question will be answered.

Argentina and Portugal, for me. Argentina will be buoyed by their dramatic win last time out - not to mention France have looked dire - and I think Ronaldo’s sheer will to win will inspire his teammates to victory over Uruguay, who haven’t looked great in the easiest group of the whole tournament.

An Argentina v Portugal World Cup Quarter-Final is the face-off the Messi-Ronaldo duel needs. They’ve given us practically everything else. Don’t let us down, footballing gods.

France vs Portugal, back to a Euro classic.

Cant believe so many think these 2 wont progress. Argentina are not good enough. Uruguay will be hard to beat, but Portugal will progress somehow

Argentina and Portugal to go through. I wouldn't put any money on it though!

Ah, I see now. Ffs, I thought it is about which anthem is better just reading at the title.

It was just a personal one as they're probably my favourite four anthems in the competition left so quite cool they're all playing each other. Plus I'll probably enjoy watching Uruguay-Portugal sing them more than watching the actual game.

I'll go back to the normal team names for other days if no one else has started a thread.
