Let's all Laugh at England

Regarding the so-called diatribe, my eyeballs are telling me that it's a case of some posters being put out more so by the incessant hate that the England National team has attracted rather than just 'criticism.' I don't see the majority of posters implying that as Manchester United supporters you have to cheer for England, but rather calling out non-Tunisians/Panamanians/Belgians/Colombians/Swedes/Croats as haters.

In my opinion, the real cringe are the posters who have lurked in the England match-day/let's all laugh at/easy side of the draw threads for two weeks plus with no nationalist or real vested interest in either the England team or the nationality of their opposition and yet have racked up more posts than Karius fumbles.

I get banter, I've had a fair amount messaged/shared/texted my way in the last few hours. Mostly by Aussies or Americans who aren't card-carrying supporters of any English club team. It's fine and I give it back just as much. I just don't understand posters who do it incessantly to fellow supporters of an English football club they obviously care about enough to share a forum with.

I'm English, I'm also a pretty rabid basketball fan, and I support the Brooklyn Nets (yes, it's as miserable as you think.) I'm not American and I don't live in Brooklyn anymore - but just like United, these teams have worldwide support. I can't imagine a scenario where I'd be willing on the U.S Men's basetball team to lose (unless they played England,) and then posting about how great it made me feel. Throw in a couple of my Nets players into the National team and it just seems especially dumb. I just can't see how club support lives in a vacumn, isolated from the foundations and the Country in which it was founded

I never said majority mate. I only said some which was the case here.

England fans don't have to call out anyone who isnt from a country England played. Its not 'hating' its piss taking. Some England fans just need to lighten up and take the piss taking in the good spirit the vast majority of it is intended.

You dont have to be a supporter of the opposition side to take the piss out of a team. Two months ago most on here no doubt including a few of the ones having meltdowns last night were taking the piss out of Liverpool and Karius. We weren't all Real Madrid fans. Thats how football banter works.

There was maybe 3 or 4 being weirdly passive aggressive about it. It was pretty funny because for all the talk of meltdowns they seemed to be the only ones really getting bent out of shape. Not that many of them, but they stood out when everyone else was more or less taking the banter on the chin.

I think everyone knows that for the most part the vast majority of English fans are being ironic. There is an element of arrogance in the English media though as you know and after a while it gets hard to separate it all. Especially for the rest of the UK when all our World Cup coverage comes in with an England slant on it as we get the same BBC and ITV coverage as you do.

I've talked to quite a few people that aren't really interested in football who were wanting England to go out because all they see is the smugness from the media, that song being sung and they think England fans are the small minority thuggish element that spent years ruining it for everyone.

I saw that from both sides though, yeah 99% was good fun banter but was a few none English fans getting a bit exteme. Said this above but I think we a pass on the getting worked up posts, just knocked out of a World Cup semi final. Sure some in morning will regret some posts.

I'd bet most English United fans hate the English media more then anyone outside of England probably do. I remember being an England fan between 98 to 02 it was not fun.

That's just because it's almost always only England who qualify though.

I remember Ian Dowie on commentary cheering YEEES when Northen Ireland took the lead in a game in the last Euros. I didn't complain it was biased, it seemed normal to me.

If the other home nations qualified more you'd get a slant and a bias presentation too.

So English folk don’t take the piss at all? Laugh at other clubs/nations when they lose football games? Sounds very serious altogether. No wonder the English are taking this result badly!

It's quite obvious to see who is just having a laugh and joke, thats cool to me, and then who seem to genuinely have a deep rooted dislike for England and the English, and its clear there's plenty on here.

England trying to score a goal when Croatia were celebrating. The same move Panama tried and had the English player criticising them.

Going on our performance last night, we'd have missed anyway.

Well played Croatia - deserved winners. Great tournament for England though - genuinely likeable group of players and management team, getting further than anyone could have expected. Looking forward to the Euros already (qualification depending).

So how many of you proud Englishmen were supporting the english team Liverpool against spanish Real Madrid in UCL final.
There is a huge chunk of fans of different nationality who doesn't hate english team but are making fun of english team just like we did with other teams.
I don't get why you lot are getting butthurt and believe me all the other fans took the 'lets laugh at.. ' thread better than english ones.

Absolutely, the salt off of many on here has made me realise the same. The fact that the England thread was about 10th down yesterday and now there are 4/5 at the top says it all, people were avoiding talking about it. Had no idea that the hatred for England from many was akin to most United fans hate of Liverpool. I think it's strange, but there you go.
It goes all the way back to the 13th century and King Edward being a tool. That’s why Scotland see England as the international equivelant of Liverpool. However I would say quite a bit of it up here is just token banter now, sure there are some that legitimately hate the English team with a burning passion but they probably watched Braveheart too many times when they were young. Modern fans just know you don’t publicly support England, it’s just a done thing.
I think Brazil, France and Germany are the go to teams when our nation doesn’t get there. Brazil, because it’s fecking Brazil. France due to that time we told them about King Edwards dodgy plan to invade them and be even more of a Cnut and Germany just because they are good at penalty shoots outs against you lot.

I would agree with that. As someone who doesn't support England i will admit that i did take some pleasure from them going out last night!

But that has nothing to do with the team who i quite like. But the media, especially the gutter press, are fecking unbearable. They ruin the whole thing. England had a decent tournament though IMO; they have a good team there.

Couldn't agree more. Supporting England is always a bit of a tough one at times - there are incredibly unlikeable aspects of the fanbase which can rear its head, particularly at tournaments held close to home. There's no denying the far-right core element of the England fanbase, and it's this sect of support which is pretty much aired via much of our tabloid press. Totally self-righteous and belittling (to put it kindly).

Again, one of the reasons why I've enjoyed this tournament is that I've felt this faction of support hasn't been unbearably visible, though some might disagree. Personally, having watched pretty much all the games in large public spaces in London, there seems to be a new type of England fan born from this world cup, one which doesn't submit to the St. George leg tattoo, male, bald and drunkenly aggressive stereotype (probably generalising a little too much, but you get my point). Much like the team itself, a team which is rooted in immigration and diversity, this world cup has seen a similar transition happen to England's fanbase. Even compared to the Euros a couple of years ago, the whole persona around England - both internally and externally - seems to have transformed and modernised. This is probably largely thanks to the relative success they've experienced in Russia, but I think a lot of praise must be levied towards Southgate and his management team. Long may it continue.

There could be countries with cultures and histories people are especially interested in.

Mmm, probably Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Italy etc rather than Nicaragua or Estonia.

The ITV coverage last night had six “experts” (using that term loosely for Ian Wright), three of whom weren’t English (Keane, Giggs and, from England’s opponents, Bilic). I think the diversity of viewpoints offered in the UK is much better than most other countries where I’ve watched football on TV.

See I just don’t get this “likeable group of players” narrative that’s popped out of nowhere this tournament.

Jordan Pickford- twat
Delle Alli- twat
Kieran Trippier- twat
Raheem Sterling- twat
Jamie Vardy- twat

That’s 4 regular starters there and there’s a few more questionable personalities in the squad. They’ll be back to hating each other soon enough.

The best thing for England this tournament is their manager, now that’s someone you can call likeable and no one can argue.

Vardy hardly plays, Pickford is a bit mouthy (not a bad quality in a keeper), Trippier no idea, Sterling much maligned by the press but seems ok, Alli - fair enough, at least on the pitch.

Hardly a cast of rogues. And again, rather like the media is arrogant line, isn’t it just the case that you know the England players (warts and all) a lot better than those from most of the other countries?

Alli is definitely a twat and can totally understand the dislike for Sterling and to some degree Vardy, but Pickford and Trippier, why?

Not sure what Trippier or Pickford have done to be considered a twat, especially after the tournaments they've had.

I guess contrasted with those you have Rashford, Lingard, Kane, Maguire, Walker, Young, Alexander-Arnold, and others who all seem level-headed, grounded, decent guys. Also the obvious unity and respect amongst the group is largely where the "likeable" - certainly goes above and beyond the "golden generation".

What's your definition of "twat" word ? Because only Alli can be considered one from your list for me.

Lingard is the type where if he's on your team you cringe for him a little but still like him; if not you'll find him annoying as anything. Lingard is harmless though.

Some of you are so salty and bitter about England and the English. Its bizarre and not healthy for you to carry that negativity around with you.

What have Pickford or Trippier done to warrant the 'twat' tag?

Agree with your view on the rest.

England have the makings of a very good team and the manger should stay on for the foreseeable future. Inexperience caught up with them in the end. I also think that with a 4-2-3-1 system they may be much better.IMO.

back to what matters...club football and real football fans, and the rest of the nation can get back to love island. Win - Win :-)

You need to be good for people to be bitter and salty about you.
